Noob Question, is there a good Linux video card for around 50 bucks

(jjpron) #1

Hey all,
just rebuilt a Linux machine (Ubuntu 10.10) and am thinking about buying a video card. I have 2 kids, so 50 bucks would be about most I’d be willing to spend on one if that’s possible.
Any reccomendations?

I think what I have in right now is ATI 850
I used to play with that, and it was OK.
I see that newegg has some NVidia 6200s for $40.

TIA, go GDF!

Nvidia got better Linux drivers; I would get one of those.

It’s that you close your post with “go GDF” or I would have said this thread doesn’t belong in the gaming section at all

Anyway, buying a Nvidia 6200 now, means you got to buy a new graphics card within 3 months again.
I personally wouldn’t buy anything lower then the 200 series.
Or if you must, the 9800 GTX.

Look on craigslist or ebay for a second hand one, they go for pretty cheap nowadays.

Don’t cheap out on hardware. Double your budget to get something decent.

Not top of the bill, but I guess you’re not going for it.

Get a nvidia graphics card, they are the best graphics cards available

$50 ? Linux ? Nvidia ?
something like 7600GT/7600GS[±10% to cost ±35% to performance between].
but i strongly suggest take look at GT8800/9800/GTX250/GTX450 in case of ETQW gaming, at least.
otherwise you forced to take hard tradeoff/choice of ETQW beauty of GFX versus smooth gameplay.
sadly.

AGP or PCI-E slot would be a big factor, if AGP, nVidia 7600 is prolly best bet. iirc, ATI doesn’t offer linux drivers for it’s AGP HD cards

(Gradis) #8

6200’s were pants back then. worthless now.

(brbrbr) #9

ATi/AMD offer more tricky solutions for “AGP” cards.
and “AGP hotfix” drivers[created periodically. less frequently than mainline ones] 4 them.
but i can admit, Nvidia support their products, more solid, longer and on less discriminative basis[in all four aspects].

I can recommend the 7600GT, been using it with ETQW myself for quite some time. It’ll let you play on normal-high settings at a steady 30fps. If you want more, your game will be less pretty.

sooo ?
used 8800 cards[on G92 chips ONLY] was only option within buger w/decent performance in ETQW?
