PB problems

(Boleth) #1

Hey
I have been playing ET for some time, recently I got Tiscali Broadband (upgraded from AOL dial up) and now when I try to play ET PB makes my laptop crash completely, I have to turn off the laptop and turn it back on! I know it is PB as if I play servers which do not use PB it never happens, whereas if I play a server with PB enabled it crashes within about 3 minutes of gameplay, sometimes less.
Spec:
3.2Ghz Intel Pentium 4
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000
512MB RAM
(I know theres something else I need to add to the list but I cant think of it - I’ll edit at a later date)

I have seen a similar problem to this on the forums previously but his problem was overheating, and Im sure PB doesnt use up that much more resources as to make my laptop overheat. I have tried reformatting and reinstalling everything and have tried maually updating PB with pbweb.exe.
Are there any known issues with Tiscali Broadband? My problems seem to have started when I installed this, but I cannot be sure. I am going to try using a friends Broadband software on my laptop and see if I still get the same problem.
But until then does anyone have any possible solutions?
Thanks
Bol

Have you tried disabling the the server side stuff included in PB. I assume that you are not running a laptop as a server.

/pb_sv_disable

should take out the unecessary server side stuff.

I don’t know if this will help, but it used to cure a similar issue I had.

Broadband software?! :}

You using some sort of Tiscali app while connected? Got any built in protection, eg, Firewall? Maybe some ports have been blocked via it… :o

Easiet way is just to uninstall any of the software once the modem is installed and working and just keep the network connection there. Loads of my m8s had problems with NTL Broadband cos the engineer would setup and install and then leave. PCs were running slower and bandwidth being hogged so there new BB lines were still 56kish :> - just copied the network conn, uninstalled NTLs software (keeping note of data, IP’s, DNS addys etc) and then used the copied conn as default… rebooted and there BB was up and running optimised a tad.

Yep same here for BB software, I’ve never installed any NTL software and just plug the ethernet cable in straight away on new builds and it’s straight up
