newer radeon drivers (4.6) & now old nforce mobo driver

(DG) #1

ATI Radeon 4.5 (release notes)
nForce mobo drivers 4.24

Cant see anything exciting / worth bothering with in either of those tbh, unless you have problems. Also note a minor “known issue” with these radeon drivers:

  • A split screen is noticed when loading the game Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory with AA set to 2X or 4X. This issue will be resolved in an upcoming CATALYSTâ„¢ release

(MadJack) #2

That’s great… New catalyst that breaks ET… That’s so ATI… mumblings stupid idiots mumblings

(bacon) #3

That’s only when AA is set to 2x or 4x though.
But hey at least ATi doesn’t reduce texture quality for better performance…

(SwordOfDamocles) #4

rofl…let’sfuck stuff up!

(pgh) #5

Ive had a huge increase in performance since installing those nForce drivers… no longer need to use com_maxfps 43 as im sitting perfectly at 70-85 in most areas and 60+ in Radar Grass and such… big change from my 10/20 before… same old FX5200 too…

Shame tho, need to install XP SP1 now to update me USB as it wont support USB 2.0 without it…

(DG) #6

you dont have SP1?

what nforce drivers you have before?

(bandit5k) #7

Upon installing the latest nForce 2 drivers. I screamed my head off due to what they changed. The nVidia sound mixer is bollocks, the new sound storm is bollocks. Man they cocked up thier drivers
I had to revert to the old ones

(MadJack) #8

Those drivers work wonders here. Odd. I like NVMixer, I think it’s much better than the old app. But that’s just me.

(pgh) #9

Not even had time to look at anything else that came with em cos I installed em 5 minutes before our Unter game and upon teh celebrations after it I just smoked meself to sleep on comms watching teh demos lol…

(CM..Punk) #10

I cannot use ET with my current 4.5 drivers, it just crashes almost instantly after joining a game. The Windows error reporting says it’s a known problem and was caused by “ATI”.

Where can I get the older 4.4 drivers?

Edit: OK I found em at last, damn that link on the ATI site is TINY

(MadJack) #11

You can also find optimized versions of ATI drivers at Omega Corner that’s if you can stand God Loves You all stuff…

(DG) #12

ati catalyst driver 4.6
release notes

Improvements in OpenGL driver efficiency bring numerous small gains (1-3%) in Call of Duty, Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory, Star Trek - Elite Force II, Serious Sam, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Quake III Arena.

A massive one, maybe even three whole percent! I can almost hear the collective gasp of wonder and astonishment.

(MadJack) #13

Hmmm… If there’s 10 small gains of 1-3 % I’ll take those!

Oddly enough, nVidia leads most of the benchmarks on OpenGL compared to ATI. I wonder if ATI is finally starting to understand that and making the appropriate changes…

@DG, damn I looked this morning and it wasn’t there. ahhh well

EDIT: Oh DG, could you change the thread’s name since I don’t think nVidia will change their nForce drivers anytime soon. 6 months is what it took for the last changes.

(DG) #14

I read some completely unreliable rumour, pretending to have been started by an ati software engineer, that ati were re-writing their OpenGL driver from scratch. In the unlikely event this is true* I would assume that driver would be planned for sometime prior to doom3, or any doom3 benchmark.

  • (seems more likely they got crossed wires with this new “driver efficiency”, which they presumably would not be bothering with if they were rewriting the whole thing)

(SCDS_reyalP) #15

Well, at least it is a little more honest than the “up to 40% performance improvement” nvidia has claimed for just about every driver from the original detonator on up :stuck_out_tongue:

(MadJack) #16

True indeed.

(mouse) #17

wow, increase of performance for free, I like it!! gonna try it 2nite
