No filtered words in in-game chat?

(carnelianHumdinger) #1

I was wondering why in-game chat doesn’t have filtered words? Like why people can type the N-word in it.

I’m sure that they will implement such a feature soon, but right now they are likely focused on the core gameplay and fixing bugs and other issues that have much higher priority. This could potentially become a problem later on down the road, but for now it is not very high on the devs to-do list

(Ghosthree3) #3

You must be the first person in the world to actually want this.

The whole thing is stupid anyway, you can easily figure out what people were saying to begin with making the filter pointless. What really amuses and irritates me at the same time is when people manually half censor their words like they don’t really want to say what they’re saying but they do.

(RuleofBooKz) #4

Any censorship is bad and should only exist as an “opt-in” setting. For example so parents can enable it for children.

If this is or is not a game for children is another topic

same should apply for forums but, as we all know, forums definitely are not a place for children

(Ghosthree3) #5

There’s swearing in all the dialogue in the game, therefore the words themselves should not be censored.

If we could censor context that would be a different story. But we can’t, and we never will.

(ChinChill) #6

To be honest I would appreciate a censor on certain words. Some words are used to target a specific demographic and it can really be disheartening to see such language thrown around so casually when it can be harmful. There’s a difference between swearing at someone and calling them a ‘faggot’ (as an example). And there’s a big difference between a series of asterisks and seeing the word itself.

(Ghosthree3) #7

Uh…if you say so.

(ChinChill) #8

@Ghosthree3 A series of asterisks could be anything. I mean, the word I used as an example was blocked by a forum filter, so it’d be a bit strange to allow such language in-game when it’s not acceptable here.

(Ghosthree3) #9

If you can’t figure out what a series of asterisks is based on context - or at least get very close - you may have a mental disability. Not calling names or trying to abuse you, but it rings a bell as being a symptom of something, possibly autism - specifically Asperger’s. But I really cannot remember.

Write any sentence and a contextual censored swear within it and 99% of the people on this forum will be able to tell you what it is.

Forum filter probably should be disabled as it contradicts the game and the game’s audience. But it’s using Vanilla Forums so it’s on by default.

so @ChinChill my N word what did u think of the Louis CK vid you big F word C word? ITs pretty clever observational humor dont you think? You like CNN?

(ChinChill) #11

@Ghosthree3 As in, it could be any insult. Don’t worry, I wasn’t explaining myself clearly!

Certain words, as I said, have very strong connotations unlike basic swearing at people. I’m fine with swearing and bad language in general. I just think certain slurs, aimed towards minority groups, should be blocked. i.e. the big f word we all know and love, sure whatever. The f word often used towards gay people, no thank you.

Speaking personally it does make me uncomfortable to see/hear them used due to my own history. I know people will tell me to grow up and face it, but it shouldn’t be such a big deal to not be able to use certain harmful words towards other players during a game.

In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have chat filters.

That’s not because I hate the idea, incidentally (although I do). That’s because in an ideal world, we wouldn’t need them. They’re an imperfect tool that can’t distinguish between a bit of salty-but-well-meaning language and a torrent of verbal abuse. The theoretical best solution is if we had sufficient tools and inclination to prune the community’s worst offenders until they either reform or go elsewhere.

But we don’t currently have those tools available to us, which brings us back to chat filters. Personally, I find it entirely ridiculous that we live in a society that gets offended by words. Words are not offensive, intentions are. You can use some of the most widely filtered words in the English language in a way that is almost sweet, if you choose. If you want to censor the chat functions of this game I’m not opposed in theory, but I will be seriously peeved if it isn’t at least made as a choice in the UI. I don’t want to see anything coming in as mandatory and I will most assuredly find it utterly absurd if a game with casual swearing in the voiceovers starts to filter those same words in the in-game chat.

(Ghosthree3) #13

I agree entirely. And even in the context where words are meant to offend I find it silly that people actually are. Just ignore it. You have a choice, you can either choose to get offended and infuriated by someone being a dick or you can just completely ignore the behaviour. Admittedly this would be easier with a text mute option.

(CCP115) #14

I used to use the words gay and faggot all the time in a friendly way, with my friends. Then gay marriage got legalised, and now people look at me in a different way when I use those words.

Now I have to use different swearwords, but it’s so hard to break the habit. Damn it gay marriage, why u do dis ;-;
Total joke, I am not against gay marriage, this is a joke. I REPEAT, A JOKE.
As for OP, a chat filter would be eh. They generally don’t work. Can’t say the N-word? Say the N-word plural form. How2hackfilter

@ChinChill
Hi, what word do you speak about?
Personnaly, i don’t see any issue… It’s easy to counter it like s.h.i.t g.a.y

(ChinChill) #16

@peridotLava I was thinking of f.aggot specifically. As I said, I’m fine with most swears and I know it’s not my right to ask people to stop using a swear just because I wouldn’t want to use it. I’m only talking about censoring words that are only used as harsh insults towards others, with ties towards marginalized/a specific group of people.

(misspo) #17

@ChinChill
The thing is it would be a lots of work for nothing because it’s very, very easy to counter a filter… Impossible to counter. Just ignore people saying things like this in a mean way.
You can take screenshots and give them to nexon (if it don’t go to the shredder first).

I find it reidculous and sad that society’s solution to racism and bullying are to just ignore it. That’s why sexual abuse goes unreported, that’s why playground bullies can ruin or end a person’s life. It’s a justification. People shouldn’t have to deal with ethnic slurs, women shouldn’t have to deal with being groped, kids shouldn’t have to ignore being verbally and physically abused.

@peridotLava
@Ghosthree3
Sure people could get around a filter for the N-word, but it doesn’t mean you can’t try. Doors can be lockpicked, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t lock them.

You may say it’s just a game, but people see others say the N-word and then they think its alright to use it in society too.

@Ghosthree3
Cursing in the game:

 1. sure there’s cursing in the game, but are there racial slurs
 2. Might as well have phantom call fletcher the N-word if its ok to say in chat
 3. Let’s have skyhammer make “cat-calls” at proxy

@RuleofBooKz
Regarding Louis C.K.:

 1. if he has ever been called the N-word what meaning would it have to him, off course he could shrug it off
 2. It’s just as easy to not use those words

Freedom of speech:

 1. your rights end where another persons’ begin
 2. you can lie and yell fire in a crowded movie theater, causing a panic, but you are going to jail for that little boy that got trampled, not the people that did the trampling

(Yes) #20

What does freedom of speech have to do with anything?
