Player callable missions?

(DarkangelUK) #21

Doesn’t really help for consoles, but i’m sure PC will have chat binds.

(BioSnark) #22

Missions aside, being able to put enemy turrets and mines on the team minimap would be nice.

Oh, like spamming “owned”, “owned!” or “so owned” vsay after each kill. No one ever did that in quake wars. They said it over voip. I mean the reverse…

I already covered this…

(BioSnark) #24

You’d need to be a killing machine to get an automatic temporary mute vsaying “owned” after each kill.

(H0RSE) #25

The way this is worded, I have no idea what you’re trying to say…

The thing I am talking about, is when you press a vsay like 3 times in a row, it automatically mutes you, no matter what you press, “killing machine” or not.

(Nikto) #26

he meant: to mute your vsay, by sending owned messages after each kill, you’d have to be a killingmachine

(H0RSE) #27

That’s only if the player is sending single messages, and not multiple “owned” messages after each kill.

Either way you look at it, if he is killing fast enough to initiate a mute, then he will be muted. If the kills are too spread out, then so are the messages, and they’re not that annoying. My main point is, spamming a pre-recorded, in-game message, regardless what it says, is never as annoying as a real person spamming his voice - not even close.

(LyndonL) #28

It’s a matter of opinion.

It’s a lot easier to mute a single player’s VOIP clientside than to ensure you’re playing on a server that has VSAY Spam protection.

My point was that protection or not, I can deal with vsay spamming - it’s actual people I have a problem with.

agreed 100%

Annoying kiddo over voip are freaking bugger… it should be on by default tho, easy enuff to mute them locally

(BioSnark) #31

my point, as always, is that ‘actual people’ were never a problem in etqw.

(light_sh4v0r) #32

In ETQW you can mute people from VoIP and text/vsay, so it doesn’t make a difference.

(H0RSE) #33

And the fact that you would need to mute a person, kinda gets my point across.

(SockDog) #34

Both VoIP and chats are important, hell even text has it’s place and benefits. All should be on by default and all should be mutable by the user both as part of the game setup and in game on the fly.

I really don’t see why a multiplayer team game should be crippled to protect people who find the odd expletive or offensive comment unbearable and who also are too stupid to switch them off in a menu. Sickens me to the back teeth to think we may have no customisable content on the characters for fear someone will see a veiny willy and have a stroke (pun ENTIRELY unintentional).

(Nail) #35

iirc. only global voip is off by default, when you join a fireteam the FT voip is turned on, and be reasonable, having to check a box is hardly crippleing. It’s a shooter not a social network. I played W:ET for years without voip and never suffered for the lack of communication.

(SockDog) #36

Default is the key word there. Sure it’s not removal of the entire feature but it’s placing a heavy weight on it not being used. Me turning it on isn’t going to help if the player I need to coordinate with doesn’t have it on.

There is no discovery there for the feature. It’s off and many people won’t question it’s absence or look for how to switch it on. That’s how it’s crippling, it’s included but hidden. Hidden to protect people from rude words, but hey, don’t worry they can be griefed and steam rolled aplenty because that’ll never turn people off playing the game online.

And no, it’s not a social network but then who is suggesting people are going to arrange dates while playing Brink? Heaven forbid we should move beyond a limited defined chat vocabulary and text and move onto actual spoken language for games.

(Zanchile) #37

I’m pretty sure i read that if you have VOIP on then you are put in a match where everyone has VOIP on.

(H0RSE) #38

I’ve been trying to get this point across for awhile now…

How do you know it’s hidden? Have you seen the final menu layout, or know something we don’t? Besides, anyone serious about using VOIP, will know to look for it, regardless of how “hidden” it is, and those not serious about it, chances are, they’re not going to use it regardless.

Besides, talking VOIP on PC comes with to many other factors. It’s not like console, where everyone who uses vocie chat is using the same voice chat. PC has TS, and vent, as swel as the in-game VOIP, so even if they were to use it, it still may not be te same one the rest of the team is using.

Hidden to protect people from rude words, but hey, don’t worry they can be griefed and steam rolled aplenty because that’ll never turn people off playing the game online.

And if things really get that bad, people can play it offline - bot matches are the ****.

Heaven forbid we should move beyond a limited defined chat vocabulary and text and move onto actual spoken language for games.

They already have this - it’s called VOIP. You can turn it on if you want… and as mentioned earlier, once you turn it on, you will join games where everyone has it on.

VOIP is an optional, and can alter gameplay unlike any other “optional” feature, such as graphics settings, and as such should remain off unless the user chooses to use it.

(SockDog) #39

Anyone got a link to that match making statement? Seems like another option to thin down the servers along with FF, ranks, modes etc.

@Horse

You’ve stated in the past that your choice to use VoIP is a personal decision that has nothing to do with it’s value in game. Your arguments here seem to be desperately striving to validate that position by justifying global chat being off by default. Looking at this logically.

Hidden
It is hidden because as far as we know the user isn’t presented with a choice,

“Would you like global chat on? It allows you to talk to everyone you’re playing with but it might also expose you to some naughty words. You can always switch this on/off later through the menu”

Instead it’s off by default. You either need to know it’s available and hunt to switch it on or discover it by accident. It’s likely a lot of people won’t be bothered and make do with the default settings. That’s not a choice!

Third Party
Third party software doesn’t stop you using the in-game voip.

Offline
If the solution to griefing and steam rolling is to play offline then why isn’t it also applicable to voip abuse?

Off by default
Yes voip is optional when it’s on by default, use it or don’t use it. When its off by default there is no option, many people won’t use it. match making is of no use if the majority aren’t making a decision but playing by the developer defaults.

I really hope SD reconsiders this or makes the choice user selectable when going online. This is IMO nearly as bad as ETQW launching with no VOIP. I understand the motivation to soften the line between online and offline but the way it is being done (or proposed) is going to set a precedent that may impact the game in the long run. IMO it’s better to have the VOIP on and explain how to opt out than it is to switch it off and have people never know the difference.

(Nail) #40

and after voip was added to ETQW, people didn’t know they could mute individual players untill they asked in the old forum, I see no difference

btw, I doubt the matchmaking system could recognize if you had voip on

voip on/off could easily be in the initial setup menus, but as stated we don’t know
