OPEN GL on WINDOWS VISTA

I read a while ago that Vista would emulate open GL (I am assuming on DX 10) if this is true would it not slow down games like doom 3, quake 4 and quake wars ? As soon as Microsoft make vista beta 2 public I will benchmark doom 3 and quake 4 on it.

Can anyone back up the above statement of emulation of open GL or is it just a myth?

Microsoft had said that OGL in Vista would be supported in two ways:

  • Vista would fully support the core OGL 1.4 API but no extensions. This would be “emulated” through Vista’s D3D9 driver.
  • Vista could use the IHV’s OGL ICD with no limitation on version and/or extensions but that the Vista GUI would stop being accelerated while the OGL app was running.

After much complaining Microsoft has recently announced that OGL ICDs would no longer break Vista’s Aero. So, AFAIK the crysis is over.

That works for me …as long as the open GL is supported with out a big hit to performance I am cool with it. But MS need to stop being jerks and start support the open standards.

All you need to do is look at IE, MS Exchange and their communication programs to see how much Microsoft give a damn about open standards. The sad thing is that when MS stop supporting other standards and everybody else is forced out of the OS competition market, MS will own ALL computer equipment and do with it what they please.
