PC Players:What Were You Expecting from Brink?

(.FROST.) #41

Visually I expected every map as detailed as CC. They hadn’t shown so much Resort footage at the promos, did they? The first time I saw some Aquarium footage from the first leaked gameplay I was quite shocked.

Then I’ve expected ingame communication and interaction with the bots like in every SP so far. But they obviously scratched that one and replaced it with dynamic intro and outro vids. Not nearly as immersive as ingame interaction.

On PC, I was expecting (in no particular order):

[ul][li]High quality graphics
[/li][li]Dedicated servers with a significant amount of customisation options
[/li][li]A User Interface built for PC
[/li][li]In game controls built for PC
[/li][li]Better weapons (including spread)
[/li][li]Competitive element (out the box) including first person spectating
[/li][li]Better single player element
[/li][li]Decent AI (honestly, it’s terrible)[/ul]
[/li]
People often mention ET:QW and in truth they’re right, it’s an infinitely better game on PC.

I don’t ‘hate’ Brink, but I don’t love it either. There’s just nothing that compels me to load it up on Steam. The DLC might have me looking at it again but if there’s no significant changes to how it plays on PC, I probably won’t stay too long.

Interestingly, I decided to give the game a go on my PS3. It feels more at home there than it does on PC. Sure, there are issues such as terrible graphics (on a console level, not in comparison to PC) difficulty to find a game that’s not 50%+ bots and lag-tasticness but taking those aside; it actually feels better to play there. That just cements it for me that Brink is a console game through and through.

That’s okay when I’m on my PS3 but I want something built for PC when I’m playing on PC.

  • A game that would be suited for competitive play at release with needed fixes in a timely manner.
  • That SD would have learned from their experience with et:qw were the competitve scene was pretty much dead 3 months after release for several reasons. Eventually they’e got their act togeter, brough the sdk, comp mod and patch 1.5 developed on their own but as it turned out its been too late. Sad to see same happen to brink.
  • A game that would bring casual and competive gamers together, not a game that would force somewhat tiresome mechanics on competive gamers to please the masses. Didn’t work anyway, did it?
  • A game that would bring a decent single player experience. As it turned out single player is just a mean to grind and gets old very fast.
  • Snappy controls and movement, costumizations. I certainly didn’t expect a broken autopilot, smart beeing somewhat a replacement for stairs/ladders and a console port were you can’t even adjust the color of your crosshair.

Well, i think you get the picture. But lesson learned. SD has some awesome pr skills but fail to deliver. And next time i see someone from SD talking the competive background they have just to make us think we will get a competitve shooter i’m certainly not gonna buy it anymore.

Even though i have to admit brink had some great potential. But thats about it.

It topped my expectations, its really a fun team oriented game. It has some issues that need correcting but I love the game.

You can complain about many aspects of Brink but you can’t say “teamplay is limited to pressing a buff button”. Brink is just as, if not more, team oriented than all other shooters out there.[/QUOTE]

Its limited to social teamwork.
The difference b/w etqw and brink is, etqw teamwork relies on competence/skill. Its individual efforts that work together collectively to achieve a common goal.

ETQW also had social play - medics handed out packs, fieldops hand out ammo, oppressors protect team-mates with tac shields, engies repair friendly vehicles and deployables when disabled. But it was balanced.

Brink on the other hand throws the need for competence out the window. It relies on players sticking together, and makes the social aspects of teamwork such as buffing as the primary way that teams win matches.

I really thought we’d get what we got, but with better weapon handling, and better map paths for lights to prevent camping, and a much more tanklike heavy, to make it so everyone would’t go light.
