No lobbies, what were you thinking?

Splash Damage arent new to the competitive scene. What would make you guys think they dont have a system implemented for tournaments and such? Cant believe how you are all whining about something that is probably in there, but you still havent seen yet. Unbelievable.
I know exactly what they are talking about. I didn’t know they didn’t include a way for guys to gather up the teams before the map starts. That sucks major balls for the competitive side of consoles.

I’m wondering though, splashdamage had a tournament on XBOX360 at their offices a few days ago… I wonder how they dealt with this issue then … I hope maybe there’s a way they haven’t made more clear.
It depends on how serious it was. They might have just started a game and sent invites to everyone and played the match without it being a fair start. There could be some decent way of starting privates but since I don’t have the game I’m not entirely sure.

I’ve been lurking the forums for a long time and I had yet to see an issue that made me feel like I needed make an account until now.

Lobbies don’t always make sense for PC games because the games are played on servers with admins who can restart the match once all the players are in the game but console players often don’t have that luxury.

I can’t think of a successful multiplayer console game that didn’t have lobbies. If I have 7 friends and we all want to hop into a game on xbox live together, how are we going to manage that? Yes there’s live party chat but is there an option to make a private match public once your friends are in the game?

Changing match settings in the hopes of finding an empty game doesn’t sound reasonable at all. What if the match settings I want are popular? Am I forced to choose between funky matches with all my friends or fun matches with maybe 3 or 4 of them?

I know there are a lot of PC gamers out there that don’t believe there’s a competitive scene on consoles but they’re wrong. It may not be as big a scene as PC but there is one. Considering that SD wanted this to be a competitive multiplayer game, this has to be the most backwards system for setting up clan matches. Are we forced to sit through a game trying to get all the players in the match? Are there options for kicking players if there isn’t enough room for a friend to join your team?

A lot of these questions won’t be answered until tomorrow but if it’s too complicated to play with my friends then I’ll probably be returning the game soon.

I just hope that SD has something implemented that we don’t know about that makes it easy to set up a game with your friends.

No lobbies or Halo/CoD/GoW party matchmaking??? oh dear, oh dear me… Thats not cool on consoles, in fact thats so uncool its not true. Thats the one key thing that makes games on console work…

(u4X) #25

Gamebattles.com was planning on releasing a ladder on consoles for this game tonight. However, consoles lack some of the key functionalities of PCs, so a lobby system is required in order to gather members before a match, select appropriate teams, then start the match for everyone at the same time.

If Splash Damage overlooked this lobby system that is necessary for competition on the consoles, I would hope that a patch could be implemented that would allow players to create a lobby for a private match, choose the map being played, and allow each individual player to choose either Resistance or Security before the game starts, then allow the lobby leader to start the game.

If you’re playing comp, then make a private match and invite. I haven’t seen the exact options, but if you go into the main menu, under “Free Play” are two options: Public, and Private. Every video I’ve ever seen that showed either has shown Public, none have shown Private. You’d just set it so that it’s only visible to invite only, just like you would with any other game, and there you have it.

(Herandar) #27

They aren’t important for casual community. The console’s built-in party system and private matches shouild absolutely be sufficient to set up games.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 doesn’t have any lobbies and it totally bombed.

Ahh, right. But you’ve already cast your stones at the developer, haven’t you?

(Nayr) #28

Yes but if you select private it will take you into a game instantly, since there are no lobbies. Unless there’s an alternative method that they’ve been hiding from us.

(u4X) #29

The problem with that is the player who starts the private match loads the map earlier than everyone else who joins later, giving the first player an unfair advantage as he is able to rush towards the enemy base.

(Linsolv) #30

No, first it takes you into a menu where you set it all up. Then, MAYBE it takes you into a game instantly, but nobody’s spoken to me about what happens then. Wedgewood was clearly (based on his wording) referring to the Public option, which I don’t really know why he would do that.

BC2 is absolutely horrid. Never seen anyone play it competitively. I also don’t know how it’s private match system or matchmaking works. If I remember correctly in the demo it was retarded and you could only talk to like 3 other people in your squad and had to join a session in progress.

I could be wrong though, BC1 and BC2 were awful so I haven’t paid any attention to them in a long time.

(Nayr) #32

“Set it all up” aka pick map and settings then start without first getting your teams settled or your friends in there with you.

(elevator13) #33
Congrats on being an idiot!

How about people who actually are playing seriously and need to be able to start each team at the exact same moment so no unfair advantage is given to either side?

This is like Call of Duty on consoles for last couple years all over again(obviously not referring to BOPS which fixed the LAN/private match play).
Someone doesn’t know about the 1-minute warmup period when the host first joins, allowing other players to connect before the real thing starts. Derp.

Ignorance is your main defence, huh?

Just need a party system that is all.

You could set up a sqaud which consisted of 4 people for me wasnt a problem as only really have 4 people I play online with consistantly. and after Sqaud was set you could search into a game

(Aristotle) #37

Is there not going to be a warmup period before the actual match starts? Or is there a “ready-up” option that a certain percentage of the players have to do before the match starts?

Like in ETQW, the match doesn’t start until a certain percentage tell the server they’re ready, then it enters a 30 second “warm-up” mode before the game actually starts.

Surely with both games coming from SD I would think they would have something similar in place, though I could be wrong.

(Linsolv) #38

Who knows? Apparently not you. Not me either. So let’s both stop arguing. Because you’re looking like a child and I’m looking like someone who argues with children.

*defense

Quit being a fanboy and actually address anything I’m saying rather then nitpicking random quotes from my entire post.

(Nayr) #40

Um, I was not arguing with you.

I was just telling you that it doesn’t go straight into the game when you select private matches, but it probably doesn’t give you time to invite friends and make teams considering they need a lobby to do so.
