Ping got increase a lot after upgraded to 1.01 server patch

(ixyc) #1

Hi All,

I was running a 1.0 Linux Server with ETPUB 0.65. But it crashed about every two days, then I upgraded it to 1.01 Server patch. It never crashs again. However, a friend of mine who connects from Japan originally have ping about 190, but after the 1.01 patch he gets ping about 270. I also noticed that my ping incrases slightly from 30 to 40 but not as much as him.

Can any body tell me why and how to solve it.Thanks.

p.s. I don’t want to run a 2.60 sever because in my region there are lots of them and many of them are empty all day. I need a 2.55 server for noobs.

try to ping the server IP and see if its the same like ingame one ( ms-dos -> ping Ip )

Thanks for the reply,

When I ping my server, my ping is <1 ms. But in game my ping is about 3x depending on the loading of server. Is that normal?

Yes, in-game ping isn’t very accurate and usually higher than a “real” ICMP ping (especially with the default ping size).

if u got <1ms ping that mean the server should be in your local network or the server is hosted in your ISP

yes but the ping should be near the real icmp ping ( +/- 5/10 ping ) and it depends on server status and your ISP
like the server is 80-90% of load u got higher ping or if the network is not enoght u got higher ping with conection interupt

anyway its not normal to ping the server for long time and to get 1 ping and to have on it 30-40

did u change some setting in your game like cl_maxpackets ?

I host the game by myself in the same xxx.xxx IP adress with my PC. My server is running on a very old machine, PIII 800Mhz, with 100 Mbits network. However, it handles 23 players very well with almost no Yellow in the lagometer.

I didn’t change any setting of server. I just installed the 1.01 server patch. However, I updated a lot Ubuntu 6.06 patches before installed 1.01 server patch. Now, I suspect it is Ubuntu’s pathces that causes the ping incrase. Try to resintall the Ubuntu 6.06 without installing any update now.

when u said 100 mbits network u mean the local one right ??? how much is your real i-net network and bandwidth ??

your problem may come from your server 800 mhz are not enoght for 23 players ( ET require like 30-40 mhz per slot ) and how much memory u have on the server too

if u have like super gold rush in roatatiuon that will be hard for the server :stuck_out_tongue:

lol its normal for your lagometer do not show yellow stuff if u are in local netowrk with your server so no packet lost

cl_maxpackets is client side command - try it with 20 and 100 to see the ping difference
