We (my company) just finished creating a game for a client, and their site has gone live. While the game is still in final bugs stage, the client has been generous enough to offer a $500 top prize to whoever is #1 on the scoreboard at the end of this year! To be more generous, until the end of the year, you can play the game for free as many times as you like!
Obviously if you want to be eligable for the prize you do have to register, but it’s a FPS site anyway, not linked to spam or porn or something.

The game is genuine as is the chance to win $500.
Now personally I don’t care about the money (since I’m not eligable to win), but I AM particularly proud of the game I wrote (from scratch, bear in mind) which is easily the best FPS game I’ve seen in a browser anywhere on line.

So basically I’m blowing my own trumpet, nothing more. That it gives you lot a chance to win a bit of extra cash over the holidays is a bonus. If you don’t fancy the money, don’t play - simple as that.

Or is this simply a bluff by Lagger to stop you all playing it and beating him to the prize? :wink:

And in case you are wondering, while I don’t inhabit this particular forum, I’m not just a random spammer (check my post count vs yours Lagger - 520 to 10) - I inhabit the ET and Q3MAP2 forums, so I’ve not just wandered in with ‘auto-spam’ mode set to TRUE. On the contrary - the game is going to be heavily publicised after Xmas, but I thought I’d give you lot here a head start on playing and winning (since it’s also likely the game will become pay-to-play after Xmas, but now it’s free).

I hope that’s a joke :slight_smile:
AI is pretty much non-existant. Bots can follow waypoints or attempt to follow you and / or shoot, that’s about it. The one good thing is there are LOTS of waypoints, so they can go pretty much anywhere except through doors (which is intentional).
They ‘move’ on their own though, which is enough for this game, which is hopefully only the first step in what will ideally end up as a multiplayer browser game.

Bloody configs grrrrr, what more control do you want?!?!

Also, it took around 2 months to do, although I had a very basic version of some of the bits before that (which was what got us the job).

Done in Director 8.5, with max, and the player / guard models were bought in. Most in-game textures were free ones online. Sounds we bought in too, although music was from golgotha. Everything free should be detailed in the credits bit.

It doesn’t work, it just says “this demo is being run from an illegal location, it can only be played at www.clanexchange.com” - which is the site I’m on!

MSIE6 Win2000 session-cookies disabled and I clicked “cancel” on the evil download-random-software thing.

If you don’t download the essential mouse Xtra then how do you suppose it should work???

Go back, install it, and play - the Xtra is harmless but it allows me to reset the mouse position each frame, which means you get proper FPS mouse control.

If you are worried about my program taking over your mouse - be aware that hitting escape ALWAYS stops it dead, IE I can’t totally take over the mouse, it’s just for the game.

I really need to sort out a more graceful handling of that error though so people know why it’s happened I guess.

hey gerbil, just tried your game, unfortunately it doesn’t work for opera but ie did it, pretty cool to do such a thing in the browser, what was your part of the game, the mapping? anyway - cool stuff, will go on playing now! :clap:

oh and btw, is there supposed to be sound and music in this demo or is it my comp here that doesn’t play it?

I did it all really - graphics mapping coding.

Yeah there should be music / sound effects. The music is streamed in as you play so doesn’t necessarily kick in immediately. But there SHOULD be audio, so that’s an interesting bug. Don’t suppose you have had sound with other shockwave things (IE is it just my prog or all shockwave content? - try www.robotduck for some other decent sw games).

As for not working properly with opera, count yourself lucky you have an alternative - we had to officially ‘discard’ anyone running OSX with Quartz because the OS takes over virtually all VRAM and leaves nothing for games that don’t run fullscreen unless you have >32 megs of VRAM :frowning:

i’m impressed, really! didn’t win it yet though, i always make it into the same room which is i guess the target room but i don’t know what to look for and then time is gone, pretty short time limit you have there! can you get more time by killing the soldiers or something like that?

Are you playing the demo or full version? Demo only gives you a minute - full version 5.
You have to be registered to play the full game - while I’ve had a few people scream ‘commercialisation!’, they can piss off.
I mean, how do you expect to have $500 sent to an unregistered anonymous winner? :expressionless:

So you must register. They may have a few outdated bits of text saying you pay with ‘credits’, but that’s actually been removed until after Xmas, so you can play (when registered and logged in) as many times as you want until this current competition ends.

If you are already playing the full version, then to ‘win’ you have to run up to the green button in the room after the end boss to complete the game and get the rather huge time bonus (scoring is weighted so highest score is acheived by getting through entire game ASAP).

You gotta bear in mind the client is not based in an english-speaking country, so some of their site is not as clear as it could be, nor the layout as easy to navigate (since it’s a new site release). Hopefully these things will improve for now, but yeah registering is required to get the full version, even if not particularly clear on the site!

how about some pimpin - i got place 17 yet, only problem is that i don’t find the way from level 3 to 4 but anyway i can run around and kill the soldiers :banana:

oh and btw sounds work now, after reopening IE (of course because it crashed)… all people and developers should go for opera! (i don’t want to start flame wars now, but of course i am right :smiley: )
