[drupal=469]Paul Wedgwood to Keynote Game Horizon on Wednesday[/drupal]

Splash Damage CEO and Game Director Paul ‘Locki’ Wedgwood will be the keynote speaker at the Game Horizon Conference Wednesday morning. Titled “Sneaking in the Back Door to become an AAA Multiplatform Studio”, Paul’s session will relay a few handy business tips for those looking to do just that and include lessons learned during Splash Damage’s six year history. The thing is sponsored by local industry network Game Republic - a special thanks goes out to them for setting it all up.
Game Horizon is a two day networking event for industry executives taking place from June 23 - 24 at The Sage Gateshead in Newcastle. You can find the full conference program here.

I lol’d at that comment

Tell him he’s perfectly free to speak in his own IRC channel once in a while. It’s been about a year and a half since he was last in.

For those interested in the talk, there’s a summary over at GamesBrief: http://www.gamesbrief.com/2009/06/splash-damage-ideas-are-cheap-therefore-get-top-talent-to-execute-excellently/

I have to admit that summary left me slightly confused.

PS: what are the chances to see a video of the keynote on the internet?

Confused in what respect?

I think the Game Horizon organizers may have taped the session but I’m not sure if/when/how those video recordings will be made available to the public. Will try to find out!

I guess I just expected it to be different.

there is another article about it: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24175

Thanks for linking out to Gamesbrief, and sorry that you were confused.

I wrote it quickly in the break after the event and I really wanted to make the point that there were two ways to interpret Paul’s speech (and Dave Jones of Real Time Worlds’ speech the day before http://www.gamesbrief.com/2009/06/dave-jones-apb-massive-success-or-an-epic-fail/).

One was that these two respected developer guys were saying “outsource the business, because a true creative just wants to focus on making the best possible game, come what may”, which could be interpreted as meaning that business is not important for top developers.

The other is that both men have fully grasped and understood the business issues. They understand them, they know what is important and they CHOOSE to delegate.

As someone who helps games developers with their business and online strategy, my fear was that some people might confuse “be good at business but delegate it” with “business doesn’t matter; only making a great game does.”

But I guess maybe I wasn’t clear enough.
