No CD key

(CreepingDeath) #1

I recently picked up Brink from GAME.co.uk only to find out that when it arrived there was no cd key in the packaging at all. I tried to contact GAME about this but they basically said it wasn’t their responsibility and to contact the publisher. I’ve filled in the contact form on Bethesda’s website twice now, made a thread in their support forums, contacted admins both here and at the Bethesda forum and Splash Damage through the info@splashdamage.com email and haven’t received a single response or even acknowledgement of my problem.

So my question to the folks here is… what else can I try? Or am I just screwed and stuck with what is essentially a useless lump of plastic?

Even with the CD key it is just a useless lump of plastic.

Can anyone who bought a store copy confirm where the CD key is? I thought it was always on the back of the manual.

(CreepingDeath) #4

From what I’ve picked up looking at other threads it seems to be a sticker that is either on the back of the manual or inside the case. I’ve heard of a few people that have had blank stickers on their manual… I don’t even have sticky residue that might imply a sticker was removed :stuck_out_tongue:

(Codine) #5

Sticker right under the disk for North America.

Not sure if Europe is any different, hope this helps.

(to_few) #6

Yep its on the case inside, near the dvd rom itself.

Key is printed like so --*****
Edit:
what codine did

Well, as you can see there is very clearly no cd key in my case

Don’t let Game lie to you, it IS their responsibility not the publisher.

I suggest you Google the Sales of Goods Act and contact Trading Standards so that they can advise you on what to do.

First, you’ll need to send a letter to Game Head-office stating your problem and what you want them to do. When you get a reply, get in touch with who you spoke with at Trading standards and they will tell you what to do next. It’s not a quick process unfortunately mate.

The letter you get back from Game will basically tell you to f**k off but if your persistent, they’ll give in eventually.

EDIT: 08454 040506 (Consumer Direct for consumer advice) - There you go

As Lozmuir said, it’s Game’s responsibility. Your contract is with them regardless of what nonsense they try to tell you.

Ask for a replacement (if that’s what you want). Failing that, go the route Lozmuir suggests.

Ask for refund. Its their responsibility.

(raztaz) #11

or just return ur copy n tell them its not working so they can give u a new copy

(Crytiqal) #12

gamestores here have a policy where you have to return the item within 24 hours, but if the game requires a code (which ANY game does as far as I know) they won’t take it back.

I wonder how that would work out in this situation :>

At least where I live, shops are ultimately responsible for the stuff they are selling. If the things they sell are not working as intended, it’s their responsibility to replace the product with a working one. If this is not possible, they are required to contact the game company in order to get a working one. I am not quite sure, however, whether these laws are the same where you live. If they are, you should go bother the shopkeepers a bit.

Don’t want to trololololo here, but personally I find it strange that the SD staff finds the time to give infractions to a certain post in this thread, but doesn’t give a reply to help this customer.

Even IF they replied, I think it’s of the best interest to share the solution with the rest of the community to see how -when having the same issue- to solve this
Now we’re all up to speculation

if you buy from tesco stores rotten meat, you will contact china manufacturer for refund, or tesco store directly for refund?

(shagileo) #17

I’d contact however is responsible. Sure enough, it’s the game store, but if you ask for help on the (official) dev forums and no one replies (again, I’m not sure if that’s the fact, it could be he got a pm) - it’s kind of sad, especially if you bought a game and can’t play it because of no help

(BioSnark) #18

You’re responding to a reply.

GAME did not supply you with a complete product. If they refuse to replace it then buy a bar of soap and a pair of socks and go all “full metal jacket” on them until they do supply a complete product.
GAME will then deal with their supplier who will replace/refund them. You should not have to go “up the supply chain” to fix something. Imagine you bought a mobile phone from Carphone Warehouse and the 1 button didn’t work. Do you contact Nokia or Carphone Warehouse for a replacement?
The problem with GAME is that 90% of their employees are kids who don’t like the paperwork involved with refunds / don’t understand the rules properly (because they don’t get trained properly because they’re cheap and replaceable employees).
The rules about refunds are there to stop people copying and returning games / activating games and then returning them making the returned product useless and unsellable. This is not the case with you. Try slapping them more.

As for the “why don’t SD respond to this thread” stuff: This is outside SD’s purview. This has nothing to do with the game but has to do with a distribution glitch with a single boxxed copy. At best all they could say was “talk to GAME” which is already what everyone is saying.

EDIT: It may seem like I don’t like GAME employees. Quite the opposite: I think they’re getting fleeced by GAME. I worked for a very similar outfit many a year ago and know what it was like behind the till. Low pay with little benefits and no motivation to do better other than being easy to replace. That being said I also know how lazy some of those guys are.

Unless it’s been deleted, there are no posts in this thread with infractions. A couple of people who posted here already have infractions, but not for this thread’s contents. I see your point, but it’s off the mark because of this - unless as I say, a post has also been deleted post-infraction.
