I was actually looking forward to spending the hours waiting for the teams to show up, and half the game trying to synch shoutcast with WTV. :frowning:

So QuakeCon are going to flog a dead horse (Quake) and major on a game that isn’t even out yet (DOOM3). No wonder several QCon organisors have walked out recently.

QCon 2004 = disaster IMO.

Sorry, just had to argue the point that Q3 isnt dead, and is still the best 1v1 tourney game out :stuck_out_tongue:

Bbut yes it very much sucks that there’s no RTCW/ET. I think cos Doom’s taken to so long as is just about to be released, they’re trying to build as much hype for it as possible… which saddly means the lesser played game gets kicked to the side.

Probably, but it’s hardly “this year’s hot game” is it? I can only assume the same about DOOM3, they’re using QCon to launch it, effectively. What a waste of a good tourney, and where does that leave top level ET?

Agree its mostly due to D3 though. I think they will want to attract the Q3 duellers to D3, and probably think Q3 community more likely to react more strongly towards not being included at Qcon. I think they’re shooting themselves in the foot, just shows theyre willing to dump communities, this is a second major dump on wolf.

idiocy knows no bounds…does seem highly commercially motivated. I gotta gree with Kendle in that it is stupid to use QCon as a launch pad for Doom 3. Yeah fair enough promote doom 3, but htf can it be one of the very few limited prize tourneys when there are not even any clans?%?•Ã?jF ‘A level playing field’ my arse. It’s a sell out.

The decision to major on DOOM3 isn’t such a surprise, but the 32 team Q3CTF tourney is. According to US news sites and forums there simply aren’t enough Q3CTF teams in the World (let alone the US) to fill those slots. They’re hosting a Q3 1v1 tourney, thereby keeping the “Quake” in “QuakeCon”, so why not ET or RTCW instead of Q3CTF? It’s a far, far, far, more popular game.

I can only assume the whole thing is geared to one end and one end only, which is to sell copies of DOOM3, and the organisers have taken the view that RTCW/ET players are less likely to be interested in a DM type game like DOOM3 than Q3 players. Plus, the tourney is sponsored by nVidia, who obviously want to sell their latest cards, and DOOM3 sounds like it’s gonna need them, whereas RTCW/ET doesn’t.

Bottom line is it’s a commercial sell-out, and I think ID/Activision may have shot themselves in the foot as a result.
