PC controls - Keyboard layout

(Jamieson) #1

After the recent issue with the Grenade binds and weapon bank I was just curious as to how the controls are currently set up on the PC version of the game.

The main 2 issues for me are how Objectives work and how tools are used for doing objectives and reviving etc.

Will we be able to preselect tools like ET and ETQW or will we be forced to use the useless 1 button does everything for objectives and revivng etc.

I really hope we can preselect tools for objectives, it worked horribly in Wolfenstein as engineers were throwing ammo packs near objectives and medics the same with HP packs when reviving trying to revive people. I just find the pressing a button to do the job figety and not very precise, in My opinion it slows down combat as people run backwards and forwards trying to find the right place so they can hit the button whereas it would be easier with just being able to preselect the tool run in job done.

Will be interesting to see how it will work and what people think.

If I remember correctly Rahdo said something along the lines of the D-pad being mapped to tools and gadgets on the console versions, so my guess is that 1 and 2 cycles between your primary and secondary weapons and 3 to 6 are slots for items such as medpacks, welder, etc. Then we have the use key (bound to F, probably) as well as a grenade key (on G by default) and a melee button (could be triggered by the use key, or be bound to a separate button, don’t know which) Q and E are probably used for leaning. The middle mouse button gives access to the objective wheel. The devs will have to clarify, but seeing how nooooothing is final, perhaps they won’t

I really hope we will be able to pre-select tools.
I can’t imagine not being able to select my tool while sliding to a
wounded teammate.

Pressing 5 (or scrolling with your mouse wheel), moving towards your incapacitated friend, then pressing your left mouse button when you’ve approached your teammate sure is a big difference from moving towards your incapacitated friend and then pressing your Use key.

It did make a difference in ETQW! It took a few hundred milliseconds to equip the revive tool which is quite a long time if you are under fire and you have to revive multiple teammates.

Maybe it works instantly in Brink (you don’t equip it but instantly activate). I guess we’ll have 4 dedicated buttons (D Pad on the controller) and press the right one to drop a med kit or revive a teammate. I just hope it works with scripts so you can do something like pressing 4 to use mouse1 as a revive button and mouse2 to turn it back to normal.

People who prepare and grab whatever they need in advance should always be rewarded.

(Senyin) #7

Yes, isn’t it? =P
I probably have to time the slides better though with a use key.

But seriously, I really don’t want to end up in situations that Jamieson described,
fiddling with a use key, dropping HP when ment to revive ect. I’m nervous enough as it is.
I also simply like selecting my tools whenever I want ,based on what I hear or see.

(H0RSE) #8

I’m sure there will be buttons for selecting each tool, Wolf and QW both had it…

(Voxie) #9

Most likely the dropping of a medpack and the reviving of a teammate won’t be used with the same button (making too many context sensitive actions will lead to the problem you described – you end up doing the wrong action just because you were a few units away from your target).

Even if it’s for a tk-revive ?

(Jamieson) #11

Professional medics will always TK revive, Its the best way to use your resources as a medic and get your team to the most HP.

We don’t even get rewarded for it to because you don’t get any xp because you TK. I always play medic just because I don’t trust anyone else to do it. IF I see someone on low health might aswell headshot them and then pick them up 2 hp packs there good to go, very quick and you can do it to 2 people and further increase healing done.

I’ am glad to see people agreeing with me that it is always better to preselect tools rather than messing about when you get to the objective with people shooting at you.

medkits heal for 100% in Brink…no reason to TK revive.

(Nail) #13

that seems to be the best way to deal with tk/revive questions

(abnorm) #14

every tool and weapon should be preselectable for pc.
I really hate this autonades and stupid instant melee. thats just a waste of good key/mouse spots.
I want to attack with one button only and thats the left mouse button.

(DarkangelUK) #15

tbh instant melee i like, it’s a nice option to get in close and risk it all in the heat of a 1v1 firefight without the need for a weapon switch.

(brbrbr) #16

and this is pretty realistic too.
i mean in combat, warriors, can use firearms as melee weapon by numerous ways.

(abnorm) #17

you cant shot in this time so its pretty the same. but a selectable knife is a way more faster because you dont have this long animation like in bfbc2 for example.
if brink will have a melee attack and a seperate knife I dont care. but if you only have instant melee it would really hurt me.

sry dude, will brink get a realistic game? I hope not and thats not my point.
I just want that SD keep their own roots of gameplay mechanics. I really hope SD see brink as an evolution and do not cut all features made w:et and etqw unique.
You just cant remove elements like strafejump, knife etc. and think that the w:et playerbase will be into brink. It seems that SD really care about the w:et playerbase because Rahdo is very active on crossfire.
but I hope its not only promotion and SD listen.

(Ryan) #18

You want a seperate button for each context related situation? But not be able to pre-select?

(Voxie) #19

Reviving might be activated through the use key, but things like medpacks will without a doubt have their own pre-selectable weaponbanks. What I’m trying to convey is that certain actions (melee, grenades and actions triggered by the use key – reviving, repairing, planting, etc) will be instantly activated through dedicated buttons, while tools such as ammopacks can be pre-equipped through your number keys/your d-pad.

What? Are you serious? Have you ever played CoD4? One button melee can be much faster.

Only a tiny proportion of the W:ET fanbase care about that stuff.
