People cheat...

I don’t know about there being more new cheats for ET in the last month than for RTCW in 2 years, but there sure as hell have been more threads about cheats in the last month than for RTCW in 2 years. ET is going to crumble under the weight of cheating if the community at large comes to believe there are cheaters everywhere. Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the accepted truth.

Presuming it is a lie is just a poor logic as presuming it is the truth.

I do know, becuase I used google to find a couple of cheater sites. That statement wasn’t speculation. It sure as hell wasn’t a lie. Based on what I’ve seen there, it takes more than a week for a new public cheat to be detected, and an undetected version is usually released within a couple of days or less. (yes, evenbalance is aware of the sites in question. I have no idea why it takes them that long to catch a new variation)
Looking back at those forums prior to ET, there was nothing like this for RTCW. A couple of crappy wallhacks, some recoil scripts, and that’s about it.

I am NOT saying that cheaters are everywhere or dominating the game, but if the current trends continue, ET is going the way of counterstrike. No, I don’t cry ‘cheat’ every time I get owned. I know there are people who are better shots than me. I know people sometimes get lucky with blind grenade shots etc.

Sorry reyalP, I wasn’t having a dig. The “lie” I was referring to was the “everywhere” part of the sentence before. We all know cheats exist, I just doubt very much that they’re “everywhere”. Or do you seriously believe they are now?

I just can’t help feeling that the more often people say cheats are “everywhere”, the more likely it is to become a self-fulfilling prophesy.

I have no idea how prevelent they are. The fact is, from an player perspective, it is nearly impossible to tell in game. Taking regular pb screenshots on a few servers would be the only way I can think of to get a representative sample. What I do know is cheats are available, undetected, and constantly ‘improving’.

This is a significant change from RTCW, and if it continues, I would expect their use to become more widespread as time goes on.

BTW, this is not unfixable, IMO. I can think of a few things that would stop the trend:

• If evenbalance upped their response time so that cheats were detected within a day or two of release, I suspect that a large number of the cheaters and developers would give up, or just go to non-pb servers.

• If evenbalance made pb able to detect the general methods that current cheats used, minor changes would no longer make them undetected.

• If banning was functional, the cheaters would soon all be banned from most servers.

• If we tracked down the cheaters and broke their fingers, they would stop playing. :moo:

I do agree with you, that if it becomes accepted wisdom that cheats are everywhere (true or not), then more people cheat, to ‘keep up with the jones’ as it were. OTOH, ignoring the problem will not make it go away.

FWIW, I do not believe that cheating is currently widespread, but I feel that many people used to RTCW don’t appreciate how special that situation was.

as rtcw required a cd key to play OL, did it ban your cd key as
well as you ip guid etc??? ( if caught cheatin )

GUID was based on the cdkey, resulting in an “almost
cheat free experience”.

btw admin taking the time can ban most players, it just depends on the amount of time theyre willing to do it, how many people theyre prepared to ban at the same time, wether the player is banned often enough in order to develop a IP pattern, and how big the range is that the ISP gives him.

You can ban ranges of IP’s by replacing a quartile with 0. x.x.x.0 bans 255 IP addresses, x.x.0.0 bans 255x255 = 65025 IP addresses… If its changing either of the left two quartiles though then its pretty unrealistic to ban the quartile since youre likely banning entire ISP(s).

I do play on SD servers a little bit still. The main reason on dont play as often is I need a big break from the origninal maps. So i found myself a good custom map server.
