Overwatch and the future of Dirty Bomb

(CCP115) #1

So I’m sure we have all heard of Overwatch by now. If not, in a shellnut it’s a new class based team shooter coming to PC soon, and developed by Blizzard. How do I know it’s coming soon? I don’t, but it was very recently added to the Battle.net launcher, so we have reason to believe a beta at least will be arriving very soon.

So that leads to my question. What do you guys think will happen to Dirty Bomb upon release of Overwatch? Will it have huge profound effects? Will we not even notice? Are they two games so different the audiences won’t mix? What do you all think?

I personally hope that the two don’t affect each other, as they are very separate games, but I can’t say for sure. We could lose a lot of the casual playerbase as they leave to go play what looks to be a much more casual game.

So what do you guys think? Discuss.

I think it’ll be like all of Blizzard’s recent games, very successful but also very mediocre. I think some people will leave this game for Overwatch but I also don’t think anything could change that.

It depends on what SD does with DB by that time. I know with the current state of things, there’s been quite a rabble of people who are saying they will leave DB to Overwatch.

I personally will be playing OW, so will my partner who is much more discontent with the dev process/decision making of DB than I am. But right now we are sticking with DB since we’ve invested enough time/money to wait and see. Personally, I would stick to DB and play OW too if I could.

I think because of the murmuring, a lot of people in this community will probably be curious enough to give it a whirl, but I think ultimately how it affects DB will depend on how the game actually turns out to be. It looks promising, so I could definitely see some community overlap. Some will leave DB, but I think DB fits such a nice little spot between casual and serious that it will appeal to a specific crowd. The style alone of OW might not appeal to a lot of the people that came from CoD or CS to DB, but it may appeal to the people who came here from TF2.

Just depends, but I don’t think it will be a nail in a coffin for DB unless Splash Damage really shoots themselves in the foot with some catastrophic patch like they did with Brink. I have faith in them that while there may be issues right now, it will be a game that continues to improve and will continue to appeal to a particular mass of FPS players.

Overwatch will most likely sustain itself on Blizzard fans alone.
No doubt will some DB players move over (friends playing it). On the other hand, there is potential to increase DBs playerbase. The bigger playerbase, Blizzard has by default means, players that never played something like that, might try and like it.

A small set of them might want something more challenging  , chance for Dirtybomb, to snatch some fresh blood, if the advertising is on point and the overall package, is not too off putting compared to blizzards offering (talking about polishing the menu/money offerings, server stability and such).

blizzards overhyped.

Well, they are big chances that professional player of DB switch to OW because of the lack of cash prize/lans. I even think that some player just play DB only to “train”.

But like you said, blizzard game lately are very succefull and very mediocre at the same time.
Hearthstone is nice but very “simple” like heroes of the storm. There are not many mechanic involved. And these games works because it does have the blizzard logo.
There are far better virtual card game out there.

I personnaly think OW will be bad but i will give it a try anyway.

They weren’t back in the day… These last 5 years though.

I would say that Blizzard have it’s own way to attracts all of the players(HotS situation) but

we do not see a Blizzard previous characters in Overwatch which can push back some

Blizzard players. If Dirty Bomb will make better updates from now to open beta/release of

Overwatch and bring players with some ads or other stuff then it can remain as good

product.

Blizzard products are always good in one side but very simple for another(which makes

hardcore more casually).

I don’t think they’ll effect each other as massively as people are thinking. Despite how they look, DB and OW play and feel very different, at least in my opinion based off what limited play time I’ve had on it at big events. Although I’m sure they’ll both trade some players, I think they’re different enough in the end that they will be able to exist happily together without one being “Better” than the other, instead the choice being decided by what style of gameplay they prefer.

(Jostabeere) #10

Yea, like Heroes of the Storm and Diablo 3. And recent WoW-updates.

I doubt Overwatch will make people stop playing DB. I mean, they don’t stop with TF2, why would Overwatch make them do it?
And I don’t really get that POV. “People will stop X because Y will come out”.
“People will stop playing Quake because UT is coming out”. “People will stop playing CS 1.6 Because CSS comes out”. Said noone ever.
DB and Overwatch are completely different games. DB is like…an objective team-based FPS with slight elements from CoD/BF. Overwatch is more like a TF2 with more Destiny PvP-look for me. Slower gameplay, more gimmicky classes, UT-like maps.

TF2 was out years before DB. Why would TF2 make people leave DB if they came to it when TF2 was already an option.

That’s what I mean. People already have options to leave, but they don’t do it for another game.

(Ghosthree3) #13

They might do it for something new though. In fact some definitely will, doesn’t mean they won’t come back.

(god1) #14

Well it’s a fact that it will take the majority of DB’s playerbase with it.
A lot of people that I talk to play DB mainly because it’s the only non-military shooter that isn’t dead at the moment, after Overwatch comes that isn’t the case anymore and that game probably has something for everyone. Ease of access for your average f2p scrub and huge monetary support for the competitive scene.

(Jostabeere) #15

A fact is something that has really occurred or is actually the case. The usual test for a statement of fact is verifiability, that is, whether it can be demonstrated to correspond to experience. Standard reference works are often used to check facts. Scientific facts are verified by repeatable careful observation or measurement (by experiments or other means).

You wrote down an assumption, not a fact.

(GregHouseMD) #16

What, besides being team-based FPSs, do the games have in common? By the trailers, they seem to be very different games. What motivation would the audience DB caters to have for switching to Overwatch?

(Ghosthree3) #17

._.

How did you write that. Like how did you physically type it out and not go, “wait a second…”.

(elegantRoyalty) #18

well im currently on a break from DB just till the anti cheat gets here, its a bit hard to say how overwatch is going to affect DB , im certainly going to try it , and they are similar in a lot of ways so it might , but they also look quite differnt, looking at the OW classes seems a lot of ultimates just kill everyone sight and im not sure about that.

have to wait and see on this one i think.

Well their username is ‘god1’ so I guess if anyone can talk in such absolutes it’s the number one god. Nobody else though, that would be foolish and make them look silly

Because I’m absolutely sure that this is what’s going to happen. Demand for hardcore/old school shooter mechanics is at an all time low, there’s nothing here to keep anyone but the absolute diehards playing DB.
