If it is technical possible, I would love to see this implemented in a patch, further down the road.
PC vs XBOX vs PS3
I think you guys should probably just keep it to X360 vs PS3. No offense.
Even then I heard that because of the architecture differences between the two, it would be a real headache to program.

I am by no means an expert, but wouldn’t the IDTECH Virtual Machine alleviate such differences?
Like I said, this is only what I’ve heard. From what I understand the PS3 and X360 systems are structured quite differently and as such getting network code that is cross-compatible is not quite as straight-forward as you’d think.
It makes sense considering, as iezza said, not many games have done this before.

Didn’t they already do this? I read an article where everyone was super siked about setting these types of games up. Then they had like pro-console players play mediocre PC players at the game (I think it was Shadowrun at the time) and the PC players absolutely destroyed the console players thanks to the superior response of m/k vs. controller.
There’s other times this has been done before and it never really works out. I doubt we’ll see it.
Edit: Here’s the Escapist Article
I thought that I had read/heard that Portal 2 was cross-platform… anyone know for sure?
'tis. Valve was pushing the PS3 support pretty hard at the time (they actually have Steamworks for the PS3 version of Portal 2). Never actually played with anyone who I knew was on PS3 though.

Nexo
So PC vs PS3 play is possible, it’s the “vs 360” that’s the sticky wicket?
I haven’t played Portal 2 so sorry if this is a dumb question, but the multiplayer portion is all Co-Op in that game right? So the VERSUS part doesn’t matter at all, hence the reason it might work there, but not in an FPS.
Portal 2 can be played cross platform if you own a PS3 or PC. People on the 360 can only play with other people on the 360.
It would be cool if there was a way to battle it out or play across platforms in theory. Nigh impossible in practice.

LOL. I’m sorry but, this is freaking ridiculous. In fact, this whole thread has gotten pretty ridiculous. So, for a rare occasion, I’m gonna cut loose and NOT pull my punches on this one…
Firstly, though, what the hell is that crappy link from? The FOX NEWS of the gaming industry? WTF? LOL. They talked pure nonsense.
I PLAYED SHADOWRUN! I WAS THERE ON LAUNCH DAY, AND FOR MOST OF IT’S ACTIVE LIFE! Active within the COMMUNITY for the PC and Xbox360.
To put it simply… PC players got raped. No exaggeration (beyond metaphorically). They just out and out where getting stomped by the console players on average. It wasn’t even close.
Sure, there were console players that tended to cry “hax” or “PC players” whenever they hit a bit of lag/latency or got owned by someone, but more often than not (in the beginning) the enemies they were complaining about were other CONSOLE players that they assumed were on PC. I myself received plenty of nasty little messages from scrubs pissed that I was on PC, during that first 2 weeks after launch, even though I was on Xbox360 for those games.
I played the game on PC and Xbox360. The PC playerbase was basically disintegrated within the first few weeks after release. Rage quitting Shadowrun in waves. QQ over everything from p2p accusations (listen servers), to console-auto-aim accusations, to the stupid dedicated server system (where I think they had to pay $soft a fee to host your OWN server not provided by $soft, or something like that), to many other complaints. It was freaking nasty. No exaggeration.
There are many reasons why Microsoft killed off cross-platform FPS gaming plans, but console players getting owned by PC players was NOT anywhere close to being a primary reason. LOL.
LOL. You like to post links? OKAY!!! :)
:D:cool:
Here ya go http://n4g.com/news/43443/controller-balancing-console-vs-pc-gaming-and-how-shadowrun-did-it
and again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9iSzLaI9fw
Now, why don’t you try linking to a source that isn’t referenced from an already admittedly (by said person) uninformed comment from a troll of an executive from HP from July 2010 (Shadowrun was released three years BEFORE then in 2007), that claims first-hand knowledge of PC gamers owning Console gamers in Shadowrun. It never happened. Never even came close to happening, LOL.
Shadowrun Random Facts:
-Was a class-based team-based skill-based shooter that REQUIRED teamwork
-Was NOT a twitch-based FPS
-Shared a thing or two in common with CS that helped to widen the gap between teamwork and lonewolfing
-Rage-quitting PC players blackballed the title as they left it, leading to the game only managing to sell a measly 2 or so thousand copies during the period between a few weeks after release until the end of that year (a 6-month time span) on PC
-Was a ghost town, as far as PC players, only a month after release. Went from seeing (and being a part of) full groups of PC players every few matches, to only seeing one or two individual players a day.
-Halo 3 effectively killed off the playerbase
-$soft’s server hosting fee system was severely criticized by the PC playerbase. Thing is, it was supposed to be the start of a new business strategy by $soft (Microsoft), and they had invested significantly into it (as well as FASA the developer who went bankrupt as a result).
*Don’t try to rewrite FPS history. It just reveals to us “real” hardcore FPS vets that you are full of BS (which is why so many scrubby little game review sites get no respect from us).
*NOT intended as a personal insult to nephandys
Uh oh. Did the temperature rise in here? gonna get hot soon…tip toeing out now. Ah, shadowrun. played the demo back when. people still talk about it. that’s saying something.
According to the article…
Microsoft pitted the best console players using control pads against “mediocre” PC gamers with mice and keyboards and found that the console players were “destroyed every time.” It was apparently so bad, he wrote, that cross-platform play would have been an embarrassment to the Xbox team.
Idk who to believe…a guy who pussied out from 1v1in me or a good gaming magazine?
I really don’t want to sound like a whiny PC elitist when I say this, but… There must have been more to the game that you either don’t know about or aren’t explaining.
I’m sorry but I’ve played FPSes on console (it’s where I started) and on PC and there’s a reason why I buy all my FPSes on PC unless they’re exclusive (Killzone 2). It’s because the games are much more intense and much more responsive on PC.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of the controller. It’s extremely good for games with continuous movement such as driving, action/adventure and platformer games. FPSes are more reliant on being able to quickly move a point onto a target though and in that regard analogue sticks can’t compete with the precise acceleration control a mouse provides.
Someone might argue that games like Brink, where movement is a big factor, would therefore even the playing field. Thing is that’s not how it works. What main directions do you move in Brink? Forward and strafing. Anything else and you can simply fine-tune your direction using the mouse while holding the forward key. (I pull away from ledges I accidentally climb on in Brink by jerking the mouse away from the ledge and quickly returning it, something I could not do with an analogue stick.)
Don’t take this as a personal offense, it just doesn’t make sense to me. Neither of the articles you link explain why they found X360 players stomping PC players, plus I’ve been seeing articles that say the complete opposite ever since the X360 was released.

I’d rather keep it Xbox 360 VS PS3 because a mouse and keyboard is much to accurate compared to a controller, therefore destroying balance. However, Sony and Microsoft have never allowed cross-platform games with the exception of Final Fantasy Online, so I highly doubt it’s going to happen. Finally, since the game is already out I don’t believe they can program cross-platform at this point.
Microsoft pretty much screwed that game over. It was a wonder that it sold any copies at all, really. I’m guessing a lot of studios learned a lesson from FASA’s failure in partnering up with $soft in such a way.
Not just what they did with the server hosting, but also how they scheduled the Halo 3 beta and the launch of Shadowrun on top of each other. Nearly the entire FPS playerbase for the 360 had their attention on the Halo 3 beta leading up to the Shadowrun release and were in no way interested in trying Shadowrun. Seemed like 4/4 xbox360 players that I met on Shadowrun during the first weeks only grabbed the game because of word-of-mouth (friendlist) and had never heard of Shadowrun the week before.
I’m guessing that a lot of the fault for Shadowrun’s poor sales was pawned off onto the cross-platform concept by some shady $soft executives trying to save their jobs and/or get rid of competing associates.
Think, if you were a supporter of charging the PC players a premium fee to host their own servers (that you didn’t provide), what would you do when the PC sales barely broke 10k during that year?
What if you were part of the management group that said it would be OK to slash the developing single player campaign from the game to cut costs, and release the game with so few maps?
The cross-platform gameplay was already going against core principles at $soft’s gaming division, and was likely a sensitive and unfairly scrutinized subject throughout development among the higher-ups… couple that with the fact that opposers had egg on their face when the developers revealed that the OPPOSITE of their objections was a reality, and you have a situation were some individuals might have been relishing the chance to sink the cross-platform concept at earliest convenience. Also… crap… I’m rambling, AGAIN!
[QUOTE=coolstory;366459]According to the article…

That is not according to the article, and I don’t ask you to believe. Your belief isn’t needed for something to be true.
Also, you have my GT for xbox and have had it all this time. Still no word from you. You also have my PSN, and still no word. You can either show some balls and COME PLAY ME, or you can stfu and continue to ride your scrubby little platform elitism knowing that I don’t have a worthy FPS PC yet (will have it by end of this month, my current system slows to 4 frames-per-second in firefights on Brink.).
Pussy out? Cool story troll.
