Next Movement Test Patch

(INF3RN0) #1

What I would like to see in the next test patch regarding movement is an increase in normal strafe speed and removal of strafe acceleration if there is any, and the addition of a recharging sprint bar.

(Senethro) #2

Any particular reason?

(INF3RN0) #3

I find the discrepancy between sprinting and strafing to be too big. Increasing strafe speed would make fire fights require more tracking skill, as well as giving escape attempts and reaction/recovery from surprise attacks a fighting chance at being successful. A sprint bar on recharge would effectively give it value. Why have unlimited sprint when you could just increase the normal movement speed instead?? One thing I didn’t include because I think it belongs in the next step would be to allow sprint shooting in coalition with the rechargeable sprint mechanic. There’s a ton of opportunities that open up with that type of ability that make fire fights all the more interesting, cognitive, and skillful.

(adhesive) #4

they also need to add a strafe jumping movement system and fix the strafing delay/acceleration.

Haven’t had the chance to test the current mechanics since last patch, so I’ll hold off voting for a bit.

Right now I think it takes about 1/3 of a second to go from full strafe right to full strafe left. I’d rather see how the game plays with that inertia reduced a bit with everything else as-is, before changing the strafe speed itself.

Have no problems trying these out too, though.

I agree that the discrepancy is too big, please lower the sprinting speed.

+1 top speed is good, just the delay needs tweaking (or removing).

(Mustang) #9

Would rather not see a sprint bar and would like to see the other changes made before increasing strafe speed, but yet to everything else (including adhe’s additions)

(tokamak) #10

The delay is appropriate because it precisely prevents that jittery dancing. If you removed it then a player could dance as fast as the engine allowed him.

Absolutely agree with Inferno here. We need to take a crack at this an really see what it brings. I believe the positives will out weight the negatives.

I voted no, the overall speed, especially in strafing feels high already, for me making it fairly hard to hit. And (trying to imagine things here) if the strafing were to be increased, de/acceleration would need to be (slighty) slower, to compensate for being harder to hit.

And the stamin recharge bar would further increase travel time.

But apart from the stamina bar, I would not mind having the suggestion put to the test. I have a hard time seing how it would increase my enjoyment from the game, but I might be surprised (or not.)

I voted yes, because I think that the current movement will stop a lot of Splash Damage’s existing audience from playing Dirty Bomb, and I don’t want that to happen. The movement isn’t unique enough, isn’t fast enough and isn’t fluid enough. It’s like running in Battlefield, Call of Duty or any other shooter in the market right now.

Splash Damage are well-known for including great movement in their game, and I know they want to make this game popular and hopefully pull back some dedicated fans who abandoned ship after the Brink fiasco. The movement today is better than the movement was a few weeks ago when this alpha started, that’s for sure, but it has a long way to go.

So, c’mon guys, we know you want this game to thrive as much as we do! Let’s get the movement down, let’s get skill back into moving, then let’s go forth with map balance based on the new movement. I have faith!

The only reason I listed the sprint bar was because an increase in normal strafe speed would balance out the lack of infinite sprint. I think the current strafe speed is quite a bit slower than etqw/et, and just feels too sluggish for me. I constantly feel like I don’t have to try to aim because of this, but I understand it’s not the same for everyone. Appreciate the response.

(Valdez) #15

Id like to vote for being able to sprint/strafe/move backwards/while being able to fire.

(Seanza) #16

Sprinting and shooting is OP.

(Valdez) #17

How would it be OP if everyone was able to use it?

I agree with all this. Faster movement will help this game stand out… It will create more positive conversation about the game.

On a side note, sprinting and shooting is awesome, but probably a little too extreme for this game. If Doom 4 doesn’t have it, I will be very disappointed.
