New PC Hardware for Brink
@tonschuh.

i would recommend this tower:
http://www.corsair.com/cases/graphite-series/graphite-series-600t.html?utm_source=Corsair&utm_medium=Website&utm_content=600TBanner&utm_campaign=FrontPage

its one of the biggest mid towers out there. i personally like the look very much. from the looks i would prefer this thing over all other towers i know. its really beautiful and probably soon i have one of them for myself.

i also would recommend a nvidia graphics card. ati is always cheaper, but when i comes to games, nvidia is top notch. 560ti should be it, or if you want to spend more money, 570. go for reference design with the 560ti. they are pretty silent. one of the best reference designs nvidia has ever done, according to a big german hardware forum.
… unfortunately not really common here (case) … that’s my old one: …

… will tell you the final config of the new Sys, if I have made the final decisions …

… btw. I was living up to 11/2008 in Germany too … (Mannheim) …
… if I try to be in the same price-range I could buy this one: …

… can’t get a GTX480 at my favorite dealer …

… would be the GTX560 Ti much slower then the HD6950 ? … how important are the 1gb compared to the 2gb graphic memory ? …

… I think I will play mainly shooter games on the pc, because I want to buy an xbox too: …

http://www.ebgames.com.au/xbox360-154512-Microsoft-Xbox-360-320GB-Gears-of-War-3-Xbox-360

… I don’t know yet how much time I will spend with the xbox, but it’s more for games I can’t get for the pc and my wife wants to play the kinect games, so I recon that the pc will be still my favorite toy … next planned games are need for speed and maybe bodycount (not sure yet if I should pre-order it, because the reviews are not so good atm.) …

:stroggtapir:
i swapped my 6950 (flashed to 6970) as it hated brink. if you like brink i wouldnt advise ATI. the only issue is a comparible nvidia card is much more expensive. i now have a 580 and it loves brink!

… Thx for the info ! … but there was someone complaining about the last NVIDIA driver update, somewhere in one of the threads, but I don’t really know the details … my last NVIDIA graphic card was something with MX …

… I have changed plenty parts for the new Sys, but it’s still not final, as I don’t know if I should swap one hdd with a SSD and I’m still not sure about the power supply too, because everyone gives me a different advice about the watts … the range is from 550 Watts to 900 Watts, so I’m not sure yet what to do … when I read all the problems with SLI / CrossFire then I’m not sure anymore if I would put a second graphic card into the Sys or if it would be better just to buy a bigger one … maybe I should stay with normal hdd’s and spend some money on a better graphic card or just keep it like it is … ok, maybe only a power supply with ~700 Watts, what was my first choice …

if you didnt want to splash for an SSD (makes windows feel much faster & apps etc) you could always get 2 SATA HDDs and raid them. bascially you can have lots of different types of raid but what they essentially do it let you use 2HDDs to do the job of one. you have a backup drive if one fails (possibility) and read spead is improved as it gets the data from the 2 drives simultaneously, meaning its faster.

… the problem is, that I have no idea, if it would be still a big improvement with an SSD if I put my games still on a SATA-3-Seagate … I’ve never seen a SSD in action … the last time I used RAID was ~1999 as I worked with NT-4-Server …

hmm, not 100% sure but i dont see whay you cant raid 2 HDDs that have partitions. in fact i know you can do it as ive had servers setup with 4 disk RAID arrays before.

almost all motherboards have raid these days. you just plug in 2 drives and setup in the bios

you should see a speed improvement and you have a backup drive if 1 fails (since the 2 drives hold the same data) and are seen as a single drive in windows.

SSD is nice, i managed to get a 64gig one free  windows boot times are much faster now and my PC feels much more responsive now. i guess its like going from a 1Ghz to a 2Ghz CPU?

i know game impact will be minimal unles you are constantly loading textures etc. but some games do work like that. maybe not FPS as all the map should be loaded into RAM but on games like fallout where its constantly loading the map in sections should see a decent improvement.

… ok, thx for the info ! … as I had to “donate” some money to my wife and as I had trouble to get the parts I wanted to have, I ended up with the following sys: …

 • 2600K

 • GTX570-OC - Gigabyte
 • no SSD
 • 2x 1gb - SATA-3 - Seagate’s
 • 750W - Antec True Power
 • THERMALTAKE FRIO OCK - CPU-Cooler
 • Case + Fan’s

… the first amazing thing is this: …

… stable @ ~68 => BurnInTest v6.0 => MaxHeat-Bench: …

nice one mate. its so nice to play with all the eye candy and acceptable frame rates. i actually find gaming harder with stuff like antialiasing on and shadows, but i just love the eye candy

btw - you got the 2600k overclocked? they can push 4.6 - 4.8GHz with the right air cooling!

i think swapping over to i7 sb would only cost me about £200. maybe wait till the next series of i7s come out as i havent found anything i cant handle at max everything yet.

i downloaded quake wars last night and i get that on ultra everything 16x AA and 32xFSAA  even bc2 i can handle max FSAA and AA.

but you know, sometimes you just wanna buy stuff!

If you have a microcenter nearby they are usually the cheapest place for cpus, a 2600k is $279.99 there.

This is Throbblefoot, hiding in the blind while Jimmy pokes at his massive RAM sticks and arcane CPU-seating technology. The subject seems relatively calm, with the merest muttering and calls of “WTF is that thing…?” and “meatball surgery!” With any luck, he’ll be “applying lightning to the monster” in the morning.
