I need help installing for Ubuntu 12.04. I’m really new to linux and can’t get the game installed, I installed all of the reconnmended software for the keygen but can’t get passed:

“Initial test release. ver 2.30c
This release is not compatible with the win32 builds
Please enter the installation path [/usr/local/games/enemy-territory] No write permission to /usr/local/games”

Could someone help me?

Thanks

No write permission to /usr/local/games"

Install it in a location where you have write permission, or login as root and install it anywhere.

If you get a write permission error you should CHMOD the directory

Type: chmod +w /usr/local/games

But it seems that you install with your ROOT account which is bad.
Add a username and work with that.

I used this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnemyTerritory

but downloaded ET from here:

I also used method 4a for fixing my sound, but think i downloaded updated packages, as the old ones are not there anymore AFAIR.

Lastly you need an etkey if you don’t have one already (verify this by opening console and type ‘cl_guid’, then enter, if there is something like ABABD1…, then you already have an etkey). If you do not have one you can manually download it here:
http://etkey.org/
and place the file into etmain directory.

If you want to play games, stick to Windows.

If you want to learn and understand computers and operatingsystems, stick to GNU/Linux (and avoid Windows…it makes you computer stupid.)

lol…i know a lot of dumb, primitive windows / linux sentences and this is now one of them.

Thanks for all the replies, I didn’t think I was going to get this many so quick!

I got it running, but can’t get the sound working. I tried all of the suggestions to get the sound working but because I put the game files in another directory I can’t seem to link the fixes to them. So I’ll give up and just stick with Tf2 and CS:S until I get a lot better with Linux.

Thanks a lot everyone!

PS:
Runeforce, I’m actually a recovering windows user, so I want to fully move over to Ubuntu so I don’t have to deal with windows anymore.

lol thanks

And yes, that was simplified. The point was that Windows is so illogical structured and its representation (under the hood) makes so little sense, that it makes it very hard for its users to make sense of it. Of course using Windows does not make you stupid, the enviroment just makes it harder for you to learn. Plus you have a pay-wall as barrier to entry, and now also the walled garden.

@chrischameleon
I use Windows myself for my gaming needs.

There is a hack to get the sound working in W:ET on modern linux systems, however, I would like you to try ET:L (www.etlegacy.com) first, which is an updated W:ET release compatible with all mods except etpro. Some people have problems running ET:L on Debian/Ubuntu, but it will take you only 5 minutes to try, so you have nothing to lose.

(Dragonji) #12

Yeah, you should definitely try ET: Legacy. You probably won’t play on ETPro and/or servers with PB enabled so ET:L might be an option. If there are any problems running it, you can ask for help on #etlegacy @ freenode.net.

(chrischameleon) #13

Cool, thanks I’ll try ET:L that might work as I only like playing with fritzbots. Also you think TC:E might work with that, and maybe their pb servers too as they’re the only servers with people on them?

(Dragonji) #14

TC:E 0.49b works with ET:L, however there is no way to join a server with PB enabled.

(Mateos) #15

Because they removed the PB support, since EvenBalance dropped the support for Q3/RtCW/ET/ETQW for the explanation

(Dragonji) #16

W:ET source code was already free of PunkBuster related stuff.

(Harle) #17

I never thought someone could fail with my How To, as it is a simple copy paste manual.

(ailmanki) #18

This should be less trouble to install then in windows. But since your new to Ubuntu, the beginning is hard compared to windows, but the benefits are enormous.

Anyway get playdeb, this should work, though since you already have installed stuff manually this might fail - fingers crossed.

(nonoMapper) #19

It can allready fail if you have a total newbie that doesnt know you have to start the terminal, or do you think everyone knows windows/linux have a commandline

(Mateos) #20

read -p “Do you know how to use Bash?” :stuck_out_tongue:

If I recall correctly…
