New/old forum poll

RIP the Best DirtyBomb meme thread farming :stuck_out_tongue:

#23

Unfortunately, some sacrifices just have to be made!

I enjoy signatures quite a bit as it’s another way to express who you are in many ways. As long as signatures have a character limit that is reasonable and do not allow giant images, they have been fine in my experience. A lot of people like to post some info on who they are, link to stat sites, or just have something funny they change from time to time…or never ever change. Signatures can say a lot about a person which is important when interacting with people on a forum IMO.

However, I will NEVER miss the reaction system. If you dislike a post or disagree, you should quote them and write why that is. Hitting a button is so passive and does very little to help the conversation along. And it turns into a giant headache for mods when it’s abused (both intentionally or due to a misunderstanding).

Holy shit you’re actually alive

Sometimes you don’t really have anything to add to a post. “I agree” or “I disagree” or “I like it” is response enough. Now instead of racking up 5 - 10 agrees or likes or dislikes or what have you, you’ll just have a thread that starts as a giant block of text, and then either a bunch of “Yeah me too” or “Nah seems bad” in response. Or it’ll have a bunch of likes and no responses. Or it’ll have thoughtful responses which would’ve come around with the old rep system anyway.

All in all it was just fun. You’d be hard pressed to prove that the rep system actively discouraged people from responding due to the ease of “clicking a button.”

I’m OK with Likes. I just do not understand how dislikes/disagree helps anything without giving context of what you dislike or disagree on. I’d much rather read a well thought out post from 3 or 4 constructive people who disagree/dislike something than I would see 20 dislikes that may or may not be all dislike of the same thing.

For example, I outlined 5 different points in a post I just wrote that I would like to see addressed by the devs. I end up with 20 disagrees. But which of the 5 points is a person disagreeing with? All of them? One of them? Did a person get on their Discord server and link a post and go “LUL” without discussing it and 5 other people clicked the link just so they could disagree with it via a button without even reading? All of those things happen and happen frequently. Very rarely is it constructive.

Then there is how awful it is to deal with when people go abuse those buttons or misunderstand or choose to define how those buttons are supposed to work in reference to forum rules.

And yeah, I’m still around. I’ve lurked for a long time and will continue to do so

I dislike expanded UIs tbh. It’s the reason I still use the old Youtube layout. Just not sure why everything has to be so large that we can only see one or two pieces of content on your screen at once.
I also kinda wish sections were better separated. The old forums had such nice clear sections that pulled your eye across them naturally, these ones are just… eh. All bleak and grey.

But aside from just general UI preferences, I really hope unread message icons are brought back. That’s probably the most important thing I have.

Also just an added point, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone post something just for the agrees or whatever. I liked seeing the Lols, likes and agrees on my memes because it told me what people thought of my memes, not because I wanted points that don’t do anything lol. I get if they’re not possible to implement here, but they certainly weren’t ruining the other forums lol

(BananaSlug) #28

Would be nice to see who created thread on the thread list.

(Press E) #29

And who last posted too

(Amerika) #32

Blame mobile devices/design. Tons of people use mobile these days to view sites. It’s why everything is giant, spaced out (for fat fingers) and why minimalist design with simplistic layouts and colors are so common now.

#33

We’re aiming for a minimalist design, but I will feed this back to the design guys!

(NinjaToast) #34

I don’t like this style of forum. Always felt it was messier and less usable than the old style.

(Press E) #35

Doesn’t really mean the desktop design has to be super inflated too though. I mean, I doubt most of us are using touch screen computers for this, especially since this is a gaming forum lol

(BananaSlug) #36

But overall you can’t say it isnt well programmed, works perfectly, just some tiny design flaws

(Xenithos) #37

I like that I can use any format I want (bbcode, markup, html, etc) however this new forum feels so… over-classy?

Hard to explain, I see both good and bad here. The words and style that this follows seems to be cluttered in a spaced out way. Maybe it’s the background and words, but it FEELS claustrophobic. Gonna take some getting used to. I welcome it though, really do.

(Muddy Muddy Mud Nade) #38

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET VALIDATION OF MY JOKES WITHOUT LOLs?
On a serious note, I think the new forums are a bit more streamlined, but it does suck that I never got a signature :/.
EDIT: More thoughts.
I think the forums have been edited for a more “discussion” based system, leaving out the more “shitpost-y” elements. The easier quoting system, the “add edit reason” button, the increased formatting options, the common/recent posts area, and the post preview option is done to make long posts a lot easier to create. I wish they left in the reaction buttons like LOL and Agree, but this new system seems to be done to make these reactions be shown through posts.

(enigmaplatypus) #39

Looking through the threads a lot of my issues/ thoughts have been brought up… so ill try to keep this short well shortish. Personally, I miss a few features from the old forums. I think it might be nice in the future to have icons on each main category on the forum home page. The old forums had icons after each main group of forum locations (i’m sorry i don’t know what to call them). The icons could be helpful and help distinguish each group (so you have a lesser chance of clicking on the wrong one). I feel like the color scheme really fits splash damage but doesn’t really fit DB that well. Also, it can be difficult to pick out the lettering because the colors of text and background blend together very easily (especially when trying to scroll). I also miss being able to edit forum posts and forum titles way after the fact. although that is a feature from long ago (i think when nexon was still involved) i still miss it and it would be great to have it return. That’s my list of issues here are some positives. I like that a thread is all one page, it makes it less tedious than having to flip through pages. although that could become an issue on massive threads (just way to many comments). The new forums do feel more intuitive and easy to use though. I like the organization on the home page of “new”, “top”, etc. Although i think the “unread” option could be tweaked a bit… maybe to show only your unread and not have the main topics displayed and your unread further down. I do like how easy it is to see what conversations are pinned. i love that the dirty bomb title and the title of the sub-forum now have a drop down menu attached for easier navigation. Well a short post kind of went out the window didn’t it XD I think the new forums have a lot of potential and a lot of positives… but a few issues that could be tweaked a bit.

(Nail) #40

don’t like new forums at all

(Sorotia) #41

Definitely prefer the old forums…

(auwi) #42

I wish everything was more compact, IE text size is smaller, avatars and names are smaller. This is even an issue for me on mobile. The scroll bar is def something really cool

And I know everything is compressed in the center for 4:3 support and mobile, but come on, text wrapping exists to support for them. I want to use the whole screen.

(Nazgul) #43

Yeah it’s not the most stacked interface but it’s allright
