OH now I get it, see I wasn't here for Quake Wars...

(bastuden) #1

Yeah I am new to splash damage and did not know that quake wars was so successful, I was just looking up the reviews and see it scores high score across the board. Now I understand why the community here is so tight and why everyone has so much high hope splash damage can pull this thing together.

With SD there is always Rhyme to the Reason, It may not always be the perfect one but its def the lesser of two evils, SD gets so much right with their games that you end up wishing half the features were in your other fav games. Its a company of Gamers making games that other Gamers WANT, not force fed, not everyone will be happy but I feel they hit the sweetspot of the middleground.

actually quake wars wasnt that big hit. it was wolfenstein enemy territory which made them popular amongst us pc gamers.

they created something that no one ever experienced before and they gave it away for free!

ok, there were similar concepts at the time like rtcw, the prequel to wolf et more or less, but the pure objective based gameplay in a shooter was never done before like it was in wolf et.

and it was released for free!!! you can still download and play it. lots of people actually still play it.

I always saw Quake Wars as a hidden gem. High scoring but niche.
Really good game (although I can’t fly helicopters at all) but unloved by the general public, again: I think because people never get the objective style gameplay.

Nothing like flying through the sky with your Icarus only to learn that GDF can get a lock on you with a rocket launcher  good times.

Honestly, I think that both Quake Wars and Brink would have been much better off being F2P with vanity stuff like hats etc (TF2 style) for sale in a store.

I loved W:ET and played it many hours a day for years. The maps were great, even some of the custom ones, like the North Pole, seemed very well thought out. Even though the game was free I would have happily sent SD $50 for it.

As for ET:QW. I think it’s the best team based objective game available, huge maps, cool vehicles, non-stop action, servers full of people on mics giving helpful feedback to the team, intuitive interface, a challenging rank system, and, most importantly, a Field Ops class. ET:QW has it all and I’ll keep playing it and Brink. I just wish SD would bring the ET:QW stat site back up instead of redirecting to Activision.

I thnk it was down to ET:QW suffering from very little advertising. I mean I only found the game several years after release in a bargain bin.

Bloody brilliant game though!

(Crytiqal) #8

ETQW wasn’t advertised at all as far as I know.

The ONLY reason I heard about it (apart from this website) was when I was playing wolfenstein enemy territory and typed in my browser http://www.enemyterritory.com and then I saw ETQW.

Imagine my surprise

(Lol, it seems nowadays it gives a blank activistion page)
Thank god I made a full local copy of the website so I can still look at it if I want xD

ET:QW looks sick. May be picking this up very soon, only for Xbox. Looks like fun to me. Hopefully it offers split screen.

(StarkRavinMad) #10

I don’t know that it was terribly good on Xbox, and it definitely isn’t something fun to run in single player.

The PC version was bliss. I bought it at release, and played it constantly until BC2 came out. Played BC2 for about 2 months and then returned to ETQW until Brink released. ETQW was a great mix of indoor/outdoor and infantry/vehicle and ASYMMETRIC gameplay.

Brink doesn’t have me hooked like ETQW did, but I haven’t given up yet.

It’s unlikely you will find any players online as well. I would say get the game for PC or leave it be.

ah. I might give it a try anyway. I am starting to pick up older games on the cheap and having some fun. as long as I don’t go into it expecting something else, I think I’ll be fine. But thanks! I let you know how it is once I pick it up. I just picked up a couple of games this week, so don’t know exactly when I’ll get some more!

(NotARelevantTarget) #13

I grabbed ET:QW on the 360 when I saw it cheap, purely because I’d heard of ET and I’m a sucker for Strogg.
There is indeed barely any players regularly on, but if you start a match and just play you’ll usually start to gather players, most people search for a match in progress and give up if they don’t get in one immediately.
As for the game itself, I love it, it’s great and you should get it.
Distinct classes, focus on objectives, unique vehicles, big maps, comedy strogg, all good.
getitgetitgetit
COMEDY STROGG. God save SD and all who sail in her.

While I love SD to death and ETQW is truly a gem of a game, the console versions were truly “ported” bastardizations by 3rd party companies. They do not represent the PC version of the game. SO many things are done horribly poorly. Purchase for the console w/ these words of caution.

However, if you have a PC that’s capable of running Doom 3, get ETQW and play the game the way it was meant to be played. It’s worth every penny on that platform.

I’ll keep that in mind, but will probably check it out anyway. It’s not expensive for Xbox used and at least worth a go even if it is not perfect. Thanks for the advice!

ET was a RTCW mod. More people picked it up on because it was free.
But it was nothing new compared to RTCW, only more maps, tweaked models,
new abilities and weapons. The objective game-play was already there.
The movement and speed were already there as well.

ET:QW was ahead of it’s time in the objective arena.
Released without a comp-mod which killed off lots of teams.
Spam/nerfs/hit-reg killed the pubs.
ET:QW pro-mod was a breath a fresh air.

(tokamak) #17

ETQW suffered under external factors, the competition was high and it didn’t get the promotion it deserved. Brink had no competition and deccent promotion.

Grab it, right now it’s as populated as Brink but a much more fulfilling experience. I wish I could start it again, discover everything and find new tricks. Get it on the PC though, the console versions weren’t done by SD.

Even the graphics can be jaw-dropping at times. Even until now, years later games haven’t been able to match such amazing terrain.

actually ETQW was a hit- look at SD main page- 1.6 million PC players… i dont know about your math, but that’s a pretty big number…

an NO they didnt “create something no one ever experienced before”- RTCW was the first objective team based game… remember Beach? plant TNT on the wall, defend it… rush the DOC room, grab them and transmit them at the radio.? what does that sound like-- O, let me think?? O yeah Island on ETQW! and that’s just one map out of the HUNDREDS created for WOLF… the majority them, objective team based- most of which came out well before W:ET.

I enjoyed W:ET- once the modders got ahold it, when it first came out, the game sucked… big time!! then the modding community took over and gave us PRO and the game became what it is today… very polished and very popular…

If memory serves, W:ET was suppose to be an expansion pack to WOLF- the SP sucked or had issues or something…

“create something no one ever experienced before” ppffff, pleeeeassse!!

i dont think it does but ill be picking it up soon so we can play together

“1.6 million PC players”

Is that unique gamer tags or copies sold?
