What Were You Expecting from Brink?

.

(voodooboy) #2

Honestly as a PC player I was expecting a PC game. What I felt I got was a console game.
Edit: I actually enjoy playing this game, just disillusioned somewhat.
Problems:
F
Spread
Some Maps
Cvars
Server files ( Linux )
And more

(its al bout security) #3

i got what i expected, bar some minor issues

(Thundermuffin) #4

This is for PC players.

I was expecting an ET game that came almost ready for competition (basic features like pause, spectator, demos, etc) and only needed some minor balance changes.

(coolstory) #5

I was expecting a smooth competitive and balanced game where I could do crazy jumps of walls and get kills while doing parkour.

Thought brink would be the NEXT BIG game but o well…

(Apoc) #6

Was fairly open minded about it, pretty much happy with anything they threw in it as long as it had decent feeling weapons, was balanced and had comp potential, sadly they didnt deliver on any of these very well.

(Kurushi) #7

About sums it up

(EnderWiggin.DA.) #8

I got more or less what I expected with the following exceptions:

1)There we more noticeable bugs on release than I was expecting.

2)Map balance is/was more defense biased than I was expecting. With only 8 maps being released, I thought they would be better balanced. Reactor, ccity, resort, and shipyard have some issues imo. That’s 50% of the maps. Not talking balance for comp, talking balanced for pubs.

3)I thought parkour/SMART/buff system would be more polished and not be as frustrating near multiple targets.

That said, for me, this is the best game since BF:BC2.

(BioSnark) #9

Having followed the development for some time, I expected a comparatively sluggish team fps with a lot of console-centric player interaction systems with other players, world and objectives and new roadblocks between player communication. Brink was a lot faster and more fun than I expected and also a lot more buggy on release.

EDIT: The amount of pointless crying from the PC crowd was also unexpected. Many PC people seem to have had expectations that I don’t feel were justified by the amount of console-centric features being touted prerelease and complete lack of PC gameplay.

(sereNADE) #10

Dare I say it?

Feanor was right?

i can read. i just decided to fight the power.

I expected it to engage me and it didn’t. I’m happy to take some or most of the blame for that, not all games are for all people. Although, given the player numbers I feel there is also factors in the game that made others feel likewise.

In all, from my perspective it’s a shame given the primary objective seemed to be to make the game have a wider appeal.

(INF3RN0) #13

Why did I pre-order 2 copies?? Expected an ET game with a lot of show gimmicks (ironsights, buffs, etc) that were just there to bait the mainstream gamer, SMART movement to lead to equal or faster game play than ET strafing, map design that allowed for fluid SMART movement (ie not over defined), typical ET class layout with similar roles, etc etc etc… eh the list is long, basically all the mechanics that originally worked so well from the ET games; before one of those 10 guys says “hey this aint ET3 or ETQW2”, a game doesn’t have to be a sequel to implement a similar style of game play and mechanics. Overall the re-definition of teamwork and skill really just makes Brink suck. High skill aim was replaced by awfully designed gun play on top of the revised “class based” teamwork which is now buff wars. The movement speed isn’t really that fast and SMART is completely limited by map design. On the topic of maps, all you ever get to experience is the small cramped portion as the maps pretty much force objective humping (unless your camping the offense the mid-map is unused). As most returning fans have said Brink feels like a completely simplified ET game that liquidated all requirements of skill in just about every area so that the incompetent and unfocused gamer would feel rewarded and continue playing. Why this game was advertised as an ET game is beyond me. Teamwork is not as simple as running to a friendly and pressing F, and having advanced game mechanics and high skill caps that require players to make personal improvements is NOT a bad thing. The fact is that Brink might be fun for a few hundred inexperienced console gamers, otherwise it’s really lackluster and boring. At first everyone said it had “potential” to be as good as ET games, but that was only IF it was completely redesigned to play like an ET game. We got cool hats, lots of guns, fat guys, skill compensation to try and force teamwork, XP grind mode, etc etc, but what we wanted was a complex game based off of ET innovations… not a short-lived simple flashy fun circle jerk named Brink. I decided to stop asking for this game to be more like an ET game when I realized that aside from the general similarities in “objective game play”, this game is too far beyond repair.

I expected the shooting to be better than it is. Also, first person spectator and demo/replay modes. While I like the objective mode it would have been nice to have multiple modes for variety sake considering the small number of maps. I enjoy most other aspects of the game.

First of all I was expecting a PC game. I didn’t get one, I got a console game. There’s no getting away from that.

Second I was expecting a huge dgree of polish, we’ve been seeing trailers for the game for the last 2 years, it was demo’ed at Quakecon 2009, we’ve been able to see the gameplay for a long time, I thought they’d been spending the last 2 years dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s, I was shocked that the game didn’t even look finished let alone polished and that it appeared to have not even had rudimentary QA testing (how did they NOT notice 2 out of the 8 maps had major sound issues?).

Third, although I wasn’t expecting ET2 (I was positively hoping it WASN’T going to be ET2, I want to play a new game) I recall the epic thread on crossfire.nu where “radho” went to great lengths to assure the competitive ET scene that Brink would meet their expectations for a new competitive game, that it would have all the bells and whistles a competitive game needs to have, I was absolutely gob-smacked that far from having “all” it actually had “none”, no 1st person spec, no demo recording, no pause, hugely defensive biased maps etc., this game was never intended to be played competitively, at all, so why did radho write 1000’s of lines of text on a community website that caters almost exclusively to competitive players?

I tried hard not to get excited about Brink, I told myself I wasn’t going to pre-order (and failed at that), but it’s difficult to express how disappointed I am in Brink, and how disappointed I am with SD, I’m shocked at how hard and at how fast this game has failed.

I expected a PC game ! with all the option we can have with it !

  • Cvar unlock
  • Linux Server files
  • Custom Interface (crosshair / hud)
  • PC Gameplay (buff / use button fail)
  • Real manual SMART
  • Working Obj (foam hack box !)
  • bigger maps and amount of map (for 50 box 8 maps that’s really miserly… ) and with better spawn design
  • game browser as the ETQW style (see who’s on server / friends / etc …)
  • Some REAL balance (they speak a lot about but a least it’s crappy !)
  • Weapon spread like ETQW
  • fast pace shooter (sometimes I feel really slow even with the light)
  • And some players to play with !

All the old ET and ETQW players are so desapointed by this release !
that’s a console game port to PC !!! Definitly hate that ! gameplay is only thinking for console players ! all the good things who worked before are just forgotten !! WTF ?
SD says “ETQW players gonna like BRINK” so … it’s a FAIL again ! 80% of the old ETQW players are still playing it ! cause BRINK is far from the quality of this game ! yeah that’s a class game and there is a lot of good new ideas but why forget the ones who works since a long time ? like for the obj ! most part of the hack obj still not yet very balanced …

So still waiting for mister BIG PATCH OF THE DEAD !
To know if BRINK is back from the dead …

(zenstar) #19

I expected something that played a bit like ET:QW and/or W:ET but set in a new IP.
I pretty much got exactly what I expected. I followed the game prior to release and didn’t get caught up in advertising hype.

Didn’t expect all the bugs/issues on release or the constant whining / sense of entitlement that bandied about the forums a lot.

Not dissapointed in anything except the community reactions really. But then you can’t please everyone.

(Patriotqube) #20

True constant whining aint the way.

describing the problems as we see them, and constructive critizism is not a bad thing todo.

But OMG WTF BAD GAME just dosent work, and it dosent even tell the devs what to look for.

Im pleased with the patches made already and aslong as SD keep letting them come im full of hope that in the end this will be great.

The game is still to consolish for me, but that wont keep me from playing it.

But if all people leaves so will i ofc, i dont enjoy playing against bots, we have been forced to have some on our servers, which is really annoying, but thats life i guess.
