New PC Hardware for Brink

(Jimmy James) #61

OK, so an update:

I went into the store last week with my price estimate print-out and purchased the components except for the motherboard, which they were sold out of due to their 4th of July sale. So, I had a bunch of shiny boxes sitting in the middle of my living room for a week. (They make good end tables btw.)

Anyway, the store finally got the motherboard in stock and I spent all yesterday drinking and assembling the computer (in that order). The learning curve was pretty steep as it’s been about 5 years since I built my last computer from scratch. Let this be a lesson to people who consider buying one of these pre-built rigs (like Dell) just because they are inexpensive. If you don’t keep up on the tech you’ll get left behind.

A few observations:

Regarding manuals: My case came with an extensive manual, 42 pages covering 7 languages and my power supply came with a similar manual. WTF (#1)!? I never got manuals for these items before beyond a single page that basically said: “If you read this sentence and kill yourself with this product we aren’t liable.”

Regarding the CPU: I picked up the quad core i7 3.4 GHz monster and the box is pretty big (4.5"x3"x3") and relatively heavy. It’s also got this really shiny metallic-looking sticker that I can view through a little plastic window. So, I’m feeling all good about myself and I open the box and it turns out the little metallic-looking sticker is the CPU and the entire box is taken up with a massive fan/heat-sink combo. AHH! WTF (#2)!?

Regarding stickers: Right now the outside of my computer has so many stickers it looks like a bong. Seriously, one for the CPU, TWO for the motherboard (one informing me that it’s “rev 3.0” whatever that means.), and even one for my power supply (the power supply also came with a cloth bag complete with drawstring in case I want to bring it on vacation).

And this is where my first criticism ever of nVidia comes in: WHERE IS MY ****ING STICKER NVIDIA!?!? I spent 30 minutes paging through the manual, checking the cd driver sleeve, and rooting through the box. No sticker. WTF (#3)!?

I eventually got the whole thing put together but it was pretty late by then so I decided to call it a night. My next step is to install the OS and do a 24-hour burn-in so I may be off the forums for awhile but I’ll post back here with hardware details and performance comparisons in Brink vs. my old rig.

UPDATE!

I got my new rig up and working, had some problems connecting to the internet through my router so the 24-hour burn in period turned into a 72-hour one but then Throbblefoot told me what I did wrong and after a quick trip to the computer store I was online. (Oh, I’m supposed to inform everyone that her kung-fu is superior to mine btw.)

So, as promised, here is a comparison:

Old Computer:

Case: Dell XPS 410
Power Supply: ?
Motherboard: ?
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
RAM: 2G
HD: 250G
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 8600 GT
Sound Card: Sound Blaster X-Fi
Mouse: Crap Dell Mouse

Brink FPS: 15-25 (20 ave.)

New Computer:

Case: Antec Three Hundred Gaming MidTower
Power Supply: Corsair Enthusiast Series 850W
Motherboard: Asus P8P67 B3 Rev i7 i5 i3 LGA1155 P67 DDR3 USB3
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600 3.4Ghz 8MB Cache 32NM LGA1155
RAM: Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
HD: Seagate Barracuda SATA3 1.5 TB
Video Card: nVidia GeForce GTX 460 SE
Sound Card: On-Board Realtek High Definition Audio
Mouse: Logitech G9x Laser

Brink FPS: 75

Interesting note: While on my old computer the FPS varied pretty widely based on the map and number of human players, my new computer never varies from 75 FPS. Sometimes I see the FPS drop or jump for a fraction of a second but I can’t even see the number before it goes back to 75 FPS.

Also, in addition to the hardware mentioned above both Throbblefoot and I have brand new mouse pads, so consider this fair warning that we are about to stomp you all!

EDIT: Added video card info. (d’oh!)

That might be because of the Vsync…

seta r_swapInterval 0
and you should see what fps your rig is really capable of

Thank you very much for this information. I went into Options>Video>Advanced and turned off the Vertical Sync and my fps jumped from 75 to around 210! (In the character selection menu.) I’ll provide some in-game stats once I’m uh, in-game.

Thanks again,
JJ

Just played a bunch of maps with 8v8 all humans and the FPS stayed around 100 the entire time.

Thanks again for this tip,
JJ
