Hey there, i was just wondering which engine is working on Brink…thank you!
Noob brink question
oh thank you,how do you feel it? what about the graphic side? is it in cel shading? this would help many machines, what do you think about? thanks.
No cel shading, that’s for sure. A little rim lightning to see far enemies, that’s all.
few XD so it has been just “stylized” or something, however is a game design choice
Hur durr, look at the videos? Screenshot? articles?
…
Seriously I’m usually nice with the forum’s newcomers but its getting madness over there, a bazzilion new thread each day about the same / old subjects over and over! I clearly sound like an asshole here but it’s getting on ma nerves!
Bye!

This is why I have a section JUST FOR “noob” questions. Because while it can be annoying for those deeply familiar with the game, there are still people coming in that want to know more about it but don’t feel they should have to sift through endless searches to try and find an answer to something when in normal, polite, face-to-face conversation it would hardly be considered so offensive to just ask.
Lol, seriously?

You do know that if there are no new people that create new threads or anything in the like, a forum will be as empty and dull as a ghost town, and that is a forum killer
We can be glad that new people are joining the BRINK forums (Splash and Bethesda) and ask their questions, it means more people are interested in the game, which is great!
There’s virtual texturing which grealy reduces the memory load of textures and allow for more varied textures throughout the environment.
hi I’m sorry for bothering you with annoying thread :\ i’ve also used “search” and look for “engine” but i didn’t find anything… i am noob so i can’t recognize the cel shading watching videos or screenshots :,I’ve just watched something from borderlands that looks familiar and then my question’s born :.
*Tokamak
Megatexture right? that thing that would create giant textures right?
*everyone
thanks and sorry :\
It’s similar to mega texture, basically all the textures (and quality for different ranges) you need for one object or part of the map are arranged into one bigger texture.
If there’s any cell-shading effects they have to be very subtle as I don’t recognise it. I think it’s rather the style of the art itself that brings such a look to the game.

You got nothing to say sorry for, pal
And since when did cell shading and fizzamabob and stuff like that make you a noob?

forum existed quite nicely before Brink, it was comfortable. The mappers and modders here worked well together, threads didn’t go anywhere near OT as they do now and console chatter related to seta and cvar. Overall the place was nicer, more polite. It seems the average age has dropped 10 years and the place is starting to resemble a kids clan site on .tk. I’m sure SD welcomes absolutely everyone to join and participate here, but for some of us the amount of childish and actually stupid behaviour (tags) is getting hard to handle, I can barely go to the Beth forums because of the total lack of comprehension and respect there. I fear for our little home

I have yet to find this ‘‘lack of respect’’, Nail, but that might be just me, and that might be just you
Just becuase someone tagged a thread with ‘‘ballsack of lead’’ and ‘‘nutty daddy issues with cream’’ doesn’t mean that the majority of people here are like this, and… Well, I think you already know this, but badman fixed it so only the thread opener can add tags
And with interesting games comes intersting people
I wouldn’t say it’s a lack of respect, it’s rather a lack of interest in dialogue. Then again, I’m a relative newbie as well.
The more, the merrier I say! Sure, there’ve been some growing pains and there’ll probably be more in the future, but, y’know, that’s what the feedback section is for.
Back on topic, there’s a lot of great information about the art style in Olivier’s developer diary: http://www.splashdamage.com/content/brink-developer-diary-2-olivier-leonardi
Easier to show than tell:
Jet Set Radio:

(the picture on the right is cel-shaded.
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker:

Borderlands:
(Modified a lot from “standard” cel shading.)
The CG Appleseed movie:

(Not the best example, but there are surprisingly few stills from the movie on Google Image. Note the shadows on Deunan (the girl).)
Not cel-shaded:

(The main difference: Outlines and shadows. And has anyone linked to The Dancing Hot Dog’s Brink preview yet?? I’m guessing no.)
It’s the hyperrealism, exaggerated details and broad strokes (like extreme folds in clothing) that give the cell-shaded vibe.
Wasn’t it coined as Hyper-realism as well? Not so much cartoony and not so much realism. They took specific facial and body features and pronounced them so as to make Brink look quite different then anything else on the market.
Edit: ninja-ed!
