OS-X Weirdness - "I am missing essential files"

(rundll32) #1

Hello all,
Been trying to get ET working on a Mac OS-X (10.4) dual G4 for a while now.

I’ve downloaded numerous .dmg’s from multiple sites (including splash damage) all with the same result.

Install of both ET and PB goes fine, when I try to launch the app, I get the error message “Couldn’t load default.cfg - I am missing essential files - verify your installation?”

If I make a blank default.cfg it just moves on to the next in a seemingly large list of files it can’t find. From searching on google it sounds like it may be some sort of permission error, but it seems like this is not a very commong problem. I went through and verified all the files including the pk3 files were readable, but it still doesn’t seem to be working.

----- FS_Startup ------
Current search path:
/Users/me/Library/Application Support/Wolfenstein ET/etmain
/Applications/Wolfenstein ET/etmain

0 files in pk3 files
------CL_Shutdown----

Sys_ShutdownNetworking();

I verified both paths in the search paths were readable, and all the parent directories were readable. I even copied the contents of the application’s etmain folder to the one in my library, still no results.

The files that exist in my etmain directory after I install consist of the following:
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 302 Mar 17 11:58 campaigncycle.cfg
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 15 Mar 21 20:01 description.txt
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 154 Mar 17 12:00 hunkusage.dat
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 378 Mar 17 11:58 lmscycle.cfg
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 1638102 Mar 21 20:01 mp_bin.pk3
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 378 Mar 17 11:58 objectivecycle.cfg
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 228138631 Mar 17 12:01 pak0.pk3
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 51616 Mar 17 12:02 pak1.pk3
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 89910 Mar 21 20:01 pak2.pk3
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 1695 Mar 17 11:58 punkbuster.cfg
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 3807 Mar 17 11:58 server.cfg
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root admin 2258 Mar 17 11:58 stopwatchcycle.cfg
drwxrwxr-x 3 root admin 102 Jul 11 16:29 video

Does this look right? Do you see any problems with this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Here is a kdump of what’s happening. As far as I can tell it never gets to the point of even looking at the pk3 files? Is this right?

It’s normal for ET to look for things outside of .pk3 files, and in various directories before falling back to the versions inside the .pk3 if it doesn’t find them, so the above may not be related to your problem.

Well as far as I can tell from installations on other computers that go well, the default.cfg doesn’t come with the install.

bump? :frowning:

(Nail) #7

not sure, but mention of “rtcwkey” makes me wonder if you’ve installed et in your rtcw folder

(bandit5k) #8

ET uses RTCW code i think. So some RTCW stuff is still in there.

(EB) #9

lol

(Nail) #10

“/Users/me/Library/Application Support/Wolfenstein ET/etmain/rtcwkey”

never seen a rtcwkey in any etmain folder I have

(SCDS_reyalP) #11

Nail: have you used et on mac ? :moo:

The log shows ET trying to load it, so it’s unlikely to be caused by installing to rtcw folder.

(SomeDudeCRO) #12

Nevermind :frowning:

(Nail) #13

installed it on my G4 to make sure our download was working after a few complaints, but never looked through file structure. It just seemed odd to me that rtcwkey was even mentioned. I don’t have access to the Mac for next month so I have no way to check right now

system problems; permissions; maybe corrupt system files

hello there. i am having exactly the same problem as reported by rundll32. i’ve tried re-install, change of permissions to 766 and 777, creating an empty default.cfg. no luck

was there a resolution to this?

i have powerbook ppc g4 with tiger. setting up rtcw 2.60.

appreciate any advice. thanks!

(kamikazee) #16

Shouldn’t that be W:ET 2.60?

(sevenfour) #17

yep, thanks! i stand corrected.

setting up up “enemy territory” 2.60 that is indeed.
