No lobbies, what were you thinking?

(Nayr) #1

Not only are lobbies important for the casual community to search matchmaking with their friends but lobbies are essential for the competitive community so we can decide teams and get everyone from both teams in the lobby before the game starts.

This should be one of the most OBVIOUS features a game developer would include in their game, especially one that boasts about catering to the competitive community.

Better start working on that patch because this game will bomb without these features.

Even if you fix the terrible lag that seems to be plauging the game right now we have to deal with this awkward way of playing with or friends in public matches and this, what looks to be a broken private match system.

Splash Damage = Derp :penguin:

As a PC gamer I have no idea how your lobby system works, but aren’t there like ways to communicate with other people through the respective network of each platform?

I have never needed lobbies as a PC gamer, why do they matter so much for consoles?

(Bridger) #3

Owning your own server > Lobbies. That’s why the competitive community uses this model. What are you talking about?

Edit: Oh! Console competitive players? Those exist? Seems like an oxymoron to me. Anybody who is actually dedicated to FPSs to the degree to call themselves competitive would own a PC yeah?

(elevator13) #4

Set up private match. Invite people. Derp.

Aight, no console-hate, please, Bridger :l

Anyways… No lobby rooms means it will be hard to get 7 of your buds and yourself into an online match facing other players

So… Yeah, what’s with this, Splash? :o

(pii_smith) #6

All these questions from the console community also puzzle me.
What happens if there is no PSN?
No lobbies, what were you thinking?
My answer to this is: The world would be a better place!

(Nayr) #7

Congrats on being an idiot!

How about people who actually are playing seriously and need to be able to start each team at the exact same moment so no unfair advantage is given to either side?

This is like Call of Duty on consoles for last couple years all over again(obviously not referring to BOPS which fixed the LAN/private match play).

(Coin Op) #8

This doesn’t sound good. What system do they have in place of lobbies? Surely you can invite friends to play some how.

Yet again, what the flying ****

Anyways…

No PSN = No online for PS3 players
No lobbies = Hard to get 7 of your buds into the same game as you facing other players

We don’t have servers to choose from, we get tossed into a lobby (match about to start) or a match that’s already started if the game supports drop-in/drop-out

(Nayr) #11

From what I can tell the only way to play with friends seems to be starting up a match and then inviting friends as the match is going on to replace the bots. The problem with this is we don’t know if the match can convert to public match where random people will connect but also it isn’t fair for private matches or for people in publics. All matches will be random people vs teams of however many you want of your friends.

And for those in privates it seems impossible to start each team at the same moment without first getting everyone in the game and then letting the first map finish.

Really a pain in the ass.

Quoted from Paul Wedgewood, May 9th 2011

Brink doesn’t have multiplayer lobbies in the traditional sense – you can jump directly into your buddies’ matches using the friends list. If none of your friends are online – don’t worry. Brink will first check if there’s a match already going that matches your parameters. If there is, you can hop right into the action. If not, it’ll start a new match with AI filling out the rest of the players until human players join in and replace them seamlessly. For us, it was really all about getting you into the match of your choice as quickly as possible and minimizing the time you spend waiting around.

Just do that, invite friends, done.

(Norb) #13

I thought the idea was to go from single player to co-op to mutiplayer without the need for lobbies

So without lobbies is it not possible to invite your freinds to a co-op game type then the host links you all into a multiplayer

I dont have the game yet so dont scream at me if thats wrong etc

Hmm, that would be a pain in the ass. I wonder if the game will play out until the other team gets a few players in the matches then it auto restarts.

I know some games have like a warm up match, like how Section 8 is now.

That doesn’t really address anything, that still only seems to work by yourself. You can’t get a group of 8 people and search into 8v8 playlist and find matches. The way he says it one person would need to get in a match and send invites to his friends and pray that there’s space and that they end up on his team.

It’s completely backwards to how it should be.

Look at any major shooter and they have a party system to search into ranked.

Halo does it the best, but COD, Gears of War, Red Faction: Guerilla, Bioshock 2, Monday Night Combat, Shadowrun, etc all have lobbies to get your friends and then search. There’s a reason this is done, it’s because it works the best!

Not to mention this messes up any chance of this game being taken seriously on consoles on sites like Gamebattles or for organizations like MLG.

I know the elitist pc players out there are snickering behind your pretentious monitors at the thought of anyone taking console games seriously but people do, so get over it.

Next time Splash Damage do some research before you try to make a multiplatform game.

(Droid) #16

For PC guys, you really have no idea what you’re talking about. What we console gamers want is something that has been a staple for AAA title games since 2004 with Halo 2. It’s 2011, we should not have to ask for lobbies like those found in private matches for Halo or Call of Duty, or hell, even Shadowrun. Being able to organize teams as the players see fit, select the map and game type, and start it at the lobby leader’s expense is not asking for much. Hell, it should be a requirement for FPS games now a days. The problem with joining servers like that of PC games is that it is far more difficult to have actual gaming teams get set up than it should be. I am almost to the point of not picking up this game since I found this out, it’s ridiculous.

there are competitive console players no need to make yourself look like a tool

(At the Gates) #18

Brink competitive tournaments are already being set up. Splash Damage come from a competitive scene and they know what they are doing. I actually couldnt care less since us PC users live quite happily without a lobby system.

(Linsolv) #19

Have we actually seen any footage of the Private Freeplay settings?

Maybe we did and I missed it.

(dommafia) #20

I know exactly what they are talking about. I didn’t know they didn’t include a way for guys to gather up the teams before the map starts. That sucks major balls for the competitive side of consoles.

I’m wondering though, splashdamage had a tournament on XBOX360 at their offices a few days ago… I wonder how they dealt with this issue then … I hope maybe there’s a way they haven’t made more clear.
