New info

(Cankor) #121
I’m not entirely sure these are all new info but I guess I could write them out here, because that was probably the point of this thread, from the third gamearena article

-58 abilities
-caltrop grenade, operative-only, 30 second long caltrop mat that damages enemies who don’t go through it slowly.
-disguised operatives can’t get buffed by enemies
-when operative hacks a turret they can get into a first-person mode to shoot with it
-medics can make people able to soak up a lot of damage (or even invincible) for couple seconds by giving them adrenaline, after it wears off all the damage you received will hit you instantly
You missed: 16 maps total, including the four what if maps:

RH - It really does. Brink will have sixteen missions, spread across the two campaigns, but out of those sixteen, four are what we like to call the “what if?” missions. They’re not actually part of the official storyline.

:(
16 missions, not maps. There are 8 initial maps (or districts as they call them) and 2 other bonus maps.

(Humate) #123

Clever use of the word mission. It plays into the hero mentality of SP players, and gives the story more power framing it that way, than saying you play 8 maps twice.

:magicpony:

(Cankor) #124

yeah, that’s what I meant. But it’s still more than 8 maps:

It sounds like the bonus ones are only seen in one side’s campaign. My take on the reason you don’t see them from the other side is because when you win all your maps you actually force the other side into something they wouldn’t do if their side was winning. And this works both ways, so when you do well as Security you end up pushing the resistance into a corner and they try and destroy founders tower. When you are playing as the resistance, to get to the end of the campaign you have to be winning the previous maps, so you never get pushed that far so you never see that mission, instead you push the Security into doing something you never saw while you were playing their side. It’s pretty clever (assuming this speculation is correct, but probably something clever nonetheless even if I’m off base here).

That said, you have to be able to play them from both sides, so if you have a bonus Security mission, even though it’s not in the Resistance campaign, you have to be able to play it as resistance in order to drop into an 8v8 match in that campaign.

So, if there are 4 bonus missions playable (that’s what I heard somewhere) this means there should be 10 maps total; 6 common maps existing in each campaign and 2 each only in one campaign. This matches the count of 10 that was listed in one of the previews.

edit: or if there are only two bonus maps that would be 7+2 = 9 total, but Ham said 4 what-if maps in that interview so I’m going with 6+4=10.

The 4 bonus missions are 2 maps.
The 16 campaign missions are 8 maps.
“In addition to the sixteen core levels, there are four missions called “What If,” two for each side, that portray a little twist on the various storylines. Rather than telling the story from a faction perspective, the “What If” missions are “not really canon,” and let players see their factions be a little more extreme with their actions. That leaves open the possibility for more story-based missions in DLC, and while Ham said that putting in a new class would be a little much for DLC, “new abilities, new maps, new storytelling; those would be the things we’d love to see when and if DLC comes along.””

interesting
this is where the 8 + 2 originated, the Joystik interview

(Cankor) #127

:)
hmmmm OK, I will buy that, if there is a mission and it only appears in one campaign, you can still play it from both sides. But unless I am just tired that’s still 9 maps:

7 maps common in each campaign. The 8th one in each campaign isn’t common, so there are two of those. 7+2 = 9.

It’s still 16 campaign missions, they are just on 9 maps (assuming those 4 missions are actually two maps and not 4

I think I should win a cookie or a dancing banana or something.

No, there was another where the guy said there were 10 missions (period). It was one of the first two or 3 in the original listing from badman. I know this says 16 plus 4, but to me this just validated the first one and why i thought maybe there were 10 maps.

edit, found it, it was in co-optimus:

When you start a mission, you are given the choice of how you want to play it, limiting which sides the players can join. From what I could see, there were 10 missions available on each side and each one is a series of mini-objectives with an over arching goal.

Could it be this is the total available in playnow mode? If it IS 10 missions for each side, then using the above (I hope I am not too tired) logic it would be 8 common, 2 not shared per side (4 total) = 12.

12! I am an optimist  So I am going with either 9,10, or 12, anything more than 8.

(Humate) #128

lol you dont have to buy it mate

Each map is made up of an attack mission and a defend mission.
Therefore 8 campaign maps are 16 missions.
And 2 bonus maps are 4 missions.

My logic is irrefutable! Stop with your refutting, I’m not listening I’m not listening.

(Humate) #130

haha soz :frowning:

(Nail) #131

there are 8 maps, each one has 2 levels, the maps will play totally differently for each faction, each faction will have it’s own objectives and side missions, there are also 2 “what if” maps , also with 2 levels, one for each faction. Because this isn’t DM, the levels play entirely different depending on which faction you are playing. So for single player, there are 20 levels to play, for multiplayer looks like 10 maps

(Cankor) #132

That’s 2 better than 8 right? This makes me twice as right as Humate (it’s important because I am keeping score as I doubt I can beat him in-game).

(3Suns) #133

From Rahdo’s mouth as quoted by the GameArena:

GA - So perspective really comes into play, redefining each side’s experience?
Richard Ham - It really does. Brink will have sixteen missions, spread across the two campaigns, but out of those sixteen, four are what we like to call the “what if?” missions. They’re not actually part of the official storyline.

There are six missions per side (62=12 total ) which are cannon, and then (22=4 total ) missions per side which are “What if…”. (12+4=16)

Be warned - there are major spoilers in that interview.

(Humate) #134

lol oh dear, my bad u win cankor!..

(Nail) #135

“and while Ham said”

same guy different info, and I’ll bet a dollar I’m right, it’s 8 + 2

(LyndonL) #136

My money’s on Nail, only cause I want more maps :frowning:

(EcafNoGav) #137

8 maps is enough if they are varied in theme and game design but when they do release DLC I hope they don’t go the BS route Halo 3 and WAW did where they force you to buy them or practically lock you out of most of the game. And I hope DLC won’t be just maps but weapons and customizations as well.

(crazyfoolish) #138

say… It sure would be nice if a dev could just come in and clear this up for us.

I’m just sayin…

(Mustang) #139

Could it not be 8 maps only
And the bonus 4 are played on one of the already existing maps
Or comprise mostly of already existing maps with a little bit extra
At least that’s how I interpreted what digibob said

(Maca) #140

Not that it really matters but this map discussion could be held here: http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23464
