Nvidia graphic card update probs

(4$ure) #1

I don’t know if anyone else has experienced this, but I updated my little Geforce 4 Ti 4800 SE to the latest drivers on the Nvidia site with intention of trying out the Savage Demo (Nvidia driver update 52.16 I think it was called), but it seems to cause problems with ET.

When I log onto a server it’s fine for about 5 seconds then just freezes up. I’ve tried taking out my ETconfig and autoexec files to run the game with default settings, but this doesn’t seem to solve it.

Has anyone else had this problem? Before anyone says it they were definitely the right drivers for the card as it was listed on the official Nvidia site.

Suggestions appreciated.

This is porbably the fifth time i see a thread about this problem. People please use the search function before posting.
Anyway, yes ther’s a problem with the 52.16 drivers and PunkBuster(it’s got nothing to do with ET). You should be fine if you just disable PunkBuster but I recomend you rollback to older drivers cause playing without PB is really not a good idea.

Sorry about the repetition. At least it confirms I’m not going mad. Thanks.

check the nVidia driver archive page and install the 45.33 drivers. 53.03 is beta?

I had this problem just after upgrading my CPU to a 2400XP; total screen freeze after only a few seconds play.

It drove me nuts like a steering wheel in my flies for days while I messed about with various configuration.

Now, I could get the game to run at 800x600 indefinitely but 1024x768 would die in seconds - Unlikely to be a memory leak or any such. Most other games like Q3a and UT would run fine but same problem with UT2003.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, later versions of the Nvidia drivers (mine are the Linux binaries) allow/change features on the card and this apparently can cause a volts drop on some mobos across a couple of the AGP channels.

I set my AGP voltage in the bios to 0xEE (the max Nvidia recommends) and discovered that ET would play longer at 1024x768 and then freeze again.

Finally, I had a look at my CPU core volts which were at 1.67/1.68 (not stable) and my CPU is rated at 1.68V so I took my arse in my hands and used the over-volts control to give it a 7.5% boost.

The CPU runs a couple of 'C warmer but merrily chugs along without problem and plays ET without a hitch now.

I don’t know if this has anything to do with your problem but you could always try it out.

WARNING: All of the above has potential to cause damage to your system (but so does switching it on)

Apparently there is some sort of a conflict with the new drivers and punk buster. You’ll probably find that all of your other games will work fine with the new drivers (as long as they don’t use pb).

I had this problem with punkbuster and the 52.16 drivers, so I was hoping they’d fixed it with 53.03, but no luck. :frowning:

I guess I’ll be using the 45.23 drivers forever…

Anyone ever noticed their graphics improve when they update drivers?? I sure as hell havent on my crappy G4MX or any of the crappy cards ive ever had

For winXP users experiencing the problem, the workaround seems to be either to use older drivers (pre-5x.xx series) or to either set “pb_system 1” in the console – appears to work mostly for those with FX cards – or to do that AND run the game in win9x compatibility mode, done by right-clicking the shortcut and selecting properties. the latter is usually what works for those on older geforce cards.

some people are unaffected, and a few report the problems on 52.16 have gone on 53.03, but more seem to find the problem is persisting. I’ve contacted nvidia and…

Thanks for your feedback. NVIDIA QA have tried to reproduce this lockup problem with PunkBuster many times. So far this issue cannot be reproduced. It is currently under investigation. Can you please provide your system configuration.

Perhaps a missing question(s) is are you overclocking, and which oc tool used?

(Azarael) #11

I didn’t have anything oc’ed on my system when I had the problem and I try to avoid running any extra processes to keep things running smoothly. I wonder what could be behind all this.

(LKS_FreeMan) #12

Well I tried the 53.03s today and I still get the lockup problem. I checked out the release pdf with the new drivers and it makes no mention of this particular problem. I find it funny that nVidia is unable to replicate the problem even though so many people experience it. Oh, BTW my system isn’t overclocked either.

(daemord) #13

same here no overclocking, interesting enough, the 45 drivers also produced the lockup when i was running 2 monitors off me graphics card and even when i stoped, still persisted in doing so, running 44 now on a single monitor and no problems (touch wood) anoying though.

(Azarael) #14

As a little suggestion, i’d recommend disabling the 2nd monitor while you’re playing. Dual monitors are mentioned as a bad thing in the ET release notes.
