Opensource Coding Contest

(dutchmeat) #1

Hey,

I’ve seen alot of map contests, and topic of map modifications, but as a coder I’d like to know if there still are other coders around to play along :).
And maybe we will create a cool gametype players can use in the future.

The contest will be opensource, so if other modowners are interested, they might implement your gametype in their mod.

This won’t be a total conversion, but you can use extra resources like maps, sounds, and models.

Deadline
1st of March, 2010

Goal
The goal here is to make the funniest/ coolest gametype.

Rules

  • You may not use existing gametypes(like instagib) and change it a bit.
  • Make clean and readable code
  • You will use the stock ET source Or ETPub as a base, so no NQ, or whatever.
  • The mod has to be bugfree before you submit it.
  • You may submit up to 2 mods.
  • You are allowed
Depending on how many people will participate, each person will get a week to show their mod on a server I’ll arrange.

After all mods are shown to the public, voting will start.

Obviously suggestions are welcome.

Have fun, and good luck.

PS. I will be participating as well.

i can’t code, but… perhaps u should allow using etpub/nq. otherwise there is shitload of basic things to rewrite.

(dutchmeat) #3

Hmm, maybe etpub, for security reasons then.
Thanks

If I understood right, the goal is to create a new “gametype/feature”. Not a full blown mod. Let’s take something like panzerwar or knifewar as an example.

(dutchmeat) #5

Correct. This won’t be a total conversion but you can use extra resources like sounds, maps and models.

(Cambodunum) #6

… sounds funny/good
… but im afraid i wont find the time

(stealth6) #7

what does the winner get? need some incentive. Also couldn’t you just broaden the approach by saying the coolest feature, voted by the public.

That way you don’t have to be a pro

(reaply) #8

Someone needs to make my cakefaust.

(Cambodunum) #9

looooool … i like that guy xD

(reaply) #10

“Why thank you, would you like a piece of pie?”

(-SSF-Sage) #11

Why didn’t my panzerwurst do it?

(reaply) #12

Rather have an knifewurst. With a cakefaust.

(twt_thunder) #13

why not use the time together all of you coders and come up with something cool like driving tanks in ET or similar??

(aaa3) #14

short deadline, [at least implied, or maybe just me feeling though of it] single contestants, ambitious goals, and just for nothing… this is doomed before the beginning.

and worst of all, the only thing which would make sense, to “port”, implement, a popular but existing [or even widespread] game mechanism [no, dont ask me any examples im not having any in my mind when writing this just thinking in general] is explicitly forbidden.
its commonplace in games world that inventing something really new is not really the holy grail for which everyone should strive and be awed by its thought.
and now we want it on a mass scale and in so short time that it might not even enough just to think it out in ones head.

it was thudpwn’s last reply which triggered me posting into this; this is so tragical in some way, lol. a steering vehicle; come on, how many times this had been reliably and production-readily implemented? in the et world. more than 1 already!

there were huge numbers of various mods coming and gone; do any1 remembering when wezel had the imod thing in his sig or has his particular picture with the tank on it? vampires, dukenukem, domination/powerball, eastfront; all abandoned, or finished but “shitted down” [in unbroken english the expression actually “not giving a shit”] by players…

“driving tanks”… n-th iteration; that was so typical, so… making one reflecting [& with a faint tint of a facepalm too :)] on the past orwtfnvm

has to be bugfree (!!)… in this time, in such circumstances… this must be a black joke… and even that, just plain wrong and foolish as a requirement for a contest of this type.
clean and readable code… and why disqualifying another populace, if som1 is creating smth which wins over the minds of ppl, it will be fixed/transscribed anyway…
lol?
it was you at the first place who declareed it an open-source contest…

aaa3.

appendix.
yes, i bet there are a lots of coders, but there are also a lots of existing stuff which they could code, and many coding-related activities for which it wasnt coders or coding which would be needed…
late edit: i removed last part, it were some mind runnings, quite long, partially related to this contest too, on et core engine going open sorurce, which isnt.

(Qualmi) #15

rather write basic tutorials for et coding. ive seen not really much in the net yet, if not i have seen NONE which is specifically handling et and the source code.

…not that i would need them :stuck_out_tongue:

(aaa3) #16

f**k tutorials, we have plenty and enough. ok, specifically et. then that why?

(coders are coders man, they dont need an et coding tutorial, a few enlightening post in general q3 most probably just fine, +maybe a small overview of the differences towards rtcw and wet. and i bet there are treatises on the subject…)
programmers, coders, ‘hackers’, mel:), u know… if some1 cant, then dont touch code, that simple. were not talking about windsurfing or lol

(Cambodunum) #17

… dude whats your problem ?!
… aint the right place to bitch about everything, dont ya think?

(Qualmi) #18

jep aaa3 watch your lang pls. last 10 posts from you at least have words like “sht" "fck” or whatever in it.

also look at the q3 world. everything is really well documented there, unlike et. that was what i was talking about. and you dont really have a clue on how much work some of us are into. i bet you are a unemployed tard never studied anything, yet dont know anything, then comes here and bitch about things you dont have a clue about. what was your contribuition to et world actually. show me some

(aaa3) #19

none. and?

@ language… well, ok. if it bothers u… (lol.) &@cambo, why u think i have a problem or bitching? i jsut expressed myself on the subject… [such a] coding contest, et coding tute… this had to be said. and i didnt do [intend?] it in any manner hostile to persons. well qualmi didnt like my style. what then? i dont mind what he said to me i mean its ok with me no problem.

(reaply) #20

It would have been cool if it was started 2 years ago maybe even 3 when ET was at its prime.

SIDENOTE: So SD is going to release the ET source code?
