No sound at all, tried every single hint of the web

Hi there,

I bought Brink via Steam yesterday.

I’m under Win 7 64 bits home premium, DX 11 OK (tested with dxdiag and dxdiag64).
SP1 installed.

Sound works anywhere else (even in games like BFBC2, TF2 and MOH, all under Steam).

I have nVidia SLI of GTS 450, 270.61 driver installed for weeks, reinstalled OK yesterday.

6 gb Ram in 3x2gb triplechannel, intel I7… classical gamer station, right?

SoundMax drivers (sound chipped on my Asus Rampage Gene II motherboard), reinstalled today.

Windows Update shows no update available.

Tried also “s_restart” in the console message given in the console is:

… initializing XAudio2
WARNING: XAudio2Create(0) failed

Game starts with “stereo” setting? Yes, verified and OK.

Tried to open the mixer with alt/tab : Brink application is not muted.

Installed Brink Config 1.5 to tweak config on audio settings: nothing changes…

I still have not even a single sound out of Brink…

But the game is wonderfull, lots of FPS here, etc…

Just no sound at all.

Strange thing: Im under W7 for 3 months now (formerly vista premium 32 bits), since I reinstalled completely my computer, now Steam tries to install DirectX again and again each time I launch a game… But the games finishes to start (at least for others FPS I have in steam : BFBC2, TF2 and MOH).

I then executed Dxsetup from some internal path of steam
(C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\brink\directx).

It fails at the end, asking me to read C:\Windows\DirectX.log

This file contains tons of messages like this one:

I can’t find any real error message in this file

Ah, and I tried also running this (and other tools) “as administrator” (DirectX install, steam, etc…) changes nothing.

So I think I really tried anything I could google for 2 days now or read in this forum (thanks all for such cool community support!).

Anyone can help there?

It appears your DirectX runtime isn’t installing correctly, and the XAudio version of the API on your system is older than what Brink requires. If you manage to get the latest DirectX redistributable to install correctly (this is what Steam keeps trying to do for you) you’ll find that your audio will work too.

So, that’s all the art of my problem, managing to have this thing install at last.

I understand now it has quite nothing to do with Brink. It’s a DirectX install problem on Win7_64…

If anyone has a clue here, I’ll be glad of any help.

It appears your DirectX runtime isn’t installing correctly, and the XAudio version of the API on your system is older than what Brink requires. If you manage to get the latest DirectX redistributable to install correctly (this is what Steam keeps trying to do for you) you’ll find that your audio will work too.

Just to highlight a few things in general:

• DX10 and DX11 in vista an win7, do not include the DX9 libraries.
• Microsoft has updated DirectX 9.0c many times (bi-monthly) without changing the version number.
• DirectX 9.0c from 2004 IS NOT the latest DirectX 9.0c
• June 2010 was the last update according to what I can find on the Microsoft website.

Games usually will bundle the DirectX version that they need, DO NOT SKIP the update thinking you already have DirectX 9.0c. As it may very well be an older release.

Couldn’t find anything, tried directx_Jun2010_redist.exe : same problem, seems to copy files, but same error at 95% done, same error messages in C:\Windows\DirectX.log … |-(

Tried also dxwebsetup.exe (seems to be more DX 9 related…), same problem, crashes exactly the same at the exact same level, same errors…

I also find I have 3 similar files in C:\Windows\System32\ about XAaudio:

XAudio2_0.dll of 5 march 2008
but (in properties) : created TODAY 1h ago ???

Tried again and again this morning, nothing changes. Still a problem at DirectX’s install when launching the game from Steam. Still no sound at all in brink.

Hopefully he’ll rant about is errors, files or such, as we can dig into the problem and, hopefully, find a solution to it ??

To me it seems really related to DirectX issues under W7 64b. But I’m not a specialist, it’s just a personal feeling…

Update: I tried to start W7/64 bits in “no error mode” : I just powered off violently to have windows asking for it.
This way, few drivers installed in memory, avoiding conflicts or such.

I installed DirectX, this time, successfully (the one in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\brink\directx) !!!

I tought the problem solved.

I rebooted, started brink, and… still the same behaviour… It tries uncessfully to install directx again and again, with the exact same errors… I really don’t understand

If that is the driver you already installed, I doubt it would do any good. But if you installed a copy you had previously downloaded and stored somewhere, it may be worth trying in case there was just some file corruption or something.

Something’s certainly weird about your DirectX install errors though. Already having files installed by itself shouldn’t produce a “failure”. It’s strange that you don’t seem to be producing an error log when the install fails.

Hey dude its me! Haha, yep, i still got this problem. Its so annoying, i have litterally done the exact same things as you and get the exact same problems, Brink runs perfectly fine on high settings, (anywhere between 50-120 fps in game) but still no sound!
The game is so dull without sound -.- it ruins the experience.
Lets keep trying and ranting on forums to try and get a solution eh? Haha.
Also, i have heard that W7 64bit has some compatibility issues with dx11 or something haha. But yer thanks man.

If its DX11 related, nothing to do with Brink. It’s just that this game may use DX11 differently than other games I run perfectly (as said: BFBC2, TF2, COD4, MOH, etc…).

Maybe it uses some “edge” functionalities of DX11 yet unsupported on 64 bits version?? Sounds really weird to me.

Note that for all other games that works (see above), Steam STILLS tries to re-install DX… It fails there too, but the game runs perfeclty after that.

Maybe its also Steam 64 bits related, then… After all, it worths asking steam about that. I will.
