NVIDIA Vs ATI

(Cosmos) #1

This might start a big war, but which is better.
What I mean by “better” is what do you think to it yourself. One might get higher 3dmark 2001 scores but that doesn’t make much difference, which gives better visual quality and performance all round and which is the best GFX card to buy out there?

(SCDS_reyalP) #2

The one that is ‘better’ is the one that gives me more FPS for the $, which changes every few months.

(BlackDeath) #3

Better…You mean for today??

ATI is in the lead right now, but Nvidia is coming out with a “Radeon Killer”.

Usually they leapfrog each other every month or so.

(Pegger) #4

I like to to consder game compatibility and driver issues. I found that ATI has some game compatibility problems.

If you can’t play that brand new $50 game that you waited for months to be released until there is a fix for that “issue”, then you have the wrong card.

(damocles) #5

It’s pretty simple. ATI tend to lead the technology race by about 2 months. NVidia lead the drivers race by about 2 months. Nvidia are typically more compatible (but not infallible) whereas ATI tend to give better benchmark scores. If you want a penis extension, buy ATI and get 3dMark2003. If you want a card that should play most new games perfectly well but maybe at 5-7 fps less, then go NVidia.

And if it matters to you - D3 is being optimised for ATIs first as JC has a fondness for them. Whether or not this means that the end result will be D3 running better on ATIs remains to be seen.

(rgoer) #6

nVidia’s linux support shames ATI, so they get my vote.

(Riftgarde) #7

I’m planning a jump from a ti4400 to a 9800 pro for the image quality.

(twiFight) #8

my brother went from a ti4600 to a 9800 pro a week ago
it gives good quality and high fps but expect some driver/game issues

(sniser) #9

Hmm, the last thing I heard was ID being pretty pissed at ATI because one of their employees leaked that D3 Alpha… but who cares about D3 anyway, all hail HL2! ducks

(Pirate_X) #10

If you want a gfx card you can use right out of the box, with amazing software support, go NVidia…

I just picked up a GeForce FX 5600 today… I don’t see it being worth the extra $400 to go to the 5900… It runs like a dream, I haven’t had a single issue yet.

(damocles) #11

all hail HL2!

Yes, all hail HL2!!!

Duck? Why? HL2 is gonna kick ass. D3 will be technically more impressive. HL2 will be hands down the better game.

(Sauron|EFG) #12

I got a 9600Pro a while back, although a GF4 4800 probably gives higher FPS in RtCW/ET. No compatibility issues, but the frickin fan broke down after 3 weeks. Still waiting for the exchange card.

The driver support by ATI seems pretty good nowdays, with all their drivers being WHQL certified (which at least indicates Windows stability). Not at all like a couple of years ago when I wouldn’t even consider buying ATI.

Since I would never pay for a top-of-the-line card I don’t care which card is fastest this week, I’m just happy there are two good alternatives.

How do you know this exactly… as neither game is out yet? According to id Software they’re going for the best Single Player game they’ve ever made story wise, etc. They’re obviously putting a lot of effort into it as it’s not coming out until 2004. I’m just looking for you reasoning as to why HL2 will be so much better “hands down” than D]|[

I have no doubt that HL2 will be an amazing game… but to pass a judgement already on a hands down better game this early seems a bit premature to me.

(Cosmos) #14

I’m looking forward to Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 not just one of the games.

How do you know this exactly… as neither game is out yet

I’ve seen the videos for both. HL2 has variety, story, AI, massive interactivity, an amazing engine capable of huge outdoor environments coupled with intricately detailed indoor environments. D3 has Doom monsters with a few new ones, Doom weapons with a few new ones, a rehashed doom1 story, and an engine that prefers indoor locations (not that it can’t handle outdoors, but don’t expect them to be much than story progressing areas).

HL2 may not have the cutting edge lighting technology of D3, but it has pushed the boundaries in so many more important ways, like game AI and physics. D3 by the looks of it is relying heavily of set peices to make the monsters seem intelligent, whereas the HL2 baddies have a more flexible AI system meaning they will be ablke to react to your decisions more.

I’m not saying D3 will be a bad game per se, just that HL2 so far is blowing it clean out of the water. But they have almost a year (or more if they put it back) to develop features and AI to compete. But I doubt they will. Companies are already signing up to use the D3 engine, and I doubt ID would like other companies to release their games before D3 is out. The engine is it’s selling point far more than the game is. It’s how they make their real money. Their games sales probably don’t even make them half what they will make on engine sales.

And I know this because I’m psychic. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nice Nvidia FX card reviews, 9 FX cards are reviewed here:

(BlackDeath) #17

He speaks the truth! Not to mention HL2’s out-of-this-world physics, and i expect the same revolutionary AI that HL so fondly brought us.

We’ve got high expectations for both games, and we’ll see if they can deliver.

41.09 drivers are most stable for me

first thing to consider is that asking on any forum anywhere will result in rather a lot of utter rubbish in the responses.

the second thing to remember is if you dont even give a price guide, nobody can have a clue what you want, which makes you wonder how they manage suggestions. if you simply want to know ATi vs nvidia at all price levels, stop buying into all the fanboy crap.

just read the following, plus any more sites you find and consider trustworthy (should kill off about 3/4 of sites at least), and get whatever is best for your money.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see if you’re right…
