X1600 is more the class of a 6600GT. You should look for a 7800 or a X850. Esp. the 7800 is a little bit over your limit, but the prices will drop until ET:QW comes out.

Wait until ET:QW is out, then buy a card. Otherwise you’re just wasting your money. Unless you need the card for other games, in which case you asked a wrong question.
Hint: ET:QW is sheduled to 2007.

If it’s primarily for ET:QW then I’d recommend that you wait until the real release date is announced, since both those cards will no doubt come down in price before that. (Maybe not much, since I just noticed that it’s AGP you want.)

I’d go with nVidia given the choice of those cards because of better OpenGL performance.

I recently picked up the BFG 6800GT, as i wanted to play HL2 and FEAR with their nice sparkly effects and assumed that QW was going so slip. It’s a great card and I have no doubt it will run QW well enough.

I don’t like ATI’s many variants, prefering the almost recognisable range from nvidia.

Geforce 7600GS 256MB at Newegg
$149 and a $20 mail in rebate

AGP is old. Your next system will probably be PCI-E so investing in an expensive AGP card is only going to last you until your next computer, and then it will become a paper weight.

I would buy that card, and save the other $100 toward a new computer.
