nVidia GT 430 / GTS 450: Question regarding W:ET performance

(nUllSkillZ) #1

Hi,

because I want to buy a new (silent + low energy) PC I’ve got the following question:
Does anyone run W:ET with a nVidia Gt 430 or GTS 450 (silent) graphics card?
How much FPS would be possible (with which W:ET options)?

Thank you very much in advance.

p.s.:
Operating system would be GNU/Linux Aptosid (Debian sid) or GNU/Linux Debian.
CPU would be an Intel sandy bridge processor (not sure at the moment if it will be an i3-2100 or an i3-2100T or an i5-2390T).
The PC would be used for office/internet most of the time and a little bit for playing W:ET.

The only problem I can tell you is that Etwolf is more Cpu intensive rather than GPU intensive:
I will go for the Gt430 1 gb (if you use the default power supply). It’s a gamming card very efficient for it’s price. It needs much less power than other cards, but it runs fast.
Gts450 is obviously more powerful, but I don’t know if it will requiere a 650 w power supply. It may give you problems.
Ask the shop assistant better.

As FFSturm mentioned already, the original WolfET is CPU bound and doesn’t gain much of a powerful gpu. For myself, I’am using a GTS 450 card, it’s so far fine coz I am running it on an older C2D E6750 so I wouldnt profit much of a faster card for example like a GTX580.

But in your case I would think over a GTX 550 or GTX 560 (not the GTX 560TI just plain GTX 560!) because it’s newer and better than a GTS 450 or even a GTS 430.

A good 400-500w power-supply (like from Seasonic) would be for your setup sufficient and more than enough.

Thank you very much for the answers.

Reason for GT 430 / GT 440 or GTS 450 has been:
There are versions with no fans.

Some helpful sides I’ve found:
A comparison of a 8800 GTX (the card I own at the moment) and a GTS 450:
http://www.hwcompare.com/7699/geforce-8800-gtx-vs-geforce-gts-450/
Other comparisons are possible.

List with many GPU’s:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

There are some more sides in german.

A list so far (due to the ranking on the second page):
GT 430 < GT 440 < 8800 GTX < GTS 450

Not sure if I should try GT 430 / GT 440 first.
And try the GTS 450 if this not works.

Wolf ET is a Really Old Game, Even my Onboard Radeon 4200HD Card can Run it Full Speed @ 1080p

(FFSturm) #6

You can even run in on worse cards like radeon hd 2400 pro and the legact x1650 series with max settings.

My old office 2004 computer runs it fine too. NVidia GeForce 6200 AGP. Before it were an integrated card, and ET has just less FPS. It just needs RAM, had 256 Mo and was not able to play other than 2.55 local…

An update:
My new PC:

  • [li]CPU:[/li]Intel Core i3-2100
    [li]Mainboard (µATX):[/li]Intel DH67BL (B3)
    [li]GPU:[/li]MSI N450GTS Cyclone 1GD5
    [li]HDD/SSD:[/li]Crucial m4 SSD 128GB
    [li]RAM:[/li]Kingston ValueRAM 4GB
    [li]Case:[/li]Lian Li PC-8N
    [li]PSU:[/li]be quiet! Straight Power E8 400W
    [li]CPU Cooler:[/li]Scythe Ninja 3
[li]Fans:[/li]3 * be quiet! Silent Wings 120 PWM
    [li]OS:[/li]Debian GNU/Linux (testing / Wheezy)

It seems that sometimes the FPS drop beneath 76 FPS.
Not sure if this is map related.
Settings are:
1680*1050 and everything max.
But it’s very quiet.
Even during/after gaming.
Never sure if the fans still rotate
CPU temperature is 41° C after gaming (measured with “lm-sensors”) and 37° C on desktop.

Edit:

OS added.
CPU temperature added.

A little update.
I crashed the motherboard during a firmware upgrade.
In the meantime I use a reserve PC with an Intel Celeron G540 (with integrated HD graphics):
37 FPS (and above) with 1280*1024 and everything minimum.

My guess:
With the new HD 4000 IGP of the new IvyBridge CPU’s it should be possible to play W:ET without a graphics card with higher details / resolutions at the same price with lower power consumption.

Reserve PC:

  • [li]CPU:[/li]Intel Celeron G540
    [li]Mainboard (mITX):[/li]Intel DH67CF (B3)
    [li]GPU:[/li]Integrated HD graphics
    [li]HDD/SSD:[/li]Crucial m4 SSD 64GB
    [li]RAM:[/li]Kingston ValueRAM 4GB
    [li]Case:[/li]Lian Li PC-Q07B
    [li]PSU:[/li]Cougar A300 300W
    [li]CPU Cooler:[/li]Prolimatech Samuel 17
[li]Fan:[/li]be quiet! Silent Wings 120 PWM
    [li]OS:[/li]Debian GNU/Linux (testing / Wheezy)

It should run, however, if you have good enough CPU,then it’s ok.

i3 2100 series should be good.

Well, my friend were able to get 360 euro worth gaming machine, what was able to run Battlefield 3 at medium settings in 1920x1080 resolution with 39FPS.

(nUllSkillZ) #11

Might be a PC with an AMD CPU with IGP.
AMD’ CPUS with IGP consume more power than Intel’s.
But they are cheaper.

Because I use GNU/Linux I prefer Intel because of drivers.

(Runeforce) #12

On my generations past laptop (dual core @ 1.7), with a Intel integrated gfx (i910gm) I get around 20-30 fps @ 1280x800 (may drop further with lot’s of action on-screen.)

Any dedicated gfx card over Geforce 4 will run W:ET perfectly. Hell, you could even run Doom3 on medium settings and rarely drop below 30 fps with Geforce 4.

Basicly, you can hardly buy a computer that can’t run w:et well (perhaps with the exception of low-end netbooks.)

That was not a direct answer to your question, but related.
