Perhaps Activision could consider releasing RtCW MP for free

(Mjolnyr) #1

Seems that RtCW is gradually facing its twilight end. However, comparing with ET, I still prefer RtCW more: faster pace, intense map designs. Why not Activision extract the multiplayer parts out of the entire game, repack it then release it to public for free?

(evilsock) #2

That’d be cool - so long as it runs a different protocol version.

(chr0nicles) #3

If you like the game, support them by buying their game so they can continue developing such games.

(Mjolnyr) #4

I really love this game. In fact, I have purchased 2 copies of this game at its initial release, separetelly installed on my computers at home and at dormitory.

But the problem is, there are fewer and fewer players playing this game. Don’t you see the critical point? A MP game needs sufficient players to support its life. That’s why I determine that a free-release of WolfMP could attract more new players to join this game, which I would consider it as the best MP game that I’ve ever played.

(Cerebrate) #5

Because they can still make money on it?

(sniser) #6

doesn’t find the case/serial

downloads MP_test again…

WHEEEE!! I would prolly only have played beach anyway haha… bye for a while :smiley: :smiley:

I really don’t think that Activision could earn significant profit from selling RtCW now. This game hasn’t been in best selling chart for a long period.

A MP game needs sufficient players to support its life. Think of this… If Activision leave this game dead, they still cannot make any profit. So why don’t they do something to last its life cycle? And I do believe if there would be any sequel to RtCW in the future, a free WolfMP release will be the best promotion than any advertisement.

budget software = more money. that’s why there’s a whole sector of the games biz devoted to budget games espicially on PC. You might not consider buying a three year old game a good idea but lots of other people would.

Very true, 'cos of ET i’m looking to buy rtcw on budget :drink:

If you like ET you should definitely consider buying RTCW.
I don’t think they’ll release it for free any time soon. The only reason to release it for free would be to promote a possible RTCW sequel, but they already have ET for that. Besides, it’s not like the game is really dead. There are about 2000 players playing RTCW at the time I’m writing this, and 2-3 years from now you’ll probably still be able to find some servers to play on so I wouldn’t worry about that. :drink:

I didn’t say RtCW is dead at this moment… but obviously, like I said at the first topic that opened this thread: “gradually facing its twilight end”.

Yesterday I visited www.clanbase.com, and I am surprised that there won’t be RtCW competition in upcoming EuroCup IX. After being shocked by this, I go to www.cached.net to see if there’re any new demos available in recent events… very few.

To release WolfMP for free, could bring nothing directly beneficial for Activision’s revenue. It’s all for the RtCW gaming community. I like ET, but I love RtCW much more than how I like ET. That’s why I make this suggestion.

(puubert) #12

I think it’s stupid, because

a) Activision would LOSE money from the people who go and download the multiplayer instead buying the game.
b) ALL games will diminish gradually, there is always something bigger and better coming along. Look at ET. ET has taken thousands of players away from RTCW. Why would Activision release it free, when it’s going to harm the popularity of their other game.

All I can imagine is that you are desperately hoping some Activision employee will read this and think what a tremendous idea it is. Personally, it’s idiotic and something only a very shitty business would do. If you like RTCW so much, go play it. There’s still 2000 people to play with. Not enough?

(Cerebrate) #13

It’s pretty naive to think that RTCW someday will be released for free. I mean, how many games have been released just because they were old and popular? Althought it might sound like an old cliché, I doubt Activision care about anything else than their potential revenue.

I buy a lot of budget titles myself, and think both publishers and customers win on this.

(Mjolnyr) #14

I just checked the selling chart at www.amazon.com. RtCW: GOTY Edition is ranked as 222nd, while Platinum Edition is 226th. I do wonder how many copies could be sold at this moment, and how much profit can it make.

b) ALL games will diminish gradually, there is always something bigger and better coming along. Look at ET. ET has taken thousands of players away from RTCW. Why would Activision release it free, when it’s going to harm the popularity of their other game.

The fact is, I don’t consider ET as a better game than RtCW. Moreover, I still consider that RtCW has potential to be popular, with some promotion.

If not giving it away for free, there’re still some other ways to promote this game, like GameSpy’s Splinter Cell Promotion or something like this.

All I can imagine is that you are desperately hoping some Activision employee will read this and think what a tremendous idea it is. Personally, it’s idiotic and something only a very shitty business would do. If you like RTCW so much, go play it. There’s still 2000 people to play with. Not enough?

2000? Surely not enough. Remember one thing: RtCW is a pure team-based game. Without CTF and TDM, Q3 still can be played as 1 on 1 deathmatch. But I do believe that everyone here knows how silly it is while RtCW is played as 1 on 1. An elite Q3 player can play deathmatch with his few friends, but without sufficient active teams / clans, the circumstance of RtCW would dimish fast, because there won’t be sufficient games for seperated sole players to join.

That is, this game needs more active players to keep it alive. And that’s why I make this suggestion. Like many other RtCW server admins, I still keep my server alive, expect someday people will attend again. But I know that the server-emptyness won’t be changed, unless there’s something changed.

And I shall emphasize one thing once again: I am not here to demand a game that I want to play but not want to pay. I’m here making this suggestion, because I want this precious game could last longer.

(pgh) #15

Well, ClanBase aint doing another RTCW Eurocup even after summit like 260 requests/signups.

True, but, rtcw.no (5 division league) has had its biggest sign up the past few weeks/months. See Here.

(puubert) #16

Well they’ve got two games in the best sellers list at 222 and 226. How is that a bad thing? The popularity of RTCW is falling because a lot of people have gone to ET. I mean it’s all well and good to think that RTCW is the best game and more should be done to make it popular, but at the end of the day Acitivision is not interested in repopularising an old game. Activision are interested in their NEXT game. The only way to make the game popular again is to get a ground swell of people behind it again. They could release the game code ala ET, or they could spend thousands of dollars advertising an out-of-date game.

You could say ET sounded the death knell for RTCW MP, by IMO bettering it and expanding and releasing it for free. An older, less expansive commercial game cannot compete with that.

Stop wasting time here and go play RTCW before it becomes extinct.

(pgh) #17

Some of us shun RTCW now tho… :wink:

(evilsock) #18

Actually this thread is dead - a previously stated, there is already a free version of RtCW. Maybe someone should check to see if the source code was released and if it can be patched for balance (the heavy weapons were a bit much in the demo - especially flamer ) - see if PBcan be added and you’ve got your freebie - please god, make it run a different protocol to 1.4x - I don’t want to play against hordes of n00bs again - *me remembers why I gave ET a wide birth for the first few months…

BTW - pgh - if you keep losing your posts try Mozilla Firebird 0.7 - renders this site very well and you can click back a couple of pages when SD’s session handling asks for a login every 5 minutes (or whatever it is) without totally losing your post - keeps happening to me but Firebird saves the day - mwhahahahaha :slight_smile:

i’ve never played RTCW before, but i can say that i really love et.

from what i have heard, ET beats the crap out of RTCW, but i would most definitely be interested in getting rtcw just to see what it’s deal is someday.

as far as releasing it for free goes… that wont happen, trust me. releasing ET for free was a very bold and ballsy move by them, releasing another game for free would completely destroy their motivation for releasing ET for free. (they used it as a marketing technique afaik).

also, 2 things to look at: most MP games are bought now because of their MP ability… they dont care about single player, so modding it would be dumb. also, that’s a lot of modifications to make it stand alone without the single player version; it may not seem like a lot of work, but there’s a lot of things they would need to consider. to do all that for free… it all seems rather pointless to me.

The main difference between RtCW and ‘E-teah’ can be summed in the style of a gameshow;

Guess the game: “The Sound of an MP40 in full flight”

  • applause * “Welcome, Game 1, let’s hear the sound of your MP40 in full flow”;

chudda-chudda-chudda-chudda-chudda -MEDIC! MEDIC! (ze enemy is weakened)

*applause

<5 second pause>

applause “Welcome, Game2, lets hear the sound of your MP40 in full flow”;

pft-pft-pft-pft (repair the ve-hickle)

*wild applause

:open_mouth:

*edit - please don’t strip my colours - this is art.
