Nvidia 6800 and ET problems video problems, please look!

My new 6800 that I paid good money for does not play my favorite game, ET. Well, it does, but only if I do not want to play at more than 800x600, and I don’t want to alt+enter to window it (It locks up). It also locks ET when I try to change resolution, or texture quality. What gives? Is anyone else having the problem?

Card: BFG 6800GT 256MB AGP
Driver: Nvidia 6.1.7.7
Card BIOS: 5.40.02.15.02
OS: Win XP

Splash Damage gods please help!!! I love ET, but this crap a** crapper card is going back soon if someone can’t help me! I can’t live without my ET twitch

Did you properly uninstall your drivers from your previous card ?
-download driver cleaner 3
-uninstall the driver
-reboot to safe mode (F8 while booting)
-use driver cleaner and clean the files from your previous vendor
-reboot and install new drivers

Seems you’re having a problem with vid_restart. You don’t have this issue in other games when changing resolution?
If not, try deleting/moving your config (probably etmain\config.cfg), it will make a new one on restart.

also, you might want to try and get some of the newer beta drivers … i have heard bad things about the 6.1.7.7 drivers

the 66.31’s are supposed to be good

61.77 is a good reliable driver though not the fastest and lacking sm3.0 support. My suggestions are 65.76 and 66.32
You can find them here http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?id=10 , though this issue probably has nothing to do with 61.77.

Thanks for the replies. When I get home from work, I will try as you suggest. The card before was a 4200 though. I will give it a shot and report my findings. I had already uninstalled ET and reloaded in a diff directory.

Other games? What other games? I thought there was only ET???

Thanks, I never knew about Driver Cleaner, thanks for the tip! I removed my old 5.? Nvidia drivers, the ATI drivers for the 9800 that failed, and reloaded. Life is good!

The author of Driver Cleaner is getting a donation from me!

I’ve recently resolved my problems with my PNY 6800. I tried several versions of the nvidia drivers and even tweaked beta drivers from others, formatting, reinstalling, ect. My problem came down to my soundcard. For some reason I had a SB PCI512 card in my machine that WILL NOT play well with the 6800. I couldn’t determine if this was a power fault or PCI collision or driver problem but SB Live! and various other OEM cards work fine. What is odd is the only applications that crashed for me were id games (q3, q3ta, wolf, et, doom), all other games and applications run fine. As much as I’d like to try and figure out if this is a trend or an artifact, I think the problem is a little bit too big for me to tackle :frowning:

I think that I might have had some artifact drivers that caused my 9800 to fail, but that would mean that I have to take my 6800 out to test. Now that it is working well, I have a hard time doing that.
