One on One Firefights

(schmeisser) #1

I nearly always die when I end up in a close range firefight. I think my eye/hand coordination is average, I jink, bob, strafe, run away, etc. Still, I usually get wasted. I learned how inaccurate and wussy the FG42 is first hand, by blowing through 20 rounds to no effect, then getting killed on reload. Any tips, other than sheer avoidance, to help me train a bit of basic survival? I made my own excercise by hosting my own server, planting some mine flags, and using them as targets while running around, trying to keep them in my crosshairs. I know that’s no substitute for gameplay, but maybe it will help me get better. Suggestions?

Lots of practice (six hours a day every day) and a new PC helped me.

Blushing Bride is right…he has improved no end that way.

The best tips I can give you are these:

(i)ALWAYS keep your crosshair at head height. Even to the extent that you predict what head height would be when running up stairs etc.

(ii)Always run around as if there will be someone around the next corner/be constantly ready for action.

(iii)Use the force.

      Best of luck m8

You should lead a little bit to compensate for lag… that means shoot just in front of where your enemy is… if you fire directly at a moving target, in all likelihood your shots will whiz right past him. And yes, shoot at the upper torso/head.

Having a good computer doesnt hurt either  Better fps = greater accuracy.

anti lag should compensate for that, if enabled (default i guess)

Well thats wrong for starters… It high Rate of fire means you can take someone out before they even know you are there

Tips
1)Remember AIM FOR THE HEAD 3-4 bullets in head kills 10-20 in body kills (like he said above- To do this ALWAYS WALK around with the Cross hairs at head height)

  1. ALWAYS MOVE

  2. move left to right Quickly and keep cross hairs at there head height and maybe throw a jump in now and then (i jump when moving back into where there are firing as they) i.e as I move to the left he will try to follow me and as i run out of space or his cross hair cathies up with me I will quickly move to the right and Jump so his bullets if any will hit me in the Toe and then hes playing catch up again trying to move the crosshair to the right to get me, then jump back again etc etc. (PLZ NOTE: remember jumping will make you less acurate nut dosnt really matter at close range…)

  3. IF you have to reload try to move towards cover before you have to so you can reload in safty… i.e Like a corner of a building, tank etc

  4. Try to use the Sprint Button. You have already made it hard for them to hit you moving left to right and jumping… now throw in Bursts of speed… He will be shooting in front of himself while you are behind him blowing his brains out

To add to the original question, what is the best method for aiming when in an extremely close range shootout? Like when your opponent is 1 foot in front of you as you round a corner. I find that in these situations that even when the opponent fills nearly the entire screen, and I think I can’t possibly miss, that I usually die. What am I doing wrong?

Any tips for this?

(damocles) #8

You’re not going for headshots. At point blank range, aiming for the head is the only way to survive.

Of course, it’s easy to say this, but when you’re being shot and your view is flying around because of it and the target is strafe sprinting then it’s a lot harder than it sounds.

And just for the record, I think people who jump are lame. They seem to think it saves them or makes them a harder target - wrong. All it does is make you less accurate and your movement pattern easier to predict.

The best thing is to play as often as u can ,people can help u with tips and suggestions but unless you put the time and effort to try and improve your skills its not gonna happen.

IMO theres no real short cuts to make u good overnight the key is practice as much as u can with the methods given to u in this thread and iam sure u will start to see improvements in your play aswell as your frag rates.

As long as ur determined to improve u will - GOOD LUCK!!!

why dont u host a server and get someone 2 join it and go in ur team with freindly fire disabled (so u cant hurt heach other) both go say feild op’s and load up on ammo and just run about try 2 shoot each other as much as u can. I know it might not be much fun but ull get alot of aim, shooting, moving practice in on a live target without havein to wait on him respawning :stuck_out_tongue:

  • My less-than-expert bit of advice is don’t get frustrated with it (anyone who played on the SD server last night is probably chuckling at me saying that), when you get frustrated your aim goes to shit and you start doing daft things.

  • Spectate some of the good players on a server you’ve joined.

  • Try not to go in unsupported and think about how you enter/exit areas, getting your “angles” right can help (easier said than done in a game as frantic as ET).

  • It’s not always you that’s at fault though, quite often you have a team mate who’s shooting you in the back (accidentally) at the same time that the enemy is shooting you from the front - you don’t always notice it.

…and like everyone else says; practice, practice, practice…

Ok here is somthing my clan does for aim practice,I feel you could do it if you hosted a server and had some friends playing with you.

We call it Dualing

First off make shure FF is OFF.

2nd Load compition settings and make shure warmup damage is set to all.

3rd get everyone on the same team, this is so you can tell if your shots are hitting,by watching there health bar.

4th pic someone to dual, and have one of you toss a nade out.when the nade blows its show time.

when its over the loser can see how much damage he did to the winner and the winner does a /kill to get full health.

it’s been said before, but I think these are key elements:
-aim for head (always)
-move around (dont be a sitting duck)
-spectate good players (to learn)
-dont use autoreload (it hinders you sometimes)
The last point is that you should reload manually. Because autoreload can be bad in certain situations. Sometimes, after emptying your machinegun, you must draw your gun to finish off an opponent (or draw the syringe, if you are a medic and want to do a quick revive). Autoreload might sabotage that.
Autoreload is good, but I think that you have to learn to live without it if you want to win more duels.
And, once again: aim for the head!

(Kendle) #14

That last point is a good one. AutoReload is bad, as is NoAmmoAutoSwitch. Use these and the game may reload your gun or switch you to a different weapon right when you least need it to.

Keep pressing that reload button whenever you get the opportunity, even if you’ve only just fired a few rounds. Never go running round a corner with only a couple of bullets in the gun, reload first. In fact, try not to run round corners at all. Go up to the corner and lean to see what’s round them before you go charging in.

Oh, and has anyone mentioned aim for the head?

(pgh) #15

2 great things i’ve found usefull for one on one is:

a/ Instead of hoping to aim constantly with the mouse… aim for the head and strafe about moving circle without removing aim from original position… hard to explain just I watch people who aim, strafe, reaim, etc… just keep it still and move…

b/ If your in each other faces v a strong player instead of running about, just duck and shoot up at there face… if the player was aiming at your head its gonna take bout 2 seconds tops till he realises your down a bit and hopefully by that time he’ll be dead… works for me.

ps/ Medics for one on one :stuck_out_tongue: Axis Medic with Thomson = Daddy.

(_NeT_WalBanger) #16

Hmmm you must be harder to hit because if hes a good shot and is at head height if you jump then he will only hit you in the body= less damage (This is obviasly good while you are reloading etc)

(ExP|Maximus191) #17

Also turn the gun model off and learn to just use the crosshair. This will increase your accuracy loads

(dJ6i8bY) #18

umm just a simple tip u probibly allready know… when goung around a corner… dont run up and turn… turn just before and straif out. it lets u c whats around the corner faster and also gives u a little more time 2 shoot someone if thay are there

(Loffy) #19

yes. That is so true.
Winning duels is about the things we discussed. But also , as has been stated above, it takes a long time of gaming to get that awareness you need to stay on top. A situation awareness that (almost subconsciously) guides the movement. Hard to explain.
It’s getting very zen now. But, players win duels often because they are one step ahead. And if they get the first shot, they are likely to win the duel. Your initial post said “nearly always die when I end up in a close range firefight”. The skilled player that killed you in such a fight had, perhaps, won the duel already before the first shot was fired. He/she was “ready”. The skilled player knew before hand that there was a duel coming up. SwordOfDamocles said keep your crosshair headheight, always, and that is an example of this!
Sikta mot hjarnorna!

i’ve noticed that a lot of players try and avoid being shot by either running backwards in a straight line or by strafing sideways in a straight line. People who move in straight lines are easier to kill unless they’re uber crackshots
