Nicknames and clan tags in QW?

(Tejstar) #41

But even if you can have other account names - will you not need another retail copy of the game for additional users?

I’d like to know this to as there’s normally two that play in my household too!

(M8DNanite) #42

Lets repeat the currently known facts:

You can have 3 accounts per CD-key. If you give family members one of the accounts and he/she gets banned, the whole cdkey is banned.

You can not change nickname after you created account, you can only change clantag and colors afterwards.

There are also 2 at my house who play. My brother and I. Also, we don’t have a second computer that can run ETQW so what is the point of buying a second copy if we can’t play together anyway. The only point of buying a second copy is to install it on a second computer so a friend can play at the same house with you at the same time.

Now if we took turns, my brother might not like how I named my character, but he does not mind using my account.

Like I said, one quake wars CD key does not associate to one person. That’s why we should be able to change our “in game” name, that would link to the account name, or maybe be able to create multiple accounts. BF2142 does this, World of warcraft does this. If you can’t change your in game name, or be able to create multiple accounts, then it will be worse than EA or Blizzard who I know are cash leechers.

It would also look stupid if let’s say, a guy who plays by the rules, and due to being unable to change his name, he lets his friend, a teamkiller and cheapskate, play. Now wouldn’t that damage his reputation to just let a friend try the game out?

Don’t be like Blizzard or EA and make us buy a game for EVERY MEMBER of the family who wants to play. I can’t think of any person who has like 2 or more copies of the same game at a household, except huge fans of a software company. I know that someone has like 9 copies of doom 2 sealed in box. It is a waste of money and a waste of harddrive space to install 5 4GB games, if they are 4GB, on a single computer.

But I have doubts that I will be seeing these “problems” anytime soon because I have trust in SD, id, or Activision, because they aren’t cheapskates like EA or Blizzard entertainment (the blizzard now, not the one around 10 years ago).

You see, it doesn’t matter if 1, 2, or 3 accounts are made, if some jerk plays, then everyone in the family cannot play the game.

Let’s say I tick off my brother. Let’s say he is vengeful. Now what is a great way for revenge? Go into his quakewars account, because he would know I would be playing Quake wars a lot when it is released, and act like a jerk and get banned in every server. Now if it is CD key banned, then I will be banned.

I have experienced this before. I warned my bro not to spawnkill in a no spawnkill server in Wolf ET. He did that and got banned. I couldn’t change accounts and join the server myself.

Sometimes if I get angry, and for revenge, I tend to have thoughts of going to my brother’s favorite game, Warcraft 3, and go to their forums and get himself banned.

At least in ranked servers, if you have a ranking, all your medals accumulated would be reset to 0 if you are banned and create another account.

A cd key is associated with a FAMILY, or PUBLIC computer, not A SINGLE PERSON. Especially in parties and stuff where my cousins come in and want to try the game out and accidently do something stupid that would result in a ban that is beyond my control.

hopefully this ban stuff does not go throught the whole game but to that single server. My bro got banned, which made me can’t be able to join my favorite wolf ET server. Forutnately, I can join 2 others that I liked. But if there is only one server in ETQW with my specifications, and get banned from that because an arse did something stupid while I was away doing something else, then I don’t know what i’m going to do.

People adjusting to the game might be more likely to get banned, like in Wolf ET, someone was calling for a medic, and I went for him. I looked at the map and I didn’t know why I went over the needle icon no one was there. Now I then realized that he was one level above me. He tapped out thinking I was just standing around being an idiot. If he was more strict, I could of had my ass banned and therefore my whole family banned from a server that has the settings that I like, or my whole family likes.

Unfortunately, I know of no games who bans by person playing at the time and not by the whole computer. (mutiple people can play on a single computer, and a CD key is almost always is associated to the computer(s) the game is installed in). But fortunately, I have no jerk family members. I can also try to teach my cousin how to play by doing the bots thing. I think bots can really help people get used to stuff, but I know some people who like to go straight to real people to play with. So I’m afraid that the stuff that I want is pretty much useless, unless SD pulls it off and find a way around this mess, i don’t think that banning by person can ever happen.

(yibble) #45

Other than the obvious, “Don’t let your bro’ play on your installation”, or “Protect your password” cliche. Banning by player is wholly possible with identity management solutions, but it’s also wholly expensive for a company to implement.

(Snoofer) #46

oh common guys

if a son borrows his fathers car, does he change the license plate? so if he drives drunk and kills a person his dad wont get any problems?

or if person A is a hunter and lends person B his rifle, person B commits a crime -> person A is in trouble

if your brother is a cheater or teamkiller: never give him access to your QW (or QW DVD)
dont blame the programmers if there is a stupid person in front of your pc

the only question is: is there some kind of password protection available?

ps: “banning by player” is only possible if the player account is combined with the cdkey, otherwise a cheater can create a new account,
and if its combined its banning by cdkey
-> there is no way to ban by player

[edit] or did you mean identity by ID-card? no chance in our globalized world, maybe possible in one country, but never in all

(kamikazee) #47

I’d guess there is, at least if players don’t want to be locked out of their accounts for abuse caused by third-party players.

(fart666) #48

The good thing is that you always can be sure that a guy which is called Locki is me! :stuck_out_tongue: No other player can choose this name to fake.

dear mr. wedgewood…i for myself live in a country where things like freedom dont belong to only a (selected group of) person(s)…best regards and…good night.

(signofzeta) #49

heh heh, that what I was trying to say. I said in the last paragraph in my other post how it is impossible to ban the cheater without banning the whole “cheater’s family”. I guess they will play with bots while I play with real people ha ha ha

I know in Canada, Alberta is “driver’s fault” while in Manitoba, it is “car owner’s fault”. The way alberta enforces it is by looking at who is driving. Unfortunately for ETQW and cheaters, and people pissing off very strict people who created the server, resulting in a ban, there is no way to do it the “Alberta” way, but you must do it the “Manitoba” way, because you can’t see who is sitting on the computer chair playing ETQW.

Well how about in the case in accidental bans? Like some people have different names, but they are off by 1 letter, or it could be a letter replacement etc etc, and they ban the wrong guy? What happens then? I guess it would be to contact the server admins to find out why so and so was banned.

If you are banned, is it you are banned for only that server like in Wolf ET, or are you banned for ALL servers? If you are banned from all servers, due to a mean admin that you happen to piss off because he thinks you suck for dying too much, then wouldn’t it be not fair because you can’t join another server with a more nicer admin?

My opinion here. I think ETQW is on the bubble. Gameplay is great, everything is great, and I will be playing this game soon. Problem is, will there be something in the game, that would ruin something and the so called “badness” overrides the “goodness” of the gameplay and graphics and such that made the game so cool? Like my example with the if you get banned, the only way you can play is get another game?

I think SD are geniuses so that they won’t piss off a large majority of the players who get banned for no reason at all. It happens.

(Tejstar) #50

So I take it that I’ll definitely need two copies of the game for two PC’s in the same houshold?

(kamikazee) #51

If you want to play at the same time, you got to have two copies.

If not, it would just be fair to get two. But that’s your decission. (Unless there is some extra check to see that you can only install the game on one computer. That would be a large administrative nightmare though.)

(Tejstar) #52

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I think I’ll buy one for now to make sure I like it. Then I can always purchase another one at some point down the road.

It’s the least I can do after the amount of fun ET has given me over the last four years…

(signofzeta) #53

I’m sure I’ll buy the second one, only if I get banned accidentaly, or by me sucking at the game so much. Of course I don’t use cheats, but I might go across an admin that bans shitty players, or I might go across a clanwar that the admin didn’t put a password to. I will only buy second one only if the final game makes it so that the ban is when you are banned, none of the servers can be joined. But if it is that one server, then I don’t need to buy another one. I’ll just join another server.

(murka) #54

k ill buy a serv and ban u for good xD

(fart666) #55

sarcasm end?

(signofzeta) #56

see see see? I’m already pissing so many people off. If I were to join on one of their servers, I’ll totally get banned, and not be able to play ETQW forever.

Then it would feel like the game hasn’t been released ever.

This only applies to ban from one server, you get banned from all.

(Senethro) #57

and what other games work like that?

(kamikazee) #58

Steam VAC-protected servers, IIRC.

(bobjones) #59

thats if you get caught hacking.
if you’re just being an idiot and get banned from one server, that doesn’t mean you can’t play cs again. just not in that server.

(signofzeta) #60

Heh, ok then, I don’t have to panic afterall. QW will be a great game. I think if you were banned from all servers via punkbuster because you were hacking, then I think that is the best price to pay.

Now I know you don’t get banned from all servers for stupid reasons like pissing off an admin.

Speaking of hacking, I’m not one to hack because:

  1. I don’t know how to use one
  2. I don’t want to shell out another 60 bucks
  3. Like I said, I die a lot.
  4. My K/D ratio sucks. Like I would get 4 kills for every 40 deaths.
