New/old forum poll

(Amerika) #44

I’m just stating why it is the way it is these days. Most companies only want to design a product that will be flexible and scalable easily across multiple devices and resolutions and not have to create customization’s for each.

Also, you would be extremely surprised by how many people use forums like this with their phones and tablets. It’s a bit more likely that people will use a PC since DB is a PC based game, but people still leave their PC but want to use the forum. I’ve seen stats for quite a few forums and it’s fairly surprisingly how many use mobile.

(NexDroid) #45

Well it was a shock at first. I am still quite lost in new forums yet I like the way it changes. It looks more mature and more modern. I think that it will need some time to get used to it yet for now, I can say I like it a lot.

(Xenithos) #46

HE’S BACK EVERYONE! Let’s give hugs all around!

(LifeupOmega) #47

Same issue as Blizz’s forums. Everything is too big.

(Xenithos) #48

Took me a bit, but scroll out if on Desktop, really helps things. Still not perfect or vastly better, but definitely helps.

(nokiII) #49

Yeah, even on mobile it’s way too big…

Being able to see just 4 posts which all only contain one or two lines is completely unacceptable lol.

New forums

  • Better functionality
  • No more disagree abuse

Old forums

  • Visually better looking
  • Agree / Like / Insightful reactions
  • People rivalling points

If there was a equal option, I would have voted that. Right now I like old forums more. Perhaps in time I will adjust to new one. Just like @LifeupOmega said. Everything is too big (font, avatars and padding). I think DB should have own standalone forum that isn’t linked with other SD games. Dirty Bombs and other games playerbase will radiate each other, transforming playerbase integrity to something else. Perhaps to better course.

(DarkangelUK) #51

I genuinely don’t understand why the forums need to be separate when all of the sections are still there, unless its purely a visual aspect. I think the heart does a good job of showing agree/like/insightful reactions, but yes I agree the font is a little large, was nice seeing more posts on the screen at a time.

We had Dirty Bomb nexon forums, reddit and warchest forums. In my opinion manifestation of each of these message boards are different.

Warchest (original forums?) was little bit untalkative. Discussions are strictly Dirty Bomb related and there was no room easy / open communication. Posts are usually shown as constructive and adultlike commentators. Casual and especially young players had difficulties to join discussion, because it does not feel easygoing. Same for people that didnt speak English as native language, because people generally are suspicious / low self-esteem about incorrect grammar. It’s more comfy just to blend to international playerbase and constant flood of posts with all grades.

Dirty Bomb (nexon?) forums was place for everyone, except for devs. For example, Exedore got negative agree/disagree ratio, it must have affect negatively how devs could express their opinions across the board. You cant speak loosely, because there was constant fear of disagree flood. Therefore people got marked, if they did something exeptionally wrong or right. Which had good and bad influence. People had to conform general opinion, that got more clear with negative/positive/balanced feedback. In my opinion, insightful reaction had specially good effect. We could argue that insightful is better than agree and agree is better than like. This gives more clearance, how positive reaction is.

Then there is Reddit. As free/open as old forums without too much rules. But most comments are short and I dont really like upvote/downvote system. I like to read stuff in their categories and without ads. Then there are bots that goes over my comprehension.

Best solution would be united discussion board. I can see you are doing exactly that. It feels that nexon forums are deleted and everyone is forced to use old but overhauled forums. I bet this will conflict playerbase as international/young board will settle and stomp old/distinguished warchest users. In worst case of scenario, nexon posters move to reddit. Altering general utterance. Perhaps pointing discussion somewhere, where it should not be in my opinion. Perhaps old warchest users dont have so strong voice anymore. I feel also that these new forums give too much value for first respond. By this, I dont mean Ptilouis comment in this thread is over valued or bad, or anything negative. All the threads/first replies are individual.

But hey, I dont really have idea what i’m trying to prove here. In first place I came forums because I had problem with the xigncode. After creating thread, I found someone else had same problem in reddit bug megathread. But I already made my move, registering to nexon forums. I didnt follow these discussion boards before that. Now there is no ‘technical support’ section, where people can focus on non-bug related technical problems. Important value for me; enviroment where people who seek help, get aid. Best way as possible.

Pretty much most of the things you said there are what makes merging them in this format a good thing, it does away with most of your negative aspects and gives a common ground for everyone. Really the best thing to happen was moving away from both and merging them under a different, more accepting roof which removed the negatives of both.

Meh, I feel like some people complain on everything that is different nowadays. How can you guys say that old forum, from like y.2004 did look better? It was totally outdated in everything… literally everything.
Anyway, from my side, there are just two things I cant get used to after these few days:

  1. New/old posts - as on all other forums, I would like to see categories change icon color when there are new posts. Many people never use lists like “Latest” or “Top” or “New”, and are used to go through categories into subforums… after all, Its a forum, not a facebook timeline.
Also, I cant imagine that after f.e. three weeks of inactivity I have to scroll through “Latest” 120 topics…
Exchanging of subforums icon color is just something that a forum must have, imo.
  2. As people said - that big text. When I zoom out 1x, I feel like thats how it’s good. The big text might be good for blogs or something, but on forums with many posts it should be smaller.

Other than that, I really like all new functions, especially realtime preview. It is also much faster, at least for me… love it!

I think this is the third forum software upgrade I’ve been through at SD so far, and I like the new one - it’s a nice (and probably needed) transition to the future. The only thing I miss so far, is an option to change theme - this one is a bit too dark for my own personal preferences, but I hope that will come in the future (or let me know if it’s already there, but I can’t find any setting to change it).

I also think it’s great to get the dirty bomb forums integrated with the other SD forums - reminds a bit of the previous Quakewars migration eheh

Oh and hi to all new and old forum users - it’s been a while! :strogg_banana:

And a second suggestion - would be great to the get all the old forum emojis back, as old posts looks a bit odd without them. :flame_thrower:

Welcome back stranger.

(Teflon Love) #57

I think most people referring to the “old forums” mean the old Dirty Bomb forum, not the old Splash Damage forums. The DB forum were less dated and on a PC used screen space a lot better than this current mobilesque incarnation.

I’m not a fan of this new UI/board whatsoever. It’s too similar to many other forums and it has too much of a social media feel. I don’t understand why just about every 'site nowadays seems to push for some kind of Twitter-esque look or whatever you’d even call this. Gets a definite ‘no’ from me.

(Xenithos) #59

I get the feeling, the whole social media similarities. I would have to say that it’s currently working for me though. I rarely use other social media, but this works pretty well! Tons of little improvements all over the place. I love the better search parameters, the discussion scroll bar, the scrolling down and it simply loading more. It’s definitely an upgrade in power and functionality. There are also a ton of little differences that make it great, such as dragging and dropping in pictures. It effectively encourages proper language, scrolling, and still offers forum level tools for dicussion (bold, numbering, etc [Not available on twitter quite the same way]), while representing it in a very mobile friendly way.

It’s only major downsides is that it doesn’t feel like a “board” anymore (hard to describe) but rather a tree of spastic information? And currently a lot of the text and replies etc are just so big… (themes an size controls are missing).

Gotta go with the new forums this time but only because of the features

Once I realized I can go to the main forum page click new, THEN SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM TO SEE THE NEW TOPICS, then I enjoyed it more. I like being able to easily nav to new topics and replies without having to go into the subforums themselves. I also quite like the message preview when typing a message, so you can see in real time what it will look like. Topic tracking/untracking is great too

I don’t like the suggested topics at the bottom, necroing old threads. I know the admins and mods hated the rep system, but it was fun and I’m sad to see it go. The leaderboards page and being able to post on a user’s “wall” was fun too.

Not a fan of all the wasted space under our names and icons next to each post. It would be nice to use it to display user messages/custom titles or statistics (like total posts/time read/join date etc.) and make it feel less empty.

I love orange but orange on dark grey is… not. The design also feels super corporate and super not Dirty Bomb. It was nice having a color scheme that matched the game, and having images and backgrounds from the game too. But now it’s just kinda… sufficient to allow people to read, and I guess use it on mobile? I dunno, I’ll never visit the forums on mobile; typing on a touchscreen is

  1. Bad
  2. Bad
  3. Bad

And also

  • Bad
  • Slow

I’m also just not a fan of the “dark theme UI” trend on media sites. It makes them all look the same, bland, dull theme. It’s nice when you can recognize a site by it’s layout and design. But with EVERYONE using or having a dark theme, the only way you know which website you’re on is from looking at the icons and the web address in the address bar.

But all in all, the new features and functionality is well worth the rest of the stuff I’m not a fan of.

All in all, a good job was done

(hawkeyeguy99) #61

I think there should be a better way to direct DB people specifically to this sub-forum because some of them are getting mixed up in the standard SD general chat.

(Nail) #62

reading comprehension is an admirable trait, hand holding is not

(binderr) #63

This forum is very different from most I’ve been on. New and old post look the same to me and its far too cluttered. Furthermore and I was making a new post, and there was no preview option that was in the old forum. Wil take some some to get used to.
