No Servers Show Up in Win 7

(Jimmy James) #1

I just upgraded to a new system. (First time using Win 7.)

My wife and I are connected to a router and we can both see the internet just fine. My old system, and her current system, use Win XP but my new system has Win 7 and even though I can browse the internet just fine I can’t bring up any Brink servers when I do a search in-game.

My wife can do a search and get a big list of servers, and if she joins one I can use the search for friends option to see the server she is on and join it. However, neither the search internet nor the lan options produce any results.

Is there some setting in Win 7 that will allow me to search for Brink servers? It seems strange that I can search for friends and it works fine but not for individual servers.

Thanks,
JJ

firewall?

i use zonealarm and brink doesnt minimise to show that i need to allow it. every time i do an update i have to re allow brink.exe

sorry, missed the last bit.

i often have to delete the min players filter to see servers. then i re add it back in.

Just in case youy haven’t found a soloution to your troubles yet.
I have not yet had to port forward, but remembered seeing this article and bookmarking it.

hi JJ,

I had the same problem. since today it suprisingly works again. I could bypass the problem with choosing “history” instead of “internet” as search option.

hope this could help. GL

Thanks for the advice!

It’s not a problem with port forwarding as I have forwarded the following ports to my router/firewall: 27015, 27016, & 8766

To clarify, both my wife and I had computers running Win XP connected to the same router. We could both see Brink servers just fine. This weekend I built a new computer running Win 7 and now no servers come up when I search for them but my wife can still see servers on her Win XP computer. If she joins a server I can search for friends and see the server she is on.

So, to me at least, it appears to be a problem with my computer instead of a router issue. Still having the problem. The current solution is to start up my wife’s computer, join a server with her character then log in with mine on my computer. It works but…

More info:

Still can’t see any servers when using the “Internet” option. But when I search “History” it turns up 17 servers, and when I try my wife’s computer to search “Internet” it shows 330 servers. Connected through the same router. Not sure what’s going on.

Any suggestions appreciated,
JJ

Windows 7 firewall needs to be open for brink.exe and steam.exe

Port forwarding should include
Steam TCP: 27014-27050 UDP: 1200, 4380, 27000-27030

Cool. Uh, how do I do that exactly?

Ugh, I hate being a PC tech that’s never used an OS since XP!

Thanks,

  1. Right-click on your network icon and open Network Sharing Center
  2. Click on Windows Firewall in the lower left corner
  3. Click Allow a Program or feature through Windows Firewall in the top left

Normally, you should get some kind of pop-up asking you if you want to do this when you first install an application or it first attempts to access the net, so you shouldn’t have to manually open this stuff very often.

OK, so I got to this window and I see that both the Brink and Steam apps are checked on the left and they both have “Public” checked on the right side but not “Home/Work (Private)”. What do I do now?

Thanks,

Hi, are you sure you haven’t filtered them out by accident? Try the “clear all” button in browser, also check the number at the bottom of the browser list - it should show fex 34/192 (matched/total number of servers)

I’m on win7 and it should work fine.

btw, as an alternative you can try using the steam browser, you find it under the “servers” menu in steam.

I tried the Clear All button but it didn’t help (the filters were all default already). At the bottom left corner it says “No Servers” where it would usually display the matched/total number.

When I try to use the Steam browser to search for servers nothing happens, it just sits there with “refreshing server list…” in the bottom left corner.

It’s all very odd because I just used my wife’s computer to find a game to join (joined with her computer then used the search for friends option in Brink to join with mine) and I played for a couple hours with no problems. Can’t understand why I can’t actually view any servers myself.

Check Home/Work. The settings you describe mean that Brink & Steam are actually BLOCKED when you are connected to a network identified as Home or Work, but allowed when you are connected to a network you identify at “Public”.

Windows will ask you what kind of network it is each time you connect to a new one. Generally you want most things to be unchecked on the Public side but checked on the Home/Work side where you know you are mostly safe.

Checked “Home/Work (Private)” for both Brink and Steam, didn’t fix the problem.

install zonealarm  much better than windows firewall

(jfunk) #16

Odd. You certain you have no other software installed, like some kind of security suite, that may be interfering?

I would start with troubleshooting your Steam server browser. I doubt you’ll see any change in the in game server browser while that “permanent refresh” behavior is ongoing.

Before digging too deep, try the basic stuff here to reset your Steam browser: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5539-MJWZ-7760

I just built this computer this weekend. Only things installed are Windows 7 (all updates) and Brink/Steam. Been too busy playing Brink to install anything else. However, I am completely unfamiliar with whatever software firewall/internet security Windows 7 has.

OK, I’m beginning to think this is more of a Steam problem than a Brink problem.

Started Brink, still can’t see any servers when I search using the Internet option but I can see the 3 servers I played on yesterday in History.

Now, in Steam, I searched my History and 18 servers came up, then searching for game servers a huge list (100+) came up, but only 3 were Brink servers. I then went back to the History tab in Steam and though it showed the number 18 at the top it didn’t display any servers but instead said “No servers match your filters.” or something similar. So I went back to Internet and got the same “No Servers” message.

I just checked again a minute later and 21 servers (all Brink) just showed up in History and 131 in internet but only 4 Brink servers.

Ugh, inconsistent behavior is the worst to troubleshoot! I think I’ll have to get some help from the Steam forums.

Thanks for all the help,
JJ

Just for the heck of it, go into your network adapter properties and disable (uncheck) IPV6. Restart after doing this and try again.

Edit: You could also try completely disabling the Windows Firewall temporarily just to test, but considering this a fresh install I highly doubt that will change anything as long as you have Brink & Steam added as exceptions.

(Jimmy James) #19

First, let me thank everyone for their continuing support.

OK, I gave this a try and it didn’t make any difference that I could detect. Could still see the internet just fine, still can’t see any servers in Brink, Steam behaves the same way.

The link to the Steam site suggests renaming serverbrowser.vdf and ClientRegistry.blob then letting Steam recreate these files, but if it’s on a fresh install this shouldn’t be an issue right?

Update:

I discovered the “Change Filters” button at the bottom left corner of the Steam client and when I set it to search only for Brink I got 321 servers! A lot of them time out but I can join some. May have something to do with certain servers not being updated with the newest patch?

Still can’t see any servers in-game but this at least gives me a workaround and once I join them they are on my in-game History list.
