Cewl, nah, just that I think it said with the documentation that you won’t be able to join any non patched servers once you install the patch, if it’s not there, it’s at least in many problems posted here within the past few days.
You could have two installs, one with the patch and one without if you wanted to visit both types of server.
Or, you could look at patch selector that some people have suggested, I haven’t looked at it yet… should really give it a try at some point.

this may sound dumb, but I have had similar experiences to what you describe with an assortment of programs, and after lots of head against wall banging, the problem turned out to be a conflict with my audigy sound card, even though the system doesn’t report a conflict.
as a quick check, rip the sound card out, and try e.t. again.
if this helps, have a look at the creative web site for further information on resolving conflicts with their audigy cards.
