Now that Call of Duty is out there...

Now that Call of Duty is out there, do you think we could convince Activision to release the ET code to the public? We could draft a letter or whatever was necessary, we could all sign a petition, we could play with a ouija board, I don’t know… I just think that if some more mod teams got the code, we might actually get a lot of the features we bitch and moan about on these forums so often. Food for thought?

I wonder who, apart from Bani and Shrub, would want, or could use, the ET source, and who would add features that these 2 wouldn’t? Both seem quite approachable, both seem to cater for all sectors of the gaming community in one way or another, and both seem happy to add features that there’s a genuine consensus should be added.

Also, would Activision really want to release the source code for one of their WW2 shooters if there was any danger it would harm sales of another? i.e., making ET more popular (by providing more features through mods) surely isn’t in the best interests of COD?

I just direct all moaning and bitching at Bani/Rain instead

ok and fonfon (MAKE TEH ET-TV NOW PEON!!111)

Well, the feature I was thinking of was the one that got mentioned in that thread about changing skins per-map. Ifurita mentioned that SD had been thinking about implimenting that, but never got around to it. That would be a cool feature, I think. Mappers could really create a new experience for their levels without having to screw up everybody else’s maps.

This is reason enough in itself. Right now there’s no way for them to get access to the source. Long live bani.

Wildwest, The Russian Front to name but a few… I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on the source… A whip mod to go with Hummers Indy campaign anyone?

The possibilities of Mods once the source is out are endless. Since ET is a FREE game, people will be always interested in this game.

True, but then wouldn’t that be even less reason for the source to be made public? Surely having new game types (all available free of charge) springing up left, right and centre is going to harm sales of other, similar games.

Personally I’d have probably bought COD seeing as my interest in RTCW is now about zero, but I doubt I will as, thanks to ET, I’ve already got a class WW2 FPS game.

Perhaps… But… lets not forget the Source for Quake 3 and RTCW (on which ET is based) is allready available for people who want to make those kind of mods. True that these games are not free, but a great deal of people still own the above games (and they can be bought at budget prices these days)…

So… The sales are Harmed by ET anyway?

(Fenris) #10

Hmm, personally I’d rather like to see more quality maps and maybe patches/updates for ET and shrub/etpro rather than more mods.
Just thinking back to RtCW and the variety of mods there that never took off especially much. Enough to concentrate on the ones that exist already imho

(Sauron|EFG) #11

I wonder if id/Activision have turned down any requests for the source. Everyone assumes it’s impossible to get it (under NDA) for someone who isn’t “established” as a mapper, but did anyone try?

nate.h has access to it. Rain helps bani, so he also has access.

It’s possible that they restricted the use of the source though, in order to prevent full conversions.

(Eddie1989) #12

I tried, but I received this message:
“The source code hasn’t been made public yet

(Spark) #13

As someone who spent most of the years before ET playing and creating mods, I couldn’t agree more.
I think there can only be two reasonss why they don’t give the source to everyone yet:
a) They don’t want the game to be flooded with lots of "my first super mod"s but only quality work.
b) They are afraid that the game might become TOO popular and hurt sales of other games. Maybe they don’t want TCs too happen (not sure though if any competent team has tried to get the source for a TC?).

It’s a bit sad because it could become the de facto standard modding game, but it’s ok. The only thing that has to be created somehow is ETTV (can’t stress that enough).

You hit that one right on the nail my friend, I just couldn`t bring myself to say it.

“. . . multiplayer Call of Duty features the very clever ‘kill cam’, which lets a player who’s been killed relive the last five seconds of his life from his killer’s perspective.”

Could something like this be implemented in ET, it would sure stop alot of ppl screaming “cheat” (they may even learn something)

(L2|B4tt3rY) #16

i wish they would bring out a DAM sweet patch that fixes all the new bugs and has like said here a few weeks ago loads of new OFFICIAL maps cause the costom ones IMO are kinda crappy, rhine bridge is to axis based and tempe is to much a bigass map and it tkaes to long to actually get into the temple,

(wolfpac) #17

it not free as ET so no buy, like free MP games though.

(Pegger) #18

I don’t like the kill cam, just yet perhaps. I always liked going out and finding the SOB who killed me to exact my revenge, even if he gets me three or four more times in a row trying.

On the other side of that sword, it probably elimantes a good many number of “snipers”.

(Abraxas) #19

well I think ET needs more titties. Big titties and small titties, perky titties and bouncy titties. Titties to rest your head on. Something to think about…
