[drupal=884]Paul Wedgwood to Speak at Kingston University Tomorrow[/drupal]

If you’re a student at London’s prestigious Kingston University, you’ll be able to attend a special guest lecture by Splash Damage’s CEO and Game Director Paul Wedgwood tomorrow. Paul will be speaking about the future of video game development and how to get into the industry as a university graduate, peppered with plenty of anecdotes and tips from Paul’s own experiences. The lecture kicks off at 11 AM tomorrow morning and is open to all games and media students of Kingston.
If you’re unable to make it, we’ll be making Paul’s PowerPoint slides available here on the Splash Damage website soon after.

I didn’t know there was a university grade Game development study?
I wouldn’t mind having Paul in front of the classroom for once though, although I don’t think he’s quite as experienced in mechanical engineering.

Yeah one of my mates did something like this, he spent the past year working in urban outfitters. (clothes shop)

Where are those slides then? :stuck_out_tongue:

There are more and more unis offering games related courses - most of them not very good though. Also people tend to incorrectly assume that just passing a course like that will get them a job in games industry. But then again if the course was sensible enough one can at least get a job as a programmer or in other media related company (depending what the course was actually about).

Aye Aya (lol), it’s probably best to do a course that is relevant to your desired role rather than a course specifically catered to that role, it will give you a better set of skills that would be beneficial in other industries, tying yourself to just gaming isn’t that smart, you may not want to diversify later on in life or so.

Getting a degree in X is only half the picture. Just as important are the other skills you develop alongside learning about X, namely working within a team and collaborating on larger, more challenging projects than one will have ever handled at school or college.

Those team and communication skills are incredibly valuable.

That’s what I more or less meant with “if the course was sensible enough” ;). I actually do computer science with games programming, which gives me some games related stuff, but it’s not limited to that.
Anyway, no matter the course and how good it is, just finishing it is still not really enough, and that’s usually the reason things go wrong.

Im hoping to do ‘Computer Games Design’ next year when i go to uni next year. The course guidelines don’t look to restrictive to me.

Where can I get the powerpoint

I’m only starting to see that now I’m filling my last year with entrepreneurship courses. University is more than getting that paper and waiting to be recruited one day.

Working full time whilst studying part time is also a nice option, you get wage while you earn and you gain real experience, normally a company ‘sponsors’ you so will most likely stick with them after the course is done otherwise you have to pay the fees back if want to go elsewhere afterwards. Not all industries have this option though, it’s quite common in construction though, both on site and office based. Not sure if any game developers do this though.

Careful, you can get infractions for saying things like this.

Apparently he has much more to teach than to learn, who would’ve thought…

Ehhhh infraction … ?

Nevermind!
