No more (gameplay) patches ?

(Borsuk) #1

Hi.

I know that

a) releasing such a game for free is kinda unusual
b) Splash Damage is going to co-develop DooM3 multiplayer levels

but there’s number of gameplay and bug issues that need attention.

There are

  • nasty bugs
  • gameplay issues (xp system should reward more for being useful for team; class balance to some extent, no xp whoring should be possible)

And yes, ET has BIG player base, more that UT2003 and second place after Counterstrike. I mean, it is of big importance.

http://gamespy.com/stats

Does anybody know (preferably from SD team, but I guess they don’t care) if there are any official patches to be released, or it all depends on silly mods like shrub etc ?

Because I think there aren’t going to be ANY official patches. When the team made Quake 3 Fortress and started working on ET, it almost completely stopped them from releasing q3f updates.

I think DooM3 is much more important for SD than ET was (guess why?), so I suppose they aren’t going to release ANY Enemy Territory patches anymore.

How do you think ?

sad but true!!! :frowning:

I don’t think there will be any patches, and I don’t think SD will confirm this one way or the other, and I don’t think it’s got anything to do with them not caring either.

The game “belongs” to ID/Activision, not SD. SD merely developed it for them, so it’s not SD’s decision to make as to what happens to ET in the future. Plus, it’s FREE and there’s no money to be made patching it, so what would be the business case for doing so?

As for bugs and game-play issues, Shrub and Bani have already taken care of a number of these. Their mods are not “silly”. Both are producing mods specifically for competition, neither of which will necessarily have all the “silly” stuff that their respective RTCW mods had. And all the options they do add are almost allways OFF by default, with the onus on the Server Admin to switch them ON if he so desires.

I’m more than happy to see people like Bani, specifically, who listens to gamers and actively encourages their feedback, be in charge of fixing and enhancing the game.

As everyone keeps saying “I don’t think there will be a patch”, this gets the pressure off SD to release one, so PLZ STOP !!! :bump:

I think there should be a patch, dealing with all the bugs related to netcode, server browser, demo replay etc. Then they can leave the gameplay fixes to the modders. But maybe include the most important gameplay changes that already are fixed by bani and shrub as well.

Come on SD, release the patch AND WE WILL LOVE U FOR IT :rocker2:

SD owes us nothing. If anything, we owe them. They developed a great game, and we didn’t have to pay any money for it.

Shrub/Bani have pretty much taken it upon themselves to patch bugs in the game in ET_SHRUB and ET_TourneyMod from Shrub and ETPro and (soon) BayonET from Bani.

If you don’t like the “silly” features of mods, then choose to play on servers running one of the competition mods…

I don’t know how many times this topic has come up…

If somebody gave you a brand new computer for free, would you complain if they didn’t offer to give you a free warranty?

What if somebody else who was trained on your computer, but not the manufacturer, offered you free warranty… Would you still complain?

We should be grateful to SD for developing this wicked game, grateful to ID/Activision for releasing it for free, grateful to Shrub and Bani for offering to patch it for free, and we should keep our mouths shut and our bellies warm if we know what’s good for us.

Perhaps people fail to realize the value of what they have just been given.

If you want to see something changed, jump over to Shrub or Bani’s website and let them know what you would like to see altered.

There shouldn’t be any ‘pressure’ on SD to release a patch… We should be sending them and ID/Activision boatloads of beer/food/money in appreciation of what we’ve been given.

Playing on Shrub mod servers have a variety of bugs that have been fixed.

The thing I don’t like about such mods is that they offer TOO MUCH freedom to server admins, and their features aren’t always well-thought. For instance flak jacket crossing over is dumb. Medic with flak jacket is very resistant to mines, panzerfaust, grenades… normally one of best ways to kill a medic.

When you join vanilla server, you know what can you expect. When you join mod server, you may find yourself unable to use heavy weapons because the admin thinks (“flamethrower is lame and requires no skill, all weapons except smgs are lame and require no skill”). Ok, I think it can be accomplished without a mod, but you should understand my point.

Joining a server and spending some seconds on reading game settings isn’t that fun. I think there should be several rulesets for mod, and it should be displayed with BIG FAT LETTERS if server setting is non-standard.

Give Splash Damage time, right now they’re working on RTCW2, Quake 4 and Doom 3. Once they get these games perfected, the fixes and improvements to those games will filter down to Enemy Territory. And being that the game was free , Activision/ID prolly only requires them to work on ET on their spare time. There is an enormous push right now to get RTCW2, Quake 4 and Doom 3 ready before the Christmas season.

(DG) #9

really? where you getting this information from? i thought id were working on D3 and SD only codeveloping the maps for it. and Raven are making Q4. and nobody is making RTCW2 - unless you count Call of Duty which is based on redone rtcw engine but not being marketed at all as a wolf game, and is anyway being made by Infinity Ward/Spark.

IIRC/AFAIK etc.

I cant believe that this as been made possible, one of the worst ideas yet.

A medic with a flak jacket who can spot mines for xp and has enemy recognition and can inject himself with adrenaline…

vs.

anyone else…

(Emon) #12

I don’t see why them having those abilities is bad. They earned them, they should be able to use them.

Oh, and, headshots are key.

just gimma a medic with dual panzerfaust and a flag jacket, :drink:

First, I would like to say that I would have rathered they put it out in a box and make you pay aprox. 45 dollars. That way we could ateast expect some patches. Second, it’s not my fault they decided to give it out free. Shit, I payed full price, now I expect a patch. Third, isn’t it interesting how two of the top ten games are completely free?

(Riftgarde) #15

The admins also have the freedom not to give us servers to play on.

(Pirate_X) #16

Maybe on a 10 map server… In that case, EVERYBODY would have that.

(Kamel) #17

i agree 110%! i can’t help it that they released it for free, but then again, as someone else said earlier, they aren’t making money for patches. so this means that they made money from making patches to games which people paid for? – they dont buy the game for the patches, everyone knows this. if the game had cost money, it wouldn’t have nearly as many cdkey issues either, and banning people would be 10x easier and better.

splash damage doesn’t owe us a thing, but i know i sure as hell am going to ask for it. i’m not going to “require” splash damage to do shit, and even if i tried that, they could (and would) just say no. they are mature people, they know what’s best for them, lol.

enemy territory might not put food on the table, but a thought to make a major update to the game, and make it cost money would be kick ass IMO. i would soo friggen buy the game. and hell, if they decide to spend the time to make single player missions and shit, this could just be an extended demo. i don’t care what or how they do it, but as i’m sure everyone else would agree, i want atleast one patch of the game. patches like shrub mod are not going to be able to fix every issue… they are server side only, and many of the bugs we experiance are client side. there really isn’t anything shrub can or wil do about it. i’m glad they are generous enough to do this, but you dont have to act like we owe shrub or anyone else something, they volunteered to do this shit, and if they want something in return ever, then they really weren’t volunteering in the first place and are being hippocritical.

let the flames begin :cool:
