New PC Hardware for Brink
An SSD is too small even at its highest capacity to fill with games and OS. It makes little sense. This is why we tend to suggest that users pick which way they want to go.
there are ssd’s out there that go up to 2 tb of data. they cost a couple of thousand euros though.

but even with a 120gig drive you can put some stuff onto it. i run windows7 x64 ultimate edition, some apps including adobe photoshop and all my games on it.

-cod4
-crysis2
-doom3
-etqw
-hl2
-nexuiz
-quake
-quake2
-brink
-global agenda
-team fortress2
-zdoom

and i still have ~30gb free space.

so, it makes perfect sense to put os, games and apps on them.
And you are right that it will not give a FPS boost to your gameplay but it smooths out gameplay a ton. Especially on games where new levels are constantly loading on the fly. So you’re right it improves load times. However those micro loads happen more often in games than you think. Having SSD makes consistent smooth gameplay more possible with out any hangs, skips or sluggishness.
your second paragraph points out pretty well how much sense it makes to put games on a ssd. so, your kinda contradicting yourself there.

cheers

SSDs don’t give you you more frames in games, at least not if you have enough RAM and the OS doesnt need to swap. Also todays onboard sound cards are good enough if you ask me. Its not those poorly sounding AC97 anymore. Those Intel HDA sound as good as the creative cards when it comes to music reproduction both have good S/N ratios. Only difference is EAX which might give you hardware accelerartion when games use OpenAL which most do I think. Newer games dont support EAX directly anymore. So there is no point in buying a 100 dollar soundcard if you ask me. Creative might claim that the soundcard can “enhance” your musis but that is bull****, its only some digital filters and stuff which distorts your sound.

Dude. Come on. Wise up. Your situation is not the same as everyone else. that is why i said we usually suggest the user pick which way they want to go. I have my Win7 64bit OS on an SSD. No games. I have tried it with games only and its great that way too. But I have way to many games to put on my paltry 128gb SSD. Its a matter of preference. There is no blanket one way of doing it. I was offering a professional opinion and professional suggestions.

I’ll post on my final purchase Tuesday and I better get the Fanboy of the Year award for dropping $1k just to play Brink.

Thanks again,

The SSDs are the ONE technology of the last 15years that made computers FEEL extremely faster. The speed boost of 100:1 comparing to HDDs is just ****ing huge.

My photoshop loads in a second compared to 18secs from my old HDD. Loading screens of games are extremly short and same goes for texture loading during games, that can look ugly on other systems.

For brink Im one of the first players on the server and I bet the others got SSDs too.

SSDs are not a matter of GB/cash. You dont need 2TB for videos etc. You buy them for your OS and programs. That can be 64 or better 128GB.

oh and I forgot… they are completely silent… no Krkrkrkrkkrrrrkkkchchch anymore.

(Smoochy) #26

i fitted a 64gb crucial m4 SSD this weekend. makes windows really fly now. not sure on game performance now though, not sure it makes much difference there.

:slight_smile:

wife doesnt know i blew £350 on new gfx card. still doesnt know i blew £2500 last year on a new amp and speakers :slight_smile:

… would this Sys ok for BRINK, or would it be still to weak ? … :confused:

:stroggtapir:

(zenstar) #29

Best use for your SSD hardrive for performance is to put your windows swap file on it.
Putting windows on it / any games on it will boost load times only, but putting the swap file on it will boost any time the swap file is accessed.
Admittedly it’s less important if you have enough memory and win7 64bit to utilize the memory.

IMO SSD drives are not worth it yet. Overpriced for a small boost in performance. The money is better spent on more RAM or a better CPU.

I think it looks OK, the only thing I would personally opt for is a more powerful PSU, like a 950W but I am not sure exactly what power your sucking up with the graphics card.

(TONSCHUH) #31

… ok, thx for the tip ! … :slight_smile:

… what do you think about this one: …

ANTEC TruePower QUATTRO 1000watt PSU EPS SLI-Ready Model: TPQ-1000 => $ 229

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

… should be able to run CrossFire too, or ? … :confused:

:stroggtapir:

(Cep) #32

That’s more like it :slight_smile: At least now even if the rig is not using all that juice your future proofed for that extra GPU in the future.

(TONSCHUH) #33

… ok, thx ! … now I have only to wait 2-4 weeks for the money … :slight_smile:

Just make sure that that’s not one of the ATI ‘problem cards’. Personally I’d go with Nvidia, but if it’s not one of their problem cards then you should be fine :slight_smile:

Please take this time and search for a proper PC forum with competent people.

Your system looks like a complete FAIL tbh. Mostly packed with either old components or massivly overpriced “gaming” stuff. You are wasting a lot of money and dont get the desired power.

Please, take this advice seriously and look for a proper PC community. They usually have an own forum section for buyer advisery.

(TONSCHUH) #36

… if I try to be in the same price-range I could buy this one: …

GIGABYTE GTX560Ti SUPER OVERCLOCK 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI Clock:950MHz GV-N560SO-1GI-950 => $ 285

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

… or …

GIGABYTE GTX570 OVERCLOCK 1280MB GDDR5 Dual Dual-Link DVI HDMI Clock: 780 MHz GV-N570OC-13I => $ 375

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

… can’t get a GTX480 at my favorite dealer …

… would be the GTX560 Ti much slower then the HD6950 ? … how important are the 1gb compared to the 2gb graphic memory ? …

… I think I will play mainly shooter games on the pc, because I want to buy an xbox too: …

http://www.ebgames.com.au/xbox360-154512-Microsoft-Xbox-360-320GB-Gears-of-War-3-Xbox-360

… I don’t know yet how much time I will spend with the xbox, but it’s more for games I can’t get for the pc and my wife wants to play the kinect games, so I recon that the pc will be still my favorite toy … next planned games are need for speed and maybe bodycount (not sure yet if I should pre-order it, because the reviews are not so good atm.) …

… the thing is, that at the end no one can really tell me if I should still stay with socket 1366, because I could upgrade in a few month time the cpu: …

INTEL CORE i7 990X EXTREME CPU SIX-CORE 3.46 GHz 12MB CACHE LGA1366 => $ 1159 atm

… or if I should go with the socket 1155 and the following CPU: …

INTEL CORE i7 2600K 3.40Ghz 8MB CACHE 95W LGA1155 => $325

… and change the motherboard towards this one: …

ASUS MAXIMUS 4 EXTREME VER3.0 Intel P67 Express Dual Channel DDR3 2200Mhz (OC) SLi/CrossFire => $448

… Sabertooth would be an option too, to save some money … I need a proper new base and want only upgrade the cpu, graphic, ram later on … I’m not the kind of gamer who buy every now and then a whole new sys … as my old owned sys is very old (A7N8X-Deluxe + 3200+ + HD4670 etc.) and the sys I rent atm (Q8200 + HD4350) is crap, I have to invest a little bit more for a good base … the next whole rebuild will be in 2+ years or so …

… as I have here at home plenty of heat in the summertime and I don’t have the money for a water cooling sys atm , I will need good reliable parts …

… but I’m always open for some other examples of a whole new sys … maybe someone of you guy’s want to share some own experiences with me …

Edit:

… I have changed the motherboard, graphic and added a cpu cooler …

Id love to help you with my knowledge but its limited. What I can tell you is, that there are a couple of good forums out there with very nice people that can nail your perfect system. I got my system with the help of a german forum: http://extreme.pcgameshardware.de/komplette-rechner-zusammenstellung-und-praxisprobleme/95
Tell them what you want and they are happy to help you. And they really know what they are doing there.

About the living time, I also dont buy systemparts frequently and bought my last rig in 2007-8. I also like to buy systems for longer time :slight_smile:

I bought my system in february and lost sight of the new developments since, so no guaratee for anything:
Intel 2500k <- nice to overclock and pricy.
2 8GB Kits of Team Group Elite RAM <- girlfriend needs a lot of RAM for photoshop etc. It was the cheapest RAM at that time. Better RAM is just a waste of money and improves performance close to none.
EVGA 560-Ti FPB <- Very quiet card with very low power consumption. Still runs brink like a charm in fullHD
ASUS P8P67 <- Everything you need and more. A lot of nice OC ability and the UEFI
2 Samsung F3 1TB in RAID1 <- fast but loud, was not the best decision in retrospective
and the best thing since bread came sliced digitally:
a Crucial c300 128GB SSD <- This is what really makes working on a PC a revelation. There are even better ones now
As a cooler I got a Scythe Mugen 2 rev.B. Cheap, quiet and massive cooling
Case is a Fractal Design Define R3
A that all is powered by a be quiet! Straight Power E8 CM 480W, yep 480 are sufficient…

Hope this helps you a little. But again, get your info somewhere else, for your own good!

@tonschuh.

i would recommend this tower:
http://www.corsair.com/cases/graphite-series/graphite-series-600t.html?utm_source=Corsair&utm_medium=Website&utm_content=600TBanner&utm_campaign=FrontPage

its one of the biggest mid towers out there. i personally like the look very much. from the looks i would prefer this thing over all other towers i know. its really beautiful and probably soon i have one of them for myself. :slight_smile:

i also would recommend a nvidia graphics card. ati is always cheaper, but when i comes to games, nvidia is top notch. 560ti should be it, or if you want to spend more money, 570. go for reference design with the 560ti. they are pretty silent. one of the best reference designs nvidia has ever done, according to a big german hardware forum.
