need tips for 56k modem use

I used to have broadband, but now am stuck with dialup 56k and have found the game to be completely unplayable. I’ve switched the connection speed back to modem and use only the lowest pinging servers with anti-lag on. I get pings of around 120 in all-seeing-eye but when in game it’s around 700+ and the game is one long slideshow.

What else can I do to make the game run smoother on dialup?

this

and no, its still not what i’d call “smooth” :frowning:

if you cant use any sort of decent gaming connection, er, google for some modem tweakage and in ET:
rate 3500
snaps 20
cl_maxpackets 30

It’s no good, no amount of tweaking is going to make this game playable on 56k. I can play wolf on 56k pretty well, but this game is a flickbook. On some servers I get 1 update per second.

I can’t get broadband because I don’t know how long I’m going to be living at this address for (I’m job hunting) and I don’t want to either fork out for huge installation costs or be stuck in a contract until I know I’m going to be around for a while.

Oh well, back to playing SP games for me then :frowning:

My lovely connection was when I was at my university flat and could afford it because we sharewd it between 4 of us :frowning:

Hopefully when I get a job (hopefully making games) then I’ll be able to afford cable again. Until then, it’s back to turn based fps’s

I have 56k and have no problem joining games with 36 or less players. I currently have the cheapest internet service here in Miami at $9.00 per month. When playing I make sure no other programs are running except my virus protection and firewall. I also make sure no spy materials are on my computer which can slow down connection. When connecting I try to get the fastest speeds available otherwise I hang up and retry to get 46 plus. Then I connect to RTCW or ET.
Get spybot and check if you have spy material on your computer aand use windoctor (or norton utilities ),if you have it, to make sure the computer doesn’t have alot of errors.
Ohh if you have AOL (thats another story)
I use to use bellsouth here then I went cheaper with a company caled supratelecom.
When I say no problem I don’t mean all the time there are sometimes I encounter problems but most of the time I don’t.
Good Luck

There’s no problem with my connection, I can play most online games reasonably well (such as wolf or DoD) but I simply cannot play ET. No matter what settings, what connection speed or what server, I get flickbook games :frowning:

There are moments of almost playable speed, but they rarely last for more than 10 seconds. I think there’s simply too much traffic going through the pipe in ET to be worth playing 56k. (that would explain why the SMGs have a reduced fire rate over wolf)

Im very curious as to why you went from a cable to a 56k?
