PK3s out there that make it impossible to run a local game

suck :banghead: :bash: :banghead:

symptoms

  • crash when loading map
  • multiple map loads, then 'server disconnected for an unknown reason
  • orange dialog box with ui_mpx86 failed pure check

haven’t figured out if this is because of number of pk3 files, some specific file, or something else, like the number of arena or campaign files.

Removing a few random .pk3s seems to have fixed it.

Ya, I haven’t been able to play local games for a while now. Today all of ET’s menus went orange when the load crashed. Everythings fine when I play on ND80 servers, but when I try to go test something, no go =(

Deleting (or moving to another directory) some .pk3s should fix that up.

pak0.pk3 and mp_bin are the only ones you need to run the game. Of course, that means that you have to move them back before you play online, or keep a second ‘clean’ install for testing. For mappers have a clean install is a good idea anyway.

Yeah… I get the feeling that the requirement to use a seperate pk3 to run a custom campaign cycle is a rather unfortunate feature of this game. I’ve got about ten of these things already, and they mess up the loading screen, the campaign descriptions and the campaigns themselves (when run locally). If only it were possible to set up a campaign cycle using a “normal” server-side map cycle script, the mess would have been a lot less, IMHO.

Totally agree with Lekdevil on this one, not mentioning the time it would save just to edit a textfile directly instead of having to zip it, rename it and replace the old one. Especially when testing new custom maps and discovering they did not work in campaign either as a map or at that specific time in rotation and needed to be moved further back or forward in the queue, you have to create a new pk3 all the time.
I’m currently at mapcycle 18… :disgust:

I have to delete all the pk3’s that have .tmp on them if i wanna host a LAN game with custom setups - there is always a rotten egg in there that fuks things up

We’re still hoping for a fix for this issue in RtCW.
