PC hardware experts: please speak up!

so my budget for a PC + screen is max 1900 euro (I will not be able to make more with student job) and this is what I have come up with:

case: Corsair Obsidian Series 550D Mid-Tower Silent Case Black €135,00
motherboard: Asus Z97-PRO Wifi AC (Socket 1150-Intel Z97- ATXDDR3-VGA) €195,00
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K (3.5GHz) 6MB - 4 Cores - 4 Threads €229,00
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 Cpu Cooler €99,95
GPU: MSI GeForce Nvidia GTX 970 GAMING 4GB GDDR5 4G €389,00
RAM: Corsair 16GB (2x 8GB) 1866MHz DDR3 Vengeance Low Profile €174,00
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO SSD 250GB SATA III Basic Kit €124,95
HDD; Western Digital 1TB SATA III 7200RPM 64MB Caviar Blue €54,00
Power: Corsair RM850 Watt Platinum Fully Modular Power Supply €139,95
screen: Asus 24" VG248QE LED 1920x1080 1ms 144hz HDMI/DP/DVI €348,95

price(all costs included): 1.889,80 EURO = 1.481,25 POUNDS = 2.312,08 DOLLAR

What do you guys think of these components? Will this play dirty bomb at a minimum of 144 FPS on high settings? Should I buy a bigger case for future upgrades or is it big enough? quality of components? Alternatives? bottlenecks? good screen? … I put this together after some reading and stuff, but I am far from an expert. My goal is to get a high performance and stable gaming PC.

THX for anyone giving their oppinions/ideas it is much appreciated!

PS: I know my power supply is probably overkill, but I would buy it with eyes on the future (2nd GPU,…)

(PixelTwitch) #2

where are you from mate… thats quite expensive for what you have listed…

(ToonBE) #3

From Belgium, shop = https://www.codima.be/nl (I would use it because it is close to my home for costumer service)

What do you think is a more normal price? and where could I buy it?

(PixelTwitch) #4

Ok fair enough…

Dirty Bomb is not yet optimised so I could not say how much performance you would get once thats done but right now on a 4.6Ghz 6 Core i7 with Sli 680GTX I am unable to hold 144fps on DB on low lettings. Currently the biggest factor to performance seems to be CPU clock speed. If you could overclock that CPU to 4.5Ghz or even 4.9Ghz I am confident you will be able to play with decent visuals at a decent fps but I will not promise 1080 144fps. However when the games optimised… who knows

(INF3RN0) #5

FYI a lot of GTX970s are quite unstable atm. There’s a major driver issue being investigated, which may take another few months to solve.

(spookify) #6

This game has such huge swings in FPS its hard to tell what is good and what isnt…

I can hold 357 frames some times and for no reason drop to 100… Also player count in servers effects the FPS like crazy…

I can not wait until the game (AND SERVER) is optimized!!! (Hopefully for SLI too!!)

  • Look for another SSD, there are already some for about 80-90 euros !!!
  • Actually 770/780 GTX is enough (or another cheaper graphics card, different model), instead better buy a i7!! CPU is most important part!!!
With my cpu I can Stream even BF4 on the same computer without noticing anything! (http://www.twitch.tv/bangtasticmark/b/600618884) in case you are interested in streaming at some point.

Make sure that your graphics card and CPU cooler fits in the tower! (better slightly bigger for future)

  • For the Power Supply: Better get a Bequiet recommend it a lot! Dont know How good corsair is (In general I think 700/750 W is sufficient enough) (I got 650W with 670 GTX and i7 4770k)
  • Are you sure you rly want a 144hz monitor? if yes then there is only Asus or Benq (for benq you got better customization options I believe, black equalizer and stuff)

For RAM: better stick with 8gb (its half the price and enough!) There will be ddr4 at some point. Later you can still buy another 8 gb if you still want 16 gb (if you only need it for gaming, then 8gb is enough!)

Check your CPU what RAM HZ it does support, most of the time cpu only supports 1600 mhz. (You need only a higher ram if you go for overclocking, which I wouldnt recommend, since lifetime is decreased!)

PS: DONT GO FOR SLI, one gpu will be always faster!!! it will be never 100 per cent supported by games! Microstuttering is still common for double gpu setups. (unless you want to mine bitcoins or do some hashing)

(ToonBE) #8

I will not buy it right now, but the latest in 6months. D’you think it’ll get resolved by then?

  • Ok, I will look into that. Will a cheaper SSD have significantly less performance or is it the same more or less?
  • I read on the internet to better spend morebon GPU and less on CPU. Now I am confused:p Can anyone explain?
  • I read good things about corsair! I am going for 850 to make it “future safe”
  • Ok, thx! I’ll reduce to 4x4GB it’ll save me good amount of euro’s! Thx for the tip on RAM Hz did not know about that at all
  • Ok, no SLI in future then… Can you explain why it is not optimized? I thought it was double power (same like sticking 2 stripes of RAM in the motherboard) and resulting in higher frame rates.
  • as for the screen: No I don’t need 144Hz I just want a good gaming screen! Also not sure whether to take 21" or 24"

The better the cpu the longer you wont upgrade it. Gpu gets faster outdated than a decent cpu imo. When there are poorly optimized games or games that demand high end cpu you will have also more frames.
When you buy a i5, you end up buying a new cpu + mainboard sooner (with every new generation you will need always a new mainboard). So it is more futureproof.

You may have 2 GPU slots, but most of the time the second slot doesnt support full speed!! Only high end mainboards have 2 full speed gpu slots I think, look it up.

2 gpu isnt double the power practically! For optimization ask the devs or nvidia^^ it depends on the game how good it supports sli, sli support takes a bit longer for updates sometimes. But a single GPU like a 980 will be hell of more stable, hands down!

then a benq 120 hz is the best you can get (i think there is still a 120/144hz which is 50 euros cheaper, its a old model but pretty good, every gamer I know got one) they all are 23.6 or 24 inches. Its kinda standard.

Thx! This is very helpfull!

I will change my GPU to MSI nvidia GForce GTX770 2GB twin frozr it saves me 90euro’s and get a i7 4820K. Or do you know a better CPU not exceeding 350euro?

What is the model name of the benq?

(Bangtastic) #12

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-4820K+%40+3.70GHz its pretty good

i7 4770k costs about 310

But if you can get i7 4790k its a beast with 4 ghz standard clock! costs about 340 euro
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-4790K+%40+4.00GHz

http://www.amazon.de/BenQ-XL2411Z-Monitor-Reaktionszeit-schwarz/dp/B00HZF2JWA/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1419014820&sr=1-1&keywords=benq+2411z also got 144hz; but you can still buy your asus with 144hz. (probably most cost efficient)

There a lot different versions of xl2411 2420 etc., so look them up.

But keep in mind benq is a GAMING monitor! better read some reviews, what they say about colour and contrast!
im not up to date anymore.

(INF3RN0) #13

I own one, so I’ll let you know before you buy. Otherwise it would be the best performance for price.

Screen is 100 euro’s Cheaper so prob get that I will check some reviews before deciding! I can buy the i7 4970k for 329 so I will get that one! Thx mate

(ToonBE) #15

Thx I ll pm you about it when I am that far!

(spookify) #16

My computer in my sig I bet you can buy now for cheap now days…

Get a little better Graphics cards so you get shadow play and good to go.

(Nail) #17

shadowplay good, nVidia updated it to run on older CPUs like mine

(spookify) #18

Is that new? As far as I know my 580’s still can not have shadow play…

(Rex) #19

Damn your countries prices are expensive.

~ 1600€ for PC, ~ 300 for monitor

My suggestions:

CPU:Intel Core i7-4790K, 4x 4.00GHz, boxed
CPU cooler:be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3
RAM: 2x 8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro rot DIMM Kit 16GB, DDR3-1866, CL9-10-9-27
Graphics card: MSI GTX 970 4GD5T OC
Mainboard: ASUS Z97-Pro, Z97
SSD: Samsung SSD 850 PRO 256GB, SATA 6Gb/s
HDD: Western Digital WD Black 512e 1TB, SATA 6Gb/s
Soundcard: ASUS Xonar Essence STX
PSU: Enermax Platimax 600W ATX 2.4
Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 550D

I don’t know if you prefer certain brands, so I just chose my personal suggestions. (For example: Asus or Gigabyte for the mainboard is only a question of faith )

Monitor:

Either BenQ or Asus with at least 120Hz and FullHD. Go for 24" instead of 21".

To answer some of your questions:

“Will this play dirty bomb at a minimum of 144 FPS on high settings?”

Dunno, because I play only on low. But should be.

“Should I buy a bigger case for future upgrades or is it big enough?”

No idea what you would like to add in the future, but it’s big enough.

“My goal is to get a high performance and stable gaming PC.”

You will definitely have this! You will have the fastest Quad Core CPU available at the moment combined with a very fast graphics card. (Crysis, Metro, … )

“I know my power supply is probably overkill, but I would buy it with eyes on the future (2nd GPU,…)”

For SLI you would need to upgrade your mainboard, PSU and probably CPU. Doesn’t make sense with your current budget anyway, as it makes only sense on high end.

(Nail) #20

operative word CPU, not GPU, I have gtx650ti

my Q8200 didn’t run it earlier, does now
