why does a server force you to download every map in its etmain, rather, every frickin file in etmain, is this a big enuf problem to fix because when i wanna go play a map on a server and i hafta download like 5072390178 other files, mainly campaign files, and a few maps, it angers me cuz of the slow thru server download rates

Pure servers store all game assets in pk3 files. These are basically zip files which make it easy to store bunches of files without having messy folders and individual files lying around. It also makes it easier for servers to verify that clients have the same resources since you just have to check a few CRCs and not a billion.
Because a pk3 file can hold anything (new sounds, graphics, models, maps) and because the server loads them all when it starts, all clients need to have the same files. You may not be using the big fat map and sound replacements in mycustom.pk3, but you could be using the small campaign script. According to the server, everything is in use.
Yes, this does cause all sorts of headaches for players who want to play on a particular server only to be forced to download all sorts of stuff. All I can say is that you should take this up with individual server admins and see what they can do about it. They can always turn off auto downloads and force people to get them from a different source, use the http redirect and distribute the load, or simply decide not to host six different betas of one custom map that isn’t even in the standard map rotation.

If u are an Admin and u have a “Pure” server enabled you will force all of your users to download every pk3 on your server…
We don’t use “Pure” and have web redirecting which allows our users to download maps at 150k…
