Phantom, Ninja (Assassin) or Samurai (Combatant)

(gg2ez) #1

Ever since release, the role of Phantom has never been clear due to his odd combination of abilities and equipment. His Katana, high damage output, and tanky damage absorbent armour are reminiscent of a Samurai, however, his ability to be invisible hints towards being ninja inspired.

For the future of Phantom, which way would you like to see him go? Towards a more killing based class (Sumurai) or a more recon based class (Ninja)?

I don’t like tanky characters, so it would make more sense to make Phantom more suited for ninja skills. A bit less visible or increase his speed by 10 would be just fine. Take off his damage mitigation and we have a decent merc right there.

(gg2ez) #3

A reasonable opinion. Thank you @p4v

It does’t make sense for Dirty Bomb to have a tanky samurai with a melee focus. While an Assassin character will be amazing for breaking stalemates or steam rolls. Just a few pick at the right time makes a huge difference.

It’s pretty much what Phantom has been since he was released. Just a musclebound killer. I appreciate your opinion. Thanks @Watsyurdeal

TBH this how i see phantom in the future if he ever gets changed. The armor aspect of his cloak getting removed and having 85% or 90% invisibility instead or being having only a 10% or 15% dmg reduction but still having 85% or 90% invisibility.

What do you guys think?

(TheOrangePhantome) #7

@gg2ez That doesn’t mean that he cant be changed to a more stealthier merc than what he is.

I think it depends

Honestly full invis is the only thing that’s for sure going to make it reliable in all situations.

The trick is, do we allow Phantom to attack while cloaked? Or force him to turn it off to do anything?

I mean shit the animation is there, and you can even theory test it.

Just pretend that you have to uncloak to attack or do anything next time you play Phantom. It actually might work beautifully.

Stealthy all the way. 95% invisibility , no armor, slight speed boost and maybe reduce his health by 10.

I voted Samurai…though I don’t agree with the high damage/easy to play part…why he got nerfed in the first place.

In fact one could claim this poll is skewed for the fact your options are either him being a big

or a cool ninja who takes some skill to play.

Think Phantom would be nice if they’d change stealth (only visual, not damageshield) and sound back to what it was pre-(intotheground)nerfs. Would also be nice if he’d have something to offer to the team, maybe just something like “faster” (not fast like engineers) planting? Then you could play an offensive not tanky recon class with a bit of a role within competitive teams aswell aside from just brainless killing.

A secondary ability to either spot enemies or to more effectively trick/deceive the enemy would be a very good addition to Phantom. My only opportunity currently with Phantom to trick is to get an enemy to chase, go around a corner, cloak, and backpedal. Even with him in rotation, I’ve had success with this tactic, which I’ve dubbed “The Penn and Teller School of Phantom”.

Yeah, sure, the Ninjas of old had plenty of deadly weapons, but their greatest of all was their ability to trick and to get under the skin of their opponents. Even if I don’t get very many kills, getting picks on a certain important Merc and distracting and tricking the rest has opened them up to getting utterly fucked by my team.

Give Phantom access to the Mechanic augment, so he can ninja-cap more effectively and give a greater element of teamplay.

What do u think about an EMP ability @Samniss_Arandeen. It disables all deployables and has the same range as the HBS but it has a 40 sec cooldown. Maybe a empjammer?
Or nade wich lasts for 10 sec?

Or the BF like spotting ability that could work out well as well.

(TheOrangePhantome) #14

I didnt say that he should be totally inbisible @Whatsyurdeal but what u suggested about turning of the cloak your self and then attacking remindes ne a bit of the cloak which the Infiltrator from Planetside 2 has and it’s an interesting idea.

(Samniss_Arandeen) #15

@TheOrangePhantome has a great idea in the form of an EMP ability. I’d add the spotting of Vassili’s HBS in there, but as a “snapshot”; that is, it only spots their locations as of the instant the deployable activated. Let Vassili continue the tracking of enemies over time and patrolling of areas.

It would also be a signal to the friendly team that hey, Phantom just launched his sneak attack, the enemy is weakened and we should push in!

What also about changing his health and sprint to Proxy’s? 90 health, 450 speed for proper squishyness and sneak attack prowess?

(TheOrangePhantome) #16

@Samniss_Arandeen NO, OH GOD OH MAN OH GOD NO PLEASE no more health changes. PLS

(watsyurdeal) #17

Honestly if they take away his armor, I"d say buffing him back up to 120 HP would be fair.

(gg2ez) #18

Of course @TheOrangePhantome

Honestly I really couldn’t care if he went either way, I could play both. I’m just making the decision to vote based on his aesthetics (Samurai).

(SereneFlight) #20

Voted Ninja.
For high damage and survivability, could we get Berserker merc who runs around with a poleaxe or something?
